The current system is that every school regardless of grade A, B or C can send up to 6 players to a trial.  At the trial, teams are picked and a number of games are played while viewed by the three selectors.  After the initial trials players are called back to a final trial and the final 15 are chosen.

Apparently the selectors were John McElroy (Fermanagh), Tony Scullion (Derry) and Mr Murphy (Donegal).

Are you sure about that, take your points?  I was lead to believe that only the schools in the MacRory were able to send 6 players and the rest of the schools had to send less.  I'm not sure how many though but not 6.

Is Conan Grugan still at CBS? Shocking if he is and didn't get an All-Star along with Ronan O'Neill

Grugan has moved on and Ronan O' Neill has been injured for a while now.

think there is about 8 or 9 of them players that deserve the award, many of the best players in this years MacRory cup have been overlooked. the Selection process needs to be looked at

Is this years selection any different than any other year?  I don't think so.  Rarely is the team that is picked a true reflection of the best players at this level and its the same again this year.  Not sure if there is another way of picking the team as it is an wonderful honour but an awful way of picking it.

It would be interesting to find out how many MacRory team captains in recent years were awarded All Stars as well.

Damian Casey from Dungannon Academy got a Hurling All Star, is he the first Tyrone man to get an Ulster Colleges Hurling All Star
Another lad from the Academy got one a couple of years ago if I remember correctly.

You're right HS, Naomh Colmcille man if my memory serves. Omagh have got 2 hurling all stars, both of them back in the early 90s I think

Sorry, I was asking Take Your Points how many football All Stars Omagh CBS got this year.  John Mc Cullagh was one, I expect Ronan O' Neill got one as well.

Academy take 2 more MacRory points

BT MacRory Cup : St Patrick's Dungannon      3-14 St Mary's Magherafelt 1-14

St Patrick's Academy made it two wins from two starts yesterday when three second half goals nailed the points against St Mary's Magherafelt in an entertaining fixture in MUSA.

Conor McCann and Nathan Rocks more than held their own in the Magherafelt midfield and that gave their forward line a good supply with Aaron Devlin on 1-5 from play giving the Academy defence plenty of problems.

However there was still enough quality at the other end of the field to do the business for the Tyrone side, especially when Harry og Conlon came in as a sub at the start of the second half.

Scores from Devlin and Conor Kearns had levelled the match after the Academy had led 0-10 to 0-7 at the break.

Harry og then buried two goals in quick succession, before retiring to the bench with what looks like a recurrence of a hamstring problem.

Aaron Devlin reduced the arrears to a goal when he hit the net in the 48th minute, but a long ball from Kiefer Morgan fell loose in the Magherafelt goal area and Aidan McGarrity was on hand to stab it across the line and secure the points for the Academy.

St Mary's are back in action on Thursday, taking on Omagh CBS at Kildress (11am), while St Patrick's Maghera take their bow on Friday with a tie against holders St Colman's Newry at Derrytresk (11am).

St Patrick's Dungannon : Harry og Conlon 2-0, Aidan McGarrity 1-0, Liam Gervin 0-5, 0-2 frees, Ryan Devlin 0-3, Kiefer Morgan 0-2, Stefan lavery 0-2, Matthew Carbery 0-1 free, Dwayne Quinn 0-1.

St Mary's Magherafelt : Aaron Devlin 1-5, Conor Kearns 0-7, 0-6 frees, Niall Higgins 0-1, Antoin McElhome 0-1.

Dungannon putting up some big scores at present but a good showing from Magherafelt to run them close.  All to play for.

Enniskillen in Brilliant Form
Sat 23rd Oct 2010

BT MacRory Cup : St Michael's Enniskillen 3-21 Abbey 1-7

St Michael's Enniskillen laid down a strong marker for this year's BT MacRory Cup with a comprehensive defeat of Abbey CBS in Killeshil.

They dominated the first half with Sean Quigley and Richard Donnelly in top form and had the game in the bag at half time with a lead of 2-11 to 0-1 in response from Rory Keenan.

Quigley and John Joe Strain were the goal-scorers and Dominic Corrigan took the opportunity to blood a few substitutes in the second half.

It made for a more competitive game with Enniskillen's Kane Connor and Abbey's Shea Millar swapping goals.

However with 6 points each from Quigley, Eddie Courtney and Richard Donnelly, Enniskillen look capable of mounting a serious challenge on the recognised top four of Maghera, Dungannon, Omagh and holders St Colman's.

Dungannon, clear winners over Cavan in their opening game, are back in action on Monday when they take on St Mary's Magherafelt at MUSA (4pm).

St Michael's : Sean Quigley 1-6, John Joe Strain 1-1, Kane Connor 1-0, Eddie Courtney 0-6, Richard Donnelly 0-6, Aidan Breen 0-1, Nevin O'Donnell 0-1.

Abbey : Shea Millar 1-0, Rory Keenan 0-3, Daragh McAuley 0-2, Gerard McGovern 0-1, James Delahunt 0-1.

By all accounts Dom Corrigan has 'assembled' a very strong side this year and won't be far away at the end of the day.  I believe it was the same old Abbey tactics, annoy the hell out of the man off the ball and hope that this will be enough to win the game.  Enniskillen sound very strong.

Macartan's win again in MacRory

BT MacRory Cup : St Macartan's Monaghan   2-15 St Patrick's Cavan           1-9.

St Macartan's Monaghan picked up their second brace of points in the BT MacRory Cup, beating St Patrick's Cavan at Threemilehouse yesterday.

The Sem went 2-3 to 0-3 up inside the opening 10 minutes with goals from Mel Boyce and Christopher McKenna.

However Dara McVitty and Stephen Brady kept St Patrick's in touch and they turned around still those two goals in arrears 2-6 to 1-6.

At the start of the second half Monaghan shot seven wides in succession and were then knocked back by a goal from Andrew Graham.

However they recovered their composure and fired over some fine points in the last quarter to come through 2-15 to 1-9

St Macartan's : Mel Boyce 1-1, Christopher McKenna 1-0, Shane Carey 0-2, Ryan McGuigan 0-2, Liam Hahassey 0-2, Fergal McGeough 0-2, Padraig McKenna 0-2, Sean McKenna 0-1, James McAllister 0-1.

St Patrick's Cavan : Andrew Graham 1-1, Dara McVitty, 0-3, Stephen Brady 0-3, Paul Sweeney 0-1, Shane Kelly 0-1.

Champions off to good start

BT MacRory Cup : St Colman's Newry 2-8     St Patrick's Armagh 2-6

MacRory and Hogan Cup champions St Colman's Newry got this year's MacRory Cup campaign off to a positive start with a 2-8 to 2-6 victory over St Patrick's Armagh in Pairc Esler yesterday afternoon.

A penalty goal after 20 minutes from Paul McGeown pulled back St Colman's early advantage on the score-board and the teams were level 0-6 to 1-3 at the break.

However two goals midway through the second half, the first from Jerome Johnstone and the second from Keelin Haughey, looked like giving the champions the space to push on for a comfortable victory.

Armagh stood up to the challenge though and McGeown's second goal in the 55th minute narrowed the difference to a single point.

But Jerome Johnstone steadied the ship for St Colman's with a late score.

The next action is on Friday (3pm) in Threemilehouse between St Macartan's and Cavan while Killeshil is the venue on Saturday (11am) for Enniskillen and Abbey CBS.

St Colman's : Jerome Johnstone 1-1, Keelin Haughey 1-0, Ryan Johnstone 0-3, Caolan Mooney 0-2, Conor Gough 0-1.

St Patrick's : Paul McGeown 2-1, Simon McCoy 0-2, Ciaran McKeever 0-1, Conor McNally 0-1, Matthew Jones 0-1.

Colaisti Inis Eoghain Launched

A new era in Inishowen schools football will begin when Coláistí Inis Eoghain play their first match in the Ranafast Cup in Ulster Colleges football against St Michael's of Enniskillen in Burt on Friday afternoon 17th September (throw-in 3.15pm).

Established under the auspices of the Inishowen GAA Board and the five local secondary schools – Scoil Mhuire Buncrana, Crana College Buncrana, Carndonagh Community School, Moville Community College and Colaiste Chineál Eoghain Buncranncha – Coláistí Inis Eoghain will play in the Rannafast Cup, the Division 1 competition for boys aged under 16 and a half. Later in the year a second team will participate in the under 14 and a half, Corn na nÓg Cup which gets under way at the start of November.

Managed by Donegal's 2006 Ulster minor championship winning manager Sean Clerkin, the Rannafast Cup team, with a squad of twenty four have been training since the middle of July and all are itching for the throw in. Monaghan native Clerkin, who is assisted by Sean Noonan from Buncrana, Robert Farren from the Malin club and Laurence Hegarty also from Buncrana, told the squad at an official launch night in Carndonagh GAA club, that the opportunity to play in Ulster Colleges football, against some of the top schools in the Province will help them prepare to make the breakthrough into Donegal squads at U16, minor, U21 and ultimately senior level.

Trials are ongoing for the Corn na nÓg squad, which has over forty players competing for places on a side that will be managed by Moville Community College teacher Sean O'Hare, an Armagh native who knows a bit about the level of competition they can expect to meet, and he will be assisted by Jimmy Hegarty from Moville, Damian Dowds of Burt and Michael McMenamin from Muff.

"This high level of competition will present young Inishowen players with a great opportunity to build on the coaching they have received at primary schools, which has been ongoing in the area since 2004 and the success they have enjoyed at club level in recent years," Inishowen GAA Board Chairman Gerard Callaghan said at the official launch, where Gerry Doherty, from main sponsors SuperValu Carndonagh, presented two new kits to the teams.

"Everyone is thrilled at the huge investment Supervalu Carndonagh have given to the initiative, especially in this difficult economic climate" Callaghan continued. "Our thanks go to Gerry Doherty and we hope Supervalu Carndonagh will get good value from their association with Coláistí Inis Eoghain in the weeks and months ahead."

Mr Callaghan also thanked Liam Grimley of Healthwise Pharmacies Buncrana and Moville for sponsoring two superb medical kits, which will be of great benefit to the players and their mentors during games and training.

The Rannafast Cup starts with a match against St Michael's Enniskillen who have kindly agreed to travel to Burt for the opening game, and they will then play St Eunan's College on Tuesday 28th September (Venue TBC), followed by the visit to The Scarvey Buncrana, on Thursday 30th September, of defending champions Omagh CBS, who are managed by former Tyrone star Ciaran McBride. Everyone at Colaisti Inis Eoghain are thrilled that Omagh too have agreed to play the game at an Inishowen venue under lights, which should attract a bumper crowd to the Inishowen venue.

The final game in the group for the newcomers will be against St Pats Keady from Armagh at the beginning of October. Following the group stages the top two teams will qualify from Group A, for the knock out stages, which continue into November with the final scheduled for Saturday 13th November.

The Corn na nÓg, meanwhile starts in November with the first game against the mighty St Pats Maghera in the week commencing Monday 8th November followed by games against St Mary's Magherafelt, St Pats Armagh and finishing off with a derby game against St Eunans Letterkenny.

Colaisti Inis Eoghain were further boosted in the run up to their opening game, when it was announced that the Inishowen GAA Board were successful in their recent application for a Texaco Sports Bursary, which will help to fund the joint venture between the five secondary school and the seven clubs in the peninsula. The award will be presented at a function in Dublin at the end of September.

how many of these will be playing macrory in 2010/2011?

14. John McCullagh – An Caisleán Glas
15. Ronan Ó Néill -An Omaigh
22. Cahir McCullagh – An Caisleán Glas

These lads will be available but playing will be dependent on the choice of the 2010-11 management team of Kieran Donnelly and Finnian Moriarty.

I think there were seven or eight of the present Tyrone minor team who are/were students at Omagh CBS - thats some representation.  What has happened to last years management team?

great playin it with good players....

thou frustrating playin it with ones who don't believe in dealers trick...

Not just confined to Christmas but any time the lights went out - very popular in the rural pubs as well where men would have played for Hams and Turkeys for Christmas.

I must say that I could spend a whole day playing Patience (Solitaire).  I've been in holidays all over the world and find it the most relaxing game ever - I would rarely play it at home but on holidays I go mad for it.
