Counties in violation of GAA winter ban to be hit in pocket

By Colm Keys

Tuesday November 25 2008

The GAA are ready to crack down on counties who insist on including 2008 inter-county panellists in trial games held in November and December.

A moratorium on all on-field inter-county activity was imposed at a special Congress last January that precluded inter-county challenges and group training sessions as part of measures to tackle player burnout.

But some counties, particularly those who have been out of championships since July and also those who have new managers at the helm, have been busy organising trials in recent weeks.

In some cases, regular inter-county squads have been divided up for internal practice games.

But this practice has now been outlawed and clarity was delivered at last Saturday's Central Council meeting.

Any county found in breach of this regulation will automatically lose 50pc of its league gate revenue, it has emerged.

Outgoing inter-county squad members have however been cleared to participate in organised gym sessions in November and December.

The moratorium has not gone down well among inter-county managers with Clare hurling boss Mike McNamara being the latest critic.

Meanwhile, the GAA will launch its strategic plan for 2009 to 2015 in Croke Park later today.

Does tht include trials that have already taken place? If so there are a few Counties in trouble I would imagine!

How many counties players does it take to constitute collective training?  Thats not the opening line of a bad joke just im wondering what the situatuion is with clubs still in the all ireland club series who have a number of county players.  Are they then in breach of this rule?  It seems to me to have been a poorly thought out rule tbh

Reports in the paper that Cork hurlers (not the ones that are "unavailable" but the "development" squad!) are training.

What a joke

Downs fitness in the Mc Kenna Cup is testimony to the fact that they were training before xmas.

While Tyrone just delayed their McKenna cup start by a week - meaning everyone has to play midweek matches
Down for Sam 2017 (Have already written of 2016!)

Is that why there is midweek matches? As far as I remember there were McKenna cup games mid week last year aswell.

Down hurlers and footballers have been training away flat out since mid November and it was a down player who told me this.

The footballers will prob win the McKenna cup again as they are so much fitter and furter ahead of other teams in their preparations, but like last year, when the other teams get some work done and get fitness levels up, Down will be overtaken by alot of teams. Last year I thought Down looked a very tired team later in the year against Wexford and didnt look great against Armagh either earlier in the summer. They need to get out of Div 3 if they are going to catch up with the teams ahead of them.

There was.

I thought there was always meant to be mid-week games and it had nothing to do with Tyrone.

There always were. Queen's play Antrim tomorrow night, a match which Tyrone's holiday would have had no impact on.

You are taking that as proof?  What would it prove if they lost to Tyrone?
Besides, why do you need proof since you started the rumour in the first place?. You alleged a player told you.  So you made it up then?
