Re the BBC sports personality crack - the first i saw of this for this year was a week or so ago at the end of match of the day - the first sports start they featured was none other than Padriag Harrington. They had a few people talking about their memories of the day etc. All others featured were definitely British. Surely they weren't considering Harrington as a nomination at the time, or even now ??

I saw that myself and couldn't understand why he would be included

The question posed to Hazel Irvine was what was her most memorable sporting moment of 2007 and thats why Harrington winning the open it is included, but yes a little strange when the add was for sports personality of the year. I suppose the fact it was the British Open means they will try and claim it. Like it or not the Brits when it comes to sport will always lump the Irish in with the British nations. I've often heard John Inverdale and Tim Lovejoy say that our success is just as important to  them. I understand where they are coming from, although not agreeing with it, as Irish sports stars have always excelled in Britain, especially in football  and we're not included in their definition of a 'foreign player'.

Was glad to see England lose the World Cup, was glad to see England slip up against Russia in the Euro 08 Qualifers. However Hamilton seems a decent fella, who does really seem to want the media limelight. Sorry to see him miss out. He's young, so he'll get it yet and probably not too far off.

personally, i think his mechanics and back room team lost him that World Championship in the last 2 races.
Firstly in china, when they left him out running on baldy, failing tyres, and when he came in to the pits had no grip to keep him on the track!
And then yesterday, when he came in for his second pit stop, they only put enough fuel in the car for him to run for another 15 laps, instead of fueling him to the end. i reckon if he didn't have to come in for the 3rd and final stop, he could have made it to 5th spot, and taken the title!!

Delighted for Raikkonen and for Ferrari.  It would have been a travesity for a McLaren driver to win the World title in light of the teams undeniable cheating.  Imo, Kimi has been the best driver in Formula 1 for the last 4 or 5 years but didn't have the car to prove it.  He'll go from strength to strength now and will be a formidable force again next year.  Hamilton is obviously very talented but he hasn't yet put in the graft that you'd like to see in a world champion.

Mc Claren are appealing the result of the race.

After what they've been up to this year they'll have a snowballs chance in hell of winning the appeal.

full back

Even if it is proven about the temperature in the fuel it is highly unlikely the individual drivers will be punished anyway.
Something like this happened a few years ago and it was the teams that were punished rather than the drivers, so Hamilton will have to wait to next year to win the title

The Real Laoislad

Would he really want to win a World Title that way anyway?

If he was happy enough to win it having had the advantage of a 780 page technical dossier on the Ferrari cars why would he not be happy to win it this way as well?

Alonso questions McLaren appeal

Alonso and Hamilton have had a strained relationship this year
Fernando Alonso would be "embarrassed" if his McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton won the world title on appeal.
Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen took the title after winning in Brazil on Sunday but McLaren's expected challenge over the result may yet hand Hamilton the crown.

Race stewards investigated alleged fuel irregularities by Williams and BMW Sauber, but decided not to punish them.

"If he wins the title because of this it wouldn't be fair. I'd be embarrassed for this sport," said Alonso.

"I'm not sure what Lewis would think - I guess if they give you the title, you don't think it's a present but rather that you deserve it. He would be delighted."

And Alonso gave his backing to Raikkonen as a worthy winner, saying: "Raikkonen is the deserved champion.

In the last few races my hands and feet were tied

Fernando Alonso

"If you have more points, you are the deserved champion, just like in football. Kimi has won six races and Hamilton, like me, has won four."

Hamilton came seventh in Brazil and so finished one point behind Raikkonen in the drivers' standings.

But had race stewards later disqualified Williams and BMW Sauber, Hamilton would have finished fourth, earning him enough points to become world champion.

McLaren notified motorsport's world governing body, the FIA, late on Sunday of their intention to appeal against the stewards' verdict.

After a torrid first season with McLaren, Alonso made it clear that he felt the team had failed to give him sufficient backing.

"McLaren got it wrong, they lost the championship for the mistaken decisions they made in the second part of the season," the Spaniard told radio station Cadena Ser.

"It isn't a secret that they haven't helped me much. It wasn't a very well-organised season from the point of view of the management.

"There was no sensation of being a team and the result speaks for itself.

"Each person will have to draw their own lessons from this season but if we had taken a different approach we would have obtained different results."

He added: "In the last few races my hands and feet were tied. I had no power to make decisions. I had to race as they told me.

"McLaren lost and Ferrari did a better job than anyone else."

And asked about whether he could see a future with the British-based team, Alonso said: "The only reality is that I'm under contract to McLaren.

"I know there are a lot of rumours but I haven't spoken with another team, that's the reality."

Jean Todt was over Alonso like a rash yesterday after the race - slapping his back, whispering in his ear, getting him to pose with the Ferrari lads in photographs etc..  It looks very likely that a switch is on the cards alright.

gerry

Alonso has left McLaren, with Red Bull or Renault favourites to sign him.

you could see that coming, bet he wished he never left Renault
