At various points through history the church has had some pretty ropey policies which have since, by and large been changed. Was the holy spirit at play during these periods?

Economics was at play. They were short of cash and fancied building a big chapel in Rome, so they invented purgatory and started accepting payments from people who wanted to keep out of the place. It was the medieval equivalent of the Nigerian internet scam. To this day people are still falling for the purgatory idea even though it was a blatant fabrication that has long outlived its original purpose.

Mine too, but I've never liked that prissy "John Mills' smirk" instead of "John Mills's", and the strained-looking Jones' house, etc. They even expect you to say Chris' drunken stagger, ffs. More and more people are coming round to the Hardy Manual of Style, though.

It would be interesting if there was ever a referendum on the matter amongst practicing Catholics. By practicing I mean people who go to mass on a Sunday and base there lives on Catholic teachings but don't have to be as stringent as iceman is. A 5/8th Catholic.

Would you be in favour of gay marriage ceremonies taking place in Catholic Churches?

I'm pretty sure it would be a very large no!

And that would be fine.

Leaving the legality of something like gay marriage to popular vote is a totally different matter however.
