GAA Discussion / Re: Gym Monkeys
November 27, 2006, 06:36:02 PM
Springboks have ban in place on any leg work in a gym for years. No-one could say that Os Du Randt has small legs! French forwards employ ex-Foreign Legionnaires deemed expert in bodyweight exercises (press-ups, pull ups, etc.) as conditioning coaches. Body weight exercises build muscle (lean mass) without bulk. French forwards don't appear overly muscle bound as a result. Healy has a a point, for once, - Ever noticed the development of gymnasts.

Also, lack of need for Gyms per se, should keep County Board bean-counters happy!!!!

Mayo
No club

Best: Versus Dublin this year.
Worst: 1974, My first match as a crawler in Croke Park. Tony Hanahoe beat Mayo on his own.
89, vs Cork in '93, 96 x2, 97, 2004, AIF 2006. And the continued disregard for common decency when dealing with our Bainisteoirs.

Mayo lads, a slight deviation from the thread, but do you remember Willy "The Shoe" on MW Radio. The reception on the car stereo used always go around Mullingar. Many a Sunday on the way back to Dublin I'd pull over on the hard shoulder to listen before I lost reception. May he rest in peace.

What is the rugby answer?

Dermot Earley (Ex-Roscommon & Connacht, brother of Paul/father of "Kildare" Earley) captained the Israeli national rugby team while serving with the UN in the Lebanon. One must assume that the local brass though it might endear the UN forces to the Israelis. If memory serves me correctly, it was for a friendly rather than a full-capped representative fixture. Israel (not exactly giants of the oval ball) have an awful rugby set-up inherited from the old British Palestine Days. Alot of South African Jews have played with the side and at club level. Joel Stransky ( drop kick that one the RWC in 1995 for Sth Africa) played some underage in Israel when the ban was in place against South Africa.

I first heard this when drink was taken ..... but whatshisface from the back page of the IrishTimes mentioned it in one of his earlier columns

The ex-senior county footballer didn't captain Ireland in Rugby. He captained another country at senior international level (7's or XV) - Therein lies the trivia, that an Irish, born and bred, intercounty footballer captained another country in rugby (a game he never played at representative level in Ireland)

Ex-Intercounty Senior player, that captained a senior international rugby union/Country side (not sure if it's 7's or XV) - The player is Irish, played football in the 80's, is male, and as far as I know never played representative rugby at eny level in Ireland (club/province/country)
Zinzan Brooke and all previous answers wrong.

Ex intercounty footballer that captained an international rugby team (not Ireland) - I can't remember if it was a full XV or 7's
