Can't believe your attitude to the magnanimous gesture st.pauls, would you ever take a 10% pay cut in these circumstances?  I know I wouldn't.

no, i wouldn't because i am already underpaid for what i do, and could not afford to. where as someone in his situation is grossly overpaid for what he does and could easily afford to live on €288,000.

What would you expect him to do then StPauls??? what would make it a good deed in your eyes? I take it you have a problem with every footballer then and the amount they make...

that's right, and not only Dunphy, as everyone on here seems to think!

edit: though my actual gripe was not about what he earns, but the fact that someone was trying to make a hero out of some one who takes a 10% pay cut but will still earn a wage of close to €300,000 for doing very little.

Good enough gesture I think.

Could I afford to give up 10% of my salary, yes (single, no kids). Would I, would I f**k. Also I don't even have a coke habit to feed.

stiffler

Fair play by Dunphy....he wouldnt be one for looking to play the good guy role so i take this gesture at face value.

He didn't have to do it, and it might save one job. So fair play. There's a bit of the Niall Quinns about it, but the really positive thing is now journalists are going to be tormenting Pat Kenny, Gerry Ryan, Joe Duffy etc into doing the same thing.

I'm sure Dunphy would love the comparison to Quinn :D This will probably get Dunphy some attention alright but I don't think that's the motive, 32k is a lot of money to get attention, there's a lot of other things he could do if attention was his sole motive. We're way too cynical

Regarding the players I think Stephen Carr is the player who complained about having to go to a children's hospital, never heard the Eastern European one, that's shocking. Carr is well known for being a tit.

i don't think that we are too cynical, i think it due to alot of us being worried in the current climate we live in, and whether we will make it through, and his gesture to 'show his solidarity' with the common man is a bit patronising. as i stated before, i would have the same reaction, no matter who it was!!
Balls you would. The problem here is it is Dunphy and not the gesture itself. If he was asked to take a cut and refused he would be getting it on here too. Nothing is enough for some people.

how would you know if i would or not, you know f**k all about me!! wind your neck in! some of us work damn hard for a living, getting paid a lot less than 10% of what he is taking home, even after his so call pay cut. i wouldn't care if he refused, but some one coming on here glorifying a man who takes a cut from a wage that is already totally unjustifiable (sp), now that annoys me!!

How are the high wages tv stars and athletes "unjustifiable"? If you want to live in a capitalist society, you have to accept that people are going to be paid according to what the demand for their talents is. If fans were not willing to fork out the cash for tickets, jerseys and satellite subscriptions, Cristiano Ronaldo and Steven Gerrard and other elite sportsmen would not be earning the astronomical wages they are. Similarly, if viewers stopped watching Dunphy or whoever and RTE's advertising revenue dried up for that time slot, Dunphy wouldn't be long getting thrown out on his ear.

Fair play to Dunphy I say.

Well, we're agreed on that anyway! There was a Republic of Ireland player a few years ago (can't remember which) who was annoyed that Brain Kerr made them visit childrens hospitals. God love him

Who is the one that Tom Humphries writes about sometimes who tore up a wad of money in front of impoverished children in an eastern European country?

Albania wasn't it? And he was setting fire to it in front of them, as I recall.
I thought I heard Latvia or Lithuania, the journo never named the player, but from reading the piece at the time I suspected McAteer.

I heard a different name, another lad who was very young and stupid at the time like Jason, and I'm sure very much regret their idiocy. Incidentally both Jason and the name I heard have done a lot of charity work in recent years

brokencrossbar1

Lads be careful with names, there are some fairly nasty suggestions of what people allegedly have done being posted here.

As for the Dunphy thing, it is a gesture and one that has to be respected.  I don't see that her is courting major personal publicity to show himself as the good guy, it is not his style.  I would see it as a push in others people's backs to try to make them have a bit more humility and accept that they are even more grossly over paid, particulalarly when it is coming from the State through RTE.  I don't think anyone is lauding him as a super hero stpauls, (feck you must have gotten too many wallops on the head over the years :P) but they are saying that it is a small gesture that may push further change.  And I agree with you in that 32k to him is a drop in the ocean and to many it is a full years wages, and that really it will have no difference to his quality of life, and that he like many other media people is overpaid, but it is still significant as by coming out and stating he was doing it this may force the hands of other people to be seen to make similar moves.  He will gain much respect among many people for this move.

I wouldn't drop names unless you were 100% certain.  I heard the same story only it was an English International that was named...
