Just a couple of things I'd like to add, while this was a great result for Dublin by finally getting the Tyrone bogey off their back in the championship, I cant see them go on to win the all-ireland. They are too reliant on one forward for scores (and being a Derry man I know a wee bit about that). Dublin have improved immensely under the new management I think, but I also think they'll need another year or two to gel properly as a team to seriously push for sam.

This will be a very unpopular comment with the Tirronies....but I think Sean Cavanagh is the most overratted footballer in the country. I think he always pops up with a score or two at the end of a match when Tyrone have already won which makes it look like he scores a lot. He is rarely if ever the player to dig Tyrone out of a tight game like today...in the past it has been players like Dooher, McGinley, Canavan, both McMahons etc who could dig deep against tough opposition but to me Cavanagh only shines against poor oppostion or when a match is already won. For such a big player he wins very little primary posession and seems to fall at the drop of a hat. He was awful today and if any other player had hit as many wides he'd have been off. Yet Penrose, who I thought was the most dangerous forward tyrone had, was taken off!

Only my opinion!

I had Tryone as favs for AI this year, but I cant see Dublin win it...my money would be on Down after today!

I totally agree .... serious problems with the tyrone forward line when a mediocre player like penrose is there best forward!!

19 July 2010

Today is the closing date for applicants for the Donegal football manager's position, which was recently vacated by John Joe Doherty.

Doherty called time on his two-year tenure following Donegal's disastrous All-Ireland football qualifier first round exit at the hands of Armagh, but so far only Jim McGuinness - who led the county under 21s to an All-Ireland final appearance in May - has officially declared an interest.

Former Louth boss Paddy Carr, who is of Donegal parentage, is understood to have been approached by a number of senior figures. Meath-based Carr managed Kilmacud Crokes to an All-Ireland club title success last year and was also involved with London champions Tir Chonaill Gaels last year.

Declan Bonner and Charlie Mulgrew, who contested John Joe Doherty's appointment two years ago, aren't believed to be interested in allowing their names to go forward this time.

Donegal duo opt out

Donegal's Leo McLoone
18 June 2010

Leo McLoone and Fergal McNulty have quit the Donegal football squad ahead of tomorrow week's All-Ireland qualifier against Armagh.

Naomh Conaill attacker McLoone, who was one of the stars of Donegal's run to this year's All-Ireland under 21 final, informed manager John Joe Doherty last week of his decision to leave the panel.

Urney clubman McNulty has also withdrawn his services in frustration at a lack of opportunities since he was drafted into the panel at the start of the year.

Cassidy holds no fear of Armagh

Donegal captain Kevin Cassidy is relishing his side's All-Ireland football qualifier against Armagh at Crossmaglen on Saturday week.

The Tir Chonaill men have a poor record against the Orchard County, having suffered five successive championship losses to them between 2002 and 2006, and were hammered by 16 points in this year's winner-takes-all NFL Division 2 promotion clash between the sides. However, Donegal did win the last championship meeting between the sides in 2007.

"I've always wanted to play for Donegal in Crossmaglen," Cassidy said.

"I don't think I've ever played there, maybe I did in a McKenna Cup match once or something, but never in a big game like this. The game would have been equally as tough even if it had been in Ballybofey, so I don't think that matters.

"From a personal point of view, going over the Crossmaglen is something I'm really looking forward to."
