Mayo got beat because they let Paddy Bradley get going. If you stop him early his effect can be nullified. He scored 1-10 in an ulster match a couple of years ago against Monaghan (I think it was monaghan) yet they were tight from the start in the ulster semi and he was very quiet - tho he did get a sloppy goal

On Sunday all but one of the Derry forwards scored from play. In the Monaghan game Bradley and Muldoon were quiet because the ball never came into that half of the pitch...I mean Derry had 2 wides for the entire game...they didnt even get a chance to do anything and Bradley still got a goal. I think over the last two games Derry have shown there is no longer the same over-reliance on Paddy Bradley to score as we now have other forwards who can do the business...Devlin, Gilligan, Lynch, McGoldrick Muldoon...so I think your a bit off the mark here timmy!

I havent seen the game or the point in question but I wouldnt be overly surprised if a replay was ordered.
With the number of issues taken to the Disputes Resolution Committe over thing like suspensions and video evidence, there is every possibility the same could be done here.
I've read some people saying Derry should just use it as motivation....the players would want an Ulster title every bit as much as the Tryone players do. You couldnt blame then for feeling hard done by if the point was so obviously not a point.
Difficult one to call and I know in the past nothing would have happened, but as I said in this day and age when solicitors are handling these sort of things for players and teams anything could happen.

A 10 point defeat was very disappointing, but I don't think Mayo were realistically 10 points inferior to Derry.
When Mayo drew level about 10 minutes into the second half, they had the possession and the chances to take the lead - Andy Moran kicked some terrible wides, C Mort was also very poor.
We didn't take the lead and when Derry got their goal (bad judgement by Clarke) some Mayo heads seemed to drop. Cunniffe and Kilcoyne going off injured also seemed to have an effect.
Having said that, Derry took some excellent scores, Paddy Bradley was brilliant. They isolated him on Liam O'Malley and he caused havoc.
As said before, the younger lads were the best performers for Mayo - Trevor Howley and Tom Cunniffe were excellent. Heaney also had a very good game.
I think the criticism of JOM is justified to a certain extent, in that he left it until after the Galway game before carrying out any experimentation. But the changes he made since have worked in my view. He is the right man to build the next Mayo team.
I think yesterday in Celtic Park was probably the last we've seen of Kevin O'Neill, David Brady, Ciaran McDonald and James Nallen in the green and red - wonderful players for Mayo, given so much to the county.

I'm not trying to rub salt in the wounds here, but the reason why Mayo had so many wides was due to the immense pressure put on the forward by the Derry defence. They were forced to shoot from impossible angles or positions as they had no choice. You must remember this is the same Mayo forwards that score 19 points in the win over Cavan, those forwards dont become bad or loose the skills in the space of one game. The simple fact was that they didnt get the time on the ball to take a meaningful shot.
I thought on the day Derry were at least 10 points the better side. Apart from that 10 minute spell at the start of the second half when Mayo had a lot of possession, Derry dominated all over the pitch.
In my opinion Mayo are a good side with a sprinkling of some excellent young players and then the older fellas like McDonald, Brady and Trevor Mortimer (who I thought was Mayo's best player). I wouldnt bet against yous next year provided the older fellas stay a while longer.

The mightiest Derry performance  I have seen in a long time....definately an improvement from the Armagh game even.
Lynch did do really well when he came on but it might have taken the withdrawal from the original starting line up to get the performance out of him.

Really happy with the determination, spirit and skill they players showed...this is how we all want to see our team approach a game, and continuing to do it will undoubtedly attract more supporters to every game.

Cant wait for the draw to see who we get next...some big hitters in there yet but think we have a good chance of beating anyone now if we can keep the heads and build on each game.

For the Derry v Armagh game the tickets were £10 or 15euro. So I'd guess they'd be the same for this game.

Brick I hope that you will see greatness before your eyes tomorrow and end up naming the baby Billie Joe

Like you Barney I hope I will see greatness before my eyes tomorrow....a great goal by Paddy Bradley, followed up by a great goal by Enda Muldoon and then a wave of great points from the half forward line....then we'll name the baby Daire!

If the Derry team that played Armagh show up, I think we will shade it.
Especially given home advantage and the fact the Muldoon will probably come on as an impact sub.
Really looking forward to the game as I think it has the potential to be a real spectacle....just hope I make it, my missus is about to have a kid at any moment... :o :o :o

I read somewhere that Kevin McGuckain still wont be fit....if he isnt fit why has be been named in the subs for all games so far?

The derry half forward line was actually better than you might think....Paul Murphy, Mark Lynch and Barry McGoldrick....all scored from play. Indeed McGoldrick scroed point of the game from way out on the wing. Paul Murphy wins loads of breaks, is strong, defends, attacks and scores from distance. Lynch is fantastic when he runs at defence, but admittedly I thought he didnt have his best game against Armagh.

Now Gilligan usually plays centre half, but was injured from the start and switched with Lynch into corner forward and that is why he came off. He was actually doin ok until the injury forced him to withdraw.

Remember now....all three half forwards scored from play against ARMAGH.

I think there are plenty of teams in the country who would like a half forward line like that.

you mayo boys seem to forget that Lockhart isnt our only top class defender...McCloy, probably one of the top 3 full backs in the country...McGoldrick who admittedly yous might not have heard of is turning into a real find, kept Hanratty of monaghan scoreless and did a good job against armagh, he is more than able to man mark someone. then we have Gerard O'Kane, traditionally a half back but can do a job in the corner on his day...even if his form hasnt been great yet this year. Not to mention Kevin McGuckain, on the road to recovery has been on the bench for the last two games. I'm not sure how close he is to returning to first team action but I reckon not far away as his realistic target would have been the Ulster final, also this weekend.

Yous also seem to be forgeeting that we have 3 full forwards, bradley of course who is improving every game and scored 5 against Armagh and 1-2 against monaghan, Enda Muldoon who didnt play against armagh due to flu, collie devlin...yous might not have heard of him but he has all-ireland club honours with ballinderry, was our best forward against armagh and you will see just how good he is come saturday. Then we have players who can drop in there, Mark Lynch, Conleith Gilligan, and 2 or 3 very nippy forwards on the bench.
I'm not saying we are definately going to win, but listening to some of the mayo posters on here you may well be underestimating the threat derry have.

I said it before, if Derry can win their fair share in the middle third then I think our forwards have a better chance of scoring than yours with the quality of our full back line. So provided we get that fair share around the middle, I'll be going for Derry by a point or 2.

Having watched Mayo beat Cavan on Saturday I don't think Derry will have too much trouble here. As long as Derry break even around the middle they will win. Mayo FB line is poor and they will struggle with high ball into Muldoon and any ball into Bradley. I expect Lockhart to pocket mortimor. A confident Derry team is nearly impossible to beat in Celtic park.

In my opinion the Derry fullback line and full forward line are superior to those of Mayo, but the rest of the field is 50/50.
I think if we can get fair share around the middle third we should shade it by a point or two, but only if the right Derry team show up.
If the team against Monaghan show up, and judging on how we've perfromed in the passed after a big win that might well be the case, Mayo will destroy us. But, if we play the way we can, I think we will be too physical around the middle third for Mayo and as such the Derry verdict.

I hope this doesnt come across as being over-confident because I am anything but.

QuoteThe ref gave in time and time again to armagh players and management harrassing him and even in some of todays papers i read the he gave a lot of inexpicable frees to armagh...

The only example of this is when, in the 2nd half, the ref changed his mind & give Derry a free in (which they scored from!). He initially gave the free to Armagh...only for a roar from the 40 Derry Supporters to change his mind!!

I remember the incident you mention alright, but it was an obvious Derry free, the ineptitude of the ref was show up again though as he pointed the wrong way then caught himself on.
On 2 occassions I sam him give Derry a line ball correctly only for "big" joe and and stevie mcd come running and jumping and shouting at the ref. On taking the line ball the ref promplty blew his whistle and gave a free to armagh for nothing that I could see. Armagh scored a point directly from one of these and indirectly from the second just at the start of the second half.
Also the number of times Aaron kernan got away with fouling and indded was given the free was scandalous. I even read one of the other Armagh poster commenting on this earlier. It seems the referee was too weak to stand up to Armagh crowd and management.
One of the other Armagh poster posed the question why was pat macaneany on the line when he should have reffed the game. I agree completely. It was probably the biggest qualifier match and should have ahad the best referee. Not some week nobody who wanted to make a name for himself.

I think both sides would agree that the ref was awful, from a Derry perspective we felt he favoured Armagh more, but then I'm sure Armagh fans probably feel they were hard done by. Nature of the game.

Armagh will be there or thereabouts next year regardless of whether Kernan and his old guard leave, but as for the enigma that is this Derry side who know what lies ahead. On our day can beat anyone, but we could also get beat by anyone. Here's hoping we get a few more days in the sun anyway.

I have to laugh at the computer nerds giving their expert opinions without actually attending games.  Reading many of the posts You would think Armagh were so much better than Derry and Derry stole the game because the ref did not give Armagh one deserved free.  i was at the game and I thought the ref was very generous to Armagh -  He gave them many soft frees and was inconsistent.  The game was close and hard fought with Derry managhing to score a couple of vital scores near the end for a deserved victory

Totally agree with this comment. The ref gave in time and time again to armagh players and management harrassing him and even in some of todays papers i read the he gave a lot of inexpicable frees to armagh...so stop the whinging about one free at the end yous thought yous should have got. Aaron kernan fouled mcgoldrick all day and armagh got a couple of scores as a direct result when the ref didnt blow him up, so no point complaining.
This was a tremendous performance from this derry team (I for one thought it would be the end of the year for us b4 the game). Remember we are also missing two players who are as important to us as clarke and bellew are to armagh in Muldoon and Kevin Mcguckain. So injuries cant be blamed for a defeat either. On the day, Derry deserved the win and most of the Armagh supporters around us said the same thing when the match was over.
Can we beat Mayo? If we can beat Armagh there's no reason why not, but this Derry team can never be relied on to put 2 performances together, so who knows. Here's hoping though.
