GAA Discussion / Re: RIP Michaela McAreavey
January 17, 2011, 11:02:13 PM
I think in the 7 full days  that have passed since the tragic news broke about Michaela we have witnessed everything that is good about the GAA and the community that has it at its core. We are all rightfully proud to be part of such an organisation and to the Tyrone Co. Board and the members of Errighal Ciaran we say how proud we are of all that you have done in this past week to ease the pain for the families and for the mourners. It was amazing to watch the organisation that went into the whole occasion and how everyone rallied to the cause with such dignity.

We also know that if, god forbid, a similar tragedy occurred in any of the clubs we belong to that we could rely on the same effort from fellow members because that is the sort of thing we do and do well when such things happen, no one says no. The tribute from Peter Robinson moved me as I felt it was genuine and sincere because I too have choked up on occasion this week when talking about Michaela whilst thinking of my own daughters, because we naturally think what if.

The new season will certainly feel different and as a Down man I will cry with joy if we lift Sam on the third Sunday and I will cry with pure emotion if Tyrone lift it because we all know something special is missing from the big day.

Remiss of me! I did assume it was the Irish version. After all I thought there was a blanket ban on Dundalk residents entering the mainland until Jim Corr had been successfully sectioned.

Down / Re: Down Club Hurling & Football

Come off it MDG how is that a cheap shot at Lavery. I believe he is one of the most outstanding forwards in the county at club level and would love to have him at our club but I feel he has been consistently under power at county level due mainly to his natural physique. I dont think he has the body that is going to respond to endless nights in the gym, and at county level it makes a difference. Put it like this if you wer to ask me who would I like to see with the ball in hand 30 metres from goal one on one with his defender at croke park i'd say Lavery all day because he has the pace to take any defender. Alas when you get to Croker that is not a position a forward often finds himself in. I did say I liked his clubmate Devlin you can see he is a class act and has the build that will fill out to an extent that will carry him in County games.
If it comes to a choice (which i'm not saying it will be or should be) between the two i'd take Devlin it is nothing personal against Lavery or Kilcoo ( i have many relations there) but if wee James takes both I hope i'm proved wrong.

Thought young Devlin had a decent game has the ability for sure and will be a good addition when he develops physically. Some positives for Down but none in defense. What was the idea with McPolin at corner back? That wont work, as for Lavery I think its time to go back to the drawing board and plan without him. Re Billy Joe if he get rid of the mullet he should lose at least half a stone.

Brian Carthy article replaced Mickeys slot in todays Irish News. A superb tribute to Michaela and her family. A wonderful example of  sensitive and respectful journalism. Pure class. Well done Irish News.

I'm sure the Tyrone Co. Board will have the preparations for Michaelas funeral well in hand along with both families but not everyone who would like to attend will be able to, given that we wer discussing tonite that maybe every club at least in Ulster could maybe send a representative wearing their club jersey as a visual mark of the solidarity the greater GAA family has with both families.

Watched that on UTV with my 80yr old father. We both cried and cried no shame I have never done that in front of him before. Christ that was the hardest thing I have ever watched. I just wanted to put my arms around those poor lads and Mickey and squeeze them. God give them strengh.

I've never met Mickey Harte but like most gaels i have admired the man and his achievements from afar.I have not always agreed with some of his opinions or some of his tactics but what I have admired is his resolution to create something and see it through to what has mostly been successful conclusions. I was always touched by his devotion to his faith and his daughter and making her pivotal in all he achieved with Tyrone was an inspiration to so many young girls to get involved in the GAA, she showed that young beautiful vibrant girls had a place in the GAA and with  her father by her side it created an image that for me pushed the image of the GAA forward  into the 21st century. The loss that must be felt by the Hartes and McAreaveys at this time is with out doubt of unimaginable proportions, they are now in a place that none of us ever want to visit but alas some of will at some time in our lives. To both families I extend my sympathy as a father and a husband  and my prayers are with you. No one man deserves to have so much tragedy bestowed upon them. R.I.P.

You got that right! your no expert. Cant say I noticed you over around the club today. After all an interloper from Killough making a nuisance of himself  would stick out like a pound of sausages at a bar mitzvah. You've had a long day, alba/clownjim are off to bed. :-[

Fair play to you alba! coming the whole way from Killough to congratulate the mighty Burren men whom you seem to be very familiar with from afar. No doubt you had a scoop or one with that other Burren diehard Clownjim (sorry Downjim), pint in one hand reproductive organ in the other (both of ye). For one with such an indepth knowledge of every other club in the county and the mental  stability of their players and management how has wee James overlooked your vast experience and not had you on board by now. Get one thing straight if this is an example of what you plan to contribute in the forthcoming season no one is interested in biased assessment in favour of your own club while taking cheap shots at members from other clubs, self praise is no praise.  Like I said before re; Downjim, a proud club like Burren and those members you have mentioned ( i know each and every one of them, personally) would cringe with embarrassment at reading your drivel. Congratulations to Burren. Kicking on from such a sound foundation is what matters, and it will benefit the county in the long run.

Ive been paying £12/13 pm for last 4 years into Denplan insurance. The best money  spent in a long time. I go twice a year for a good check up and clean and have not needed any fillings in that time. Thers no doubt it appears expensive but I think it has possibly saved me in the long run my dentist always gives sound advice and it gives you an incentive to look after your teeth, get an electric toothbrush will clean your teeth better than any manual one.

The wife was sick last year and she was house bound for the winter. Heat on from when I left for work until we went to bed (mostly) went through about 700 L in 4 months. Would work out at 6 L's a day. Old boiler probably not that efficient. Hope that might help.

Ill raise you on that! Got 1000ltrs 8 weeks ago the heating packed in the other nite so naturally I thought the pipes had froze. I nearly passed out when I realised the oil had run out. Thats £60 a week in oul money herself and the kids are using when Im out knocking my pan in. Have now turned the thermostat down and lettin it run 24/7. Thinking of getting a condenser after xmas I think I will need to do something with the house and 2 granny flats to run off it. Dont say get rid of the grannys ther both empty ther for my day when the kids or wife kick me out.
