'dont know the in and outs of it but conrad black had to give up his canadian citizenship to accept his uk honour...'

Apparently Black put out feelers to the Canadian government to see if, he ditched the honour, would it be amenable to restoring his citizenship, thus opening up the possibility of him being allowed to serve his sentence in a Canadian as opposed to US prison ... I believe the Canucks told him where to go...

I knew there had to be a Canadian with sense somewhere.

Can't see any problem at all with Nuala O'Loan, an Englishwoman, who was best known for her work in a government appointed post, accepting an award from that government. No inconsistencies there. Hubby mightn't have been overly happy but.

Not too many turn down these honors. Just goes to show that ego often rules over an individual's principles.

I heard a story once, where a school principal (an All-Ireland winning Gaelic footballer) was nominated for the MBE for services to education. He turned down the kind offer and within weeks his school's budget was frozen and the school was being investigated for financial irregularities. An uncanny coincidence.

Didn't Martin O'Neill accept one when he was Celtic Manager?

He did indeed. It was discussed in great depth at the time on a thread here entitled "FORMER GAA PLAYER HONOURED BY HER MAJESTY", started by former poster SBE Mac. No big deal, accepting an honour on behalf of Celtic for reaching the UEFA Cup Final.

In certain countries (I think Canada is one) you have to give up your citizenship if you accept an honour from a foreign head of state. The same should apply in Ireland. The Tyrone GAA bloke should be kicked out of his local club and the association.

I can't see the logic in having to renounce your citizenship just because a foreign state wants to honour you. If I perform some unusual or selfless act while living in the US, and the US president or congress wants to honour me publicly, should I then be excommunicated by the Irish government? What about the likes of Nobel prizes (the Norwegian parliament appoints the peace prize committee), or does this just apply to British awards?

It was Sean Canavan from Ardboe. Former Ardboe manager and Tyrone selector. Here's a link to the story in the Tyrone Times:
