Depends what you're after, but I'd advise pre-booking in Vegas. If you go midweek to Vegas, you'd probably get great deals. I've stayed in New York, New York, MGM, Excalibur, Balleys, Ceaser's Palace, Treasure Island, Paris and Circus Circus.

All of them are grand, but the newer ones like Paris, Bellagio, Venetian are a bit more expensive, but lovely. Remember there is nothing stopping you going from hotel to hotel no matter where you stay, so I'd recommend somewhere on the strip like MGM or Paris and use that as a base.

You should be able to get a few deals at http://www.visitlasvegas.com

Cheap and Cheerful, Imperial Palace, £30 per night for a double room!
Done the job if you just putting your head down.
And its right in the middle of the strip

How many nights would need to see the las vegas - just the sights and main attractions, dont care about the gambling.

Also in while in LA what are the chances of getting work illegal.
I seen a few trips that you can do running out of LA that take you to san fran, san diego, route 66, grand canyon, Vegas, and some other famous places that i cant remember for just over £700 (14 nights) and that includes accomdation. Dont know if it would be cheaper to do that tour and save myself hassel in booking hostels etc or if it would be best to backpack to them places by ourselves and try do it bit cheaper.

If there is a few of ye's just rent a car and hammer around. You'll get Motel's for dirt cheap.
Youth hostels in america are a disaster compared to Oz & NZ. so with a car you'll have far more options with places to stay and where to go etc.
Vegas would be 3-4 days for a quick spin round and get the feel. not including the grand Canyon etc.

stayed in the courtyard by marriott (714-5451001) in la last month and i couldnt say enough about it, if you stay there request an inside room because theres a great pool just outside your window. if your flying into john wayne airport your 10 minutes from it (its actually in orange county) lax is about 30 minutes. booked it online (tripadvisor site) about a week in advance and i think it was about $90 per night
