GAA Discussion / Re: GAA Rules

I thought so.  I was surprised when I saw Azurri (I think) jerseys but I thought that they were replica jerseys.  Is this the New Zealand connection that was metioned?

Well done Mayo. 1-19 suggests that you have a potent attack.  But 3 goals conceeded.  Is there some problems in goal as some posters suggested earlier.

Any word on the team yet?  I think we could do it if things have settled down in the camp.  What are the odds like for a Cavan win?

But if she has a lexus, maybe she could do the shopping for all her neighbours!.

Has there ever been a collection of the Eugene McGee articles ever been done?  He talkk a lot of sense and it is a pity that he is not a pundit on RTE for the Sunday Game.  Contentious but not as smug as Joe Brolly.

I was pleased when I saw when we drew.  I think that we could win this if only for badness sake.  In the words of Cop. Jones, "they don't like it up em".  Although Mayo should win (two AI finals in last few years but again that should give us hope!), it is a marvellous excuse to go west young men.

Need you ask when we got hammered by the Gaels.  Do we need to get Donal out of retirement.

Thanks for the answer Homer.  Good luck to them.
So it appears that the GAA condon this practice.  I thought that recently someone fell foul of this recently

Will we miss them?  Johnson played with DCU but in the final they won, terrible wether but he didn't play as well as Mortimer.  So will we miss him.   I don't think so.  Cahill is not a corner back.  He is a direct player and doesn't seem to have the "cuteness" required.  Should the postion be given to someone who plays there for their club.  The   ideal would be a Tony Sculion clone.  Re. the gunnar, he doesn't appear to be very glic witness coming back from america and expecting to play well the next day.  A management failure to allow him to start?

I have been flitting in and out of this discussion so some of my questions may have been answered.

1) are the players getting a transfer to St. Brendan's  If they have been transfered, surely they can't play for their clubs until next year.

2)  what has the county board said about this? More importantly, what has Croke park said about it?

The qualifiers when the happen will be of a standard that is as high as these vguys woud ever play.  Surely they want to prove themselves.

Surely the obvious person to talk about is Sean Boylan.  Was he not a hurler rather thanh a footballer but how many different groups of players did he bring to all-ireland success?

I can see the reason why clubs go for outside managers (players may be used to a particular trainer) but if there is no desire within the team, even Micko will not work.

Re goalkeepers, the first training  a goalkeeper should get ti o attack the bal.  Look at attacker coming in on goal.  As he gets nearer, the goal keepr wll throw his a_se at the ball.  What he should do is stand up and make the attacker make a decision.  When the attacker makes the decision, the goalkeeper should attempt to block the kick.

GAA Discussion / Re: Positions on thepark

Some good ideas but to use a Canningism, my idea of a good "40"man is one who act as the "fulcrum" of the attack.  The ball is played through him, he forages along the half forward line, is available to link with the midfield and the man on the square (who want to be pedantic and correct me and say the small parallelogram is that another Canningsm).  He doesn't necessarily have to be the best scorer but he makes things happen.  The best one I saw playing was Donegalman Eamonn McNiallis for NIHE Dublin (Later DCU) and a Galway man Tom Gerety (DCU) fado fado.  Wonder where they are now?

It is amazing what you think about when you have too much time on you hands.  I have always been interested where the term to "Play on the 40" came from. Is it a particular Cavan/Longford term?  People may line out at centre half forward but it is a special player who is a good "40"man.  It is a lost art now that total football is now the norm.  The person I think of first as a good "40" man is Oige Moran.  Does any one have any ideas?

Thanks. I guess I was just being lazy.  That said, your post could just have said yes (if you knew).  I suppose your answer was the best way as I guess I shouldn't be lazy.

Saw the game last night.  Brilliant!  Showing my age here
but was that kind of football more enjoyable to watch than todays
where people are immediately surrounmded and the ball passed
10 yards ala Baskeatball.  And both teams played this way although
Kerry had a little more finesse.  great to watch.
