Still the only dealing Horan has had that's belied his inexperience. Mostly excellent work but he let a time bomb develop by not playing Mort at times when he clearly deserved to and would have given the team a better chance, he essentially strung him along.

Mort is Mort so if he wasn't fond of him or his attitude he should have dropped him after the league when Mayo had a big stretch of time before the Leitrim game and cause the minimal level of disruption to the panel.
Ah, the Mortimer saga is finished and it's time to move on. I'd agree with what FTB has to say. I used to have great time, and still have, for the little bugger; love him or hate him, you could rely on him to provide entertainment.
But I don't think Horan left him off for any reason other that he wasn't fitting in to the general game plan. Damned if I know what that was but it was plain that he was getting his preferred 15 together as the summer approached.
As the championship began, it was obvious that he still hadn't decided on his corner forward players.
Mort was in the running along with O'Connor, Freeman, Varley, Doherty and possibly one or two more. Horan was looking for lads who would fit into his game plan and I felt Conoreen was at a disadvantage here vis a vis the rest in the running.
He was in his late 20s and obviously his ability to adapt to the changed conditions was limited.
The others were all years younger and probably have their best years to come, while Mort had to make an immediate impact if he was to get a regular place. Now, he put in some mighty displays for the county and could never be faulted for his devotion but Horan wasn't  prepared to re-jig his plans just to accommodate him.

I think in modern football there is no place for the player that thinks its all about him. The only possible exception is where the player is off huge talent - I'm talking a Canavan, a Gooch etc (neither of which were anything but team players btw). I think this is what happened to Mortimor and I  think his reaction to not being played justified the managers decision. Mayo will be better for it in the long run.

What's the likely midfield pairing on the team? I'd like to see them go head to head with Longford and see how that goes.

Safe to say Conor won't be getting a recall and rightly so, lads only out for themselves have no business in a team sport.

The best thing that could happen in Dublin is for Willie and his fools to be left sitting protesting at the dail, no tricolour on display (Dail is not sitting), no Eirigi eejits or Republican Sinn Fein or other scumbags to start trouble and maybe two guards hanging around. What Willie wants is a riot so he can say - "look what happened in Dublin when we asked them to remove their flag, they went mad just like in the North". The TV pictures should show nothing at all then his protest will have the complete opposite effect he was hoping for.

But can we hope the plastic paddies from Eirigi and the like will have the brains to see this - probably not!

Think lyng is still working in Mayo and can't give the commitment.

Yeah, he is a teacher in Ballina or Knockmore or somewhere in North Mayo. Can't comment on whether it is a commitment thing or an injury thing. Great shame as he's a top player when he is going well.

According to todays Indo, the tricolour will no be flying on Leinster house next Saturday when Willie and his friends come down to visit. So it seems he really will be asking sarcastically for the flag to be lowered as it will already have been the day before. What an idiot, there is not even one tiny bit of sense behind what he is doing (except that is to cause a riot).

Have to beat Offaly first to be sure to top group. Longford have to beat Wicklow to top their group then we'd play them.

I was just stating the obvious not having a go at anyone.

Well it read like you were saying he only took easy frees - if thats not what you meant then apologies. I expect he doesn't have the distance for the ones further out.

Ffs, he scored 9 points and cut out a lot of the silly shots he used to be at and ye are making sly digs. Give the lad a break.

Bet 1-10 to 0-11.

A decent display, did well around the pitch at different times but as Westside says we had no scoring threat apart from Dunne, who scored 0-09. I thought our Half back line was good, decent in the middle but again no scoring threat at all from half forward. FB line was pretty solid too apart from the goal. Declan McKiernan had a real bad game and I wonder can he hold his nerve at this level. Still Down are a team that contest an AI final not so long ago and Cavan extremely young team. Lots to work on but a decent enough start.
