SPONSORSHIP & GRANTS

As an aside issue to the debate on Cork hurlers can anyone answer this question for me:  I am genuinely lost here so I am asking the questions, not making a statement.

1.     I understand that the money for the "Players Grant Scheme" comes from the Irish Sports Council and a sum is given to the GAA for distribution to intercounty players based on their appearances with pro-rata payments up to an All-Ireland.  Is this correct?

2.     I understand that the Grants are paid on the same basis as they are made to all amateur sports, that is to say, they are paid to amateurs.

3.     If a player gets paid money, no, hold up, wait a sec, if a whole team gets 160,000 in sponsorship, or if one individual gets 40,000 does this not make them /him "professional sportsmen" in the real sense and illegible to receive sports grants for amateurs ?  If a pensioner is over 10,000 a year his medical card is swiped off him/her and yet if a professional sportsman is on an income additional to his wages he is claiming amateur status and claiming a grant.  Strange country indeed, or is it just me?

Just you !  ;)

Never happened ! And anyway that's not important anymore. Happy families again.

But can a player claim the grant if he is professional?  If you accept direct payments you are a professional surely?

I can't imagine many people in Cork GAA having the neck to point out this anomoly - look at what happened the last fella with five AI's who tried to coach Donal Og on the puckout strategy he wanted..

Wexford Creamery have pulled out on Wexford Hurlers after what, 18 yrs? .  Is it possible that we could have a county by county listing of who is sponsoring what county this year? It will be hard got money for every county lads.  Counties like my own who have dual teams in a small population with low industrial activity will find it hard.

Can anyone name notable companies who have pulled out of sponsorship?

Wexford Creameries?

Bushmills would be a notable company who finished with Antrim last year after many years of sponsorship, though I dont think they had a choice in the matter.

Unlike previous years, sponsorship will be very hard to come by in these times of recession!

Monaghan lost FKM after 4 years. Prob due to financial cutbacks.

It was actually them who set up next sponsor - Investec Bank this year. Very lucky to get such a sponsor, CEO in Ireland is a Monaghan man. Local industry in Monaghan would be on its knees and not a chance of a dig on on that scale.

from what i believe creagh concrete have put far more money into antrim than bushmills ever did.

i don't believe any of the players can be classed as professional, im sure none of them rely on sponsorship as their only source of income, and dont work. maybe some are out of work through no choice of their own

Surely these so-called grants will go in the budget anyway.

Ballymore Properties have stopped sponsoring Mulryan's own Native County but I think he is still sponsoring Wickla....so M O'D will hardly be leaving for another year anyway. ::)
