General discussion / What? A whining Nordie?
March 27, 2012, 04:59:45 PM
A brilliant article in the Irish Independent. People might not like the Journalist but he has hit the nail on the head with this one.

QuoteWell, have you stopped laughing yet?

I am referring, of course, to the sublime and thoroughly hilarious spat between Armagh and the Republic of Ireland.

QuoteAnd proving that nobody does self-righteous whingeing quite like Northerners -- only Scousers could give them a run for their money when it comes to this -- they claimed that the sight of some Laois players singing 'God Save The Queen' and referring to the Armagh players as "British Bastards" was "provocation in the extreme"
.
Quote
One Sunday afternoon, Londonderry were the visiting team and when Shels scored the visiting fans turned on me and started to call me "a Free State bastard".

Does that mean I was racially abused?

General discussion / Rugby World Cup 2023- Ireland
March 25, 2012, 12:48:33 PM
Leo Varaker Minister for Tourism, transport and sport was on the Sports show yesterday with Des Cahill discussing the possibility of ireland making a bid to host the Rugby World cup. It would be an All Ireland event. It would need the support of the GAA to make it possible. There were however points to note.

1. Ireland (North and South) would have to pay a fee of €160 million euro to the IRB to host the event.
2. We would need 11 stadiums to host it

Ravenhill, Aviva, Thomond park and the RDS would be the four Rugby venues to host it which means we would need seven other venues to host it. the majority of these would have to be GAA venues.

Windsor Park (Soccer) Croke Park, Celtic Park?, Pearse Stadium, Casement park, Mc Hale Park, Fitzgerlad stadium, Pairc I Chaoimh, Tullamore, Portlaois are all possible venues that could host it. Windsor park and Casement park are all set to undergo there own renovations, but the GAA stadiums will need a bit of investment. leo Varaker hinted that it would be worth there while i.e development money.

GAA Discussion / Disgraceful Mayo GAA suppoters
March 13, 2012, 04:05:17 PM
Referees are volunteers and this was thuggish behaviour from the Mayo GAA supporters. Heavy sanctions should be imposed. A deduction of points and forfeit home advantage in the next match.

Kevin Connelly from Hollymount goes out onto the field with a handful of his colleagues when referee Barry Cassidy sounds his final whistle. They're entrusted with the job of escorting him off the pitch but, unfortunately, one of them proceeded to tell the official what he thought of his performance too.
In the part of the stand overlooking the tunnel area, a swathe of disgruntled Mayo supporters gather to express their ire to the Derry referee. One middle-aged man hurls a programme which hits Cassidy on the face. Another supporter throws a plastic bottle which misses.
Some supporters 'self-police' the situation, urging restraint, while a flock of stewards get Barry Cassidy into the dressing-room area.

GAA Discussion / GAA stars being abused on twitter
March 12, 2012, 04:07:28 PM
I use twitter to follow GAA, sports life and love. I find it a very good resource, I follow Soccer stars, celebritiies and GAA players. I felt bad for Conor Mortimer (who I follow) people were being real scumbags with derogatory comments towards him following Mayo's defeat to Down.. I see sometimnes these comments on GAA message boards especially about the Sligo manager but they never reach the level that is reached on twitter. Hopefully this Government will bring in legislation to curb this cyber bullying.

Great interview today on Newstalk. Fr Vincent Twoney really put Michael Nugent of Atheist Ireland back in his box!

"Atheist humanism produced the worst horrors history has ever witnessed. True or False?"

This  was a question from the teacher training programme at Hibernia College, which was challenged by Atheist Ireland when they complained that it was defamatory.

The coursework was set by Fr Vincent Twomey as part of the Catholic religious education module in their programme. The college have since stated: "we are now also intending to provide graduate student teachers with a second more pluralistic programme of ethical and religious education which reflects the faiths and beliefs of a wide range of religions and non-religious belief systems."

Michael Nugent is Chairman of Atheist Ireland and he joined Fr Michael Twomey on air with Jonathan to discuss the role of religion in education today. You can listen to the interview here.

GAA Discussion / Tommy Lyons and Mayo payment row
February 24, 2012, 10:32:33 AM
Sanctions should be taken against Mayo if this is true.

A former Mayo GAA chairman has denied that Tommy Lyons was asked how much money he would want to manage the county when he was interviewed for the vacant position in September 2010.

James Waldron, who was county board chairman at the time, said there was never a question of the former Dublin and Offaly manager being asked to "put into an envelope" the figure he was looking for to manage Mayo.

Lyons didn't get the post, which went to James Horan instead, but in the course of a discussion on RTE's 'Sport at Seven' last night, he made the astonishing claim that a Mayo official had asked him about what money he would require to do the job.

"When I was there (Mayo) and I was interviewed for the job, I was asked to put it in an envelope what I wanted to get paid for doing the job and I told him what part of 'I didn't want to get paid' did he not understand?" claimed Lyons.

"So that was a senior inter-county official as of only 12 months ago in a very clear breach of the guidelines."

Waldron, whose five-year term as chairman ended later that year, said any discussion on money focused solely on travel expenses at the time.

"We would have been trying to establish whether he was travelling from Dublin, where he is based, or from Louisburgh, where he has a holiday home and visits regularly," said Waldron. "That's all we would have wanted to know."

When contacted by the Irish Independent last night, Lyons stood over what he said in the interview and was adamant that a Mayo official had put the question of money to him

Local photographer Jonathan Curran was taking a series of 13 photographs of the picturesque area in an attempt to create a panoramic view when he came across something very unusual in one of his shots.

One of the images, which were taken less than a minute apart, appears to show an isolated female figure with the appearance of a 19th century Claddagh nun. Mr Curran said he was "freaked" to discover the strange appearance on the camera and checked the other 12 images but the elderly woman did not appear in any of the other pictures.

"The image was not visible either before or after the photograph was taken and was not captured in any of the other photographs, either going or coming. She just seemed to appear for a moment and then disappear. There were other people on the Long Walk that day, but they seemed oblivious to her presence," he explained.

The unnerving photo obtained by the Galway Independent clearly shows a distinct ghostly female figure and speculation has been rife since the photo emerged as to whether this is simply a optical illusion or a representation from beyond the grave.
