Can't image a GAA club doing what the Swifts are at here...

Dungannon Swifts in plan to wind up Derry City FC
The Dungannon Swifts Board has decided to commence winding-up proceedings against cash-strapped Derry City.
Derry owe the Swifts £30,000 from the selling on clause of Niall McGinn to Celtic and a missed payment deadline has prompted Dungannon to take action.
City's Board held talks with community representatives, business leaders and politicians on Monday night to discuss the extent of the financial problems.
Derry players and backroom staff are owed several weeks' wages by the club.
Swifts took legal action and agreed an out of court settlement with the Brandywell club in October over the money owed from a sell-on clause resulting from McGinn's transfer to Celtic.
The parties reached an agreement but the exact amount Dungannon was to receive was not revealed.
McGinn moved from Dungannon to Derry in January 2008 and then signed for Celtic in December 2008.
In a statement Derry City said the club was "aware of its obligations and is working towards meeting them".
Swifts chairman Jarlath Faloon said that Dungannon had "absolutely no second thoughts" at pursuing liquidation.
"The board of Dungannon Swifts is absolutely infuriated with the treatment we have received from the Derry City board," he said.

Thankfully, it'll never happen in GAA once they retain their status.

These soccer clubs are business's as well as football clubs. Dungannon are due this money and Derry it would appear to have broken several promises to pay it to them. It may be a move from Dungannon to force their hand.

Sad it has come to this but it looks like Derry will do well to come out of this.

It seems severe and very vindictive to me... if Derry fold sure Dungannon will never get the money.

They would prob get very little, thats why I see it as a way to force their hands and get something now, rather than nothing later.

It's not just Dungannon ... Derry owe Linfield £5,000 for tickets from the Setanta Cup which they're starting to whinge about.  £30,000 is a hell of a lot of money for a wee club like the Swifts. I don't know much about Derry, but this seems the third or fourth time in the last 20 years they've been in trouble ... the money men running the club need to take a look at themselves, why should Dungannon suffer for their mistakes?

longrunsthefox

I suppose... as a member of a GAA club I can't image ever trying to get another club folded. But is whole different ethos.

What is it with Irish football clubs spending way beyond their means and putting themselves into this position.  Cork City were lucky not to go out of business earlier in the year and it has happaned to many other clubs as well.  Some of the clubs that are suffering where only League Champions a few years ago, do they overspend to be successful on the field even if it means putting the whole future of a club at risk.

Considering the level of support the majority of soccer clubs in Ireland attract, it's completely unsustainable ... it's not as if they're getting big money for TV rights etc

Derry supporters seem to understand Dungannon's position

What you have to remember is that the money Derry owe Dungannon could be the difference between Dungannon suriving or not down the line. Derry got the money for McGinn, they should have passed Dungannon on their share but it seems they didn't due to financial mismanagement. Derry's board, not Dungannon's, are at fault here.

The people I feel sorry for here are the loyal Derry supporters, including some friends of mine, who support their club up and down the country through thick and thin and could be on the verge of losing one fo the most important things in their lives.
As I dream about movies they won't make of me when I'm dead

I wouldn't be too sure that Derry have been paid by Celtic yet. Most of these transfer's are paid in installments and depend a lot of factors. Portsmouth still owe Arsenal money from Diarra's sale even though they sold him on for 4 times the money!

Derry were paid within 9 days are so this was disclosed in court. Dungannon are completely within their rights to take the legal route after receiving no response from Derry for months. Derry signed several players after receiving the mc ginn money leaving Dungaanon up the creek, its a crazy way to run a business and the directors shouldn't be allowed near a football club ever again..
