Any one see the programme about christy on tg4 last night don't know if it was shown before, very interesting jesus he has some haul of medals 8 Ai's and 18 intercounty medals. Good stories about the 1953 when a couple of the galway lads and christy came to blows in a hotel after cork won the ireland, if that happened today you would hear plenty about it. Didn't realise he died aged only 58 he must have he must have been held in great esteem as  over 60 thousand peoplle attended his funeral

Hardstation
The Glen were just completing an 8 in a row when Christy won his first.
They only started losing after he joined.
They would have been better off without him!

Ah sure 14 titles in 26 years isn't great at all :P Just wondering why then is there a statue of him in cloyne if he played for Glen Rovers TK?

Hardstation you are greatly exaggerating Cloyne's demise.

Christy Ring grew up in Cloyne and played underage for them.
He had a falling out with the club, who were junior, and for a few months himself and his brothers didn't play for anyone.

As he was working in the city he joined the Glen. As his parents house was next to Cloyne's field he'd often be there having a puck around with the locals.

Cloyne have contested a couple of the most recent county finals in Cork and are as strong now as I can ever remember them.

Anyone see last night's prgramme - repeat of last years.

Jesus but he must have been a mighty man - and a very quiet, almost shy man at that too. Not like some of the lads going now (I'm not going to say Cork lads in case I'm accused of bias ).

The stories about the 1953 AI when they bate Galway and Christy was supposed to have clipped someone was great stuff - supposedly 5/6 of the Galway lads came to the Gresham that evening and Ring got a clip back and they boxed for about 5 minutes - then the same 5/6 Galway lads came back for more on the Monday to Barry's hotel.

The footage was brilliant.

A legend of a man. 8 All Irelands and 18 Railway cup medals - some haul.

Does he have many relations down there was a question I wanted to ask ?

AZOffaly

That's an urban legend. Apparently there was a bit of argy bargy, but no clips thrown and Ringy didn't get pushed.

Was yer man that was telling that story not with him when that was supposed to have happened ?

Silky

The Taoiseach's graveside oration was very moving.

longrunsthefox

Some spake by the woman at his wake, "It's a sin to bury a man like that."

I don't know, I didn't see the program, but the Galway man in question, Mick Burke, never spoke about what happened in the incident, and took it to his grave. I heard Jim Carney on about it during the summer there. Apparently some of the Galway team mates went to the hotel Cork were in and were 'looking for Ring'. There was a pile of Cork lads there and a bit of pushing and shoving as Ring appeared on the staircase. That was the end of it.

Aye they said on the programme that allegedly Ring hit him during the match but neither man EVER spoke about it publicly, both taking it to the grave alright.

Byt the man on the programme last night did say that 5/6 Galway players went to the Gresham that night, that Ring did get clipped and there was boxing match for about 5 minutes.
