General discussion / Paintshop Pro help

I am going to up more pictures up on the Greencastle website this evening. Unfortunately there is 50 pictures and they all need to be resized. The though of going through all that again depresses me greatly.

My question is, is it possible to resize all pictures in one go? They are all the same size now and will be resized to the same size. There's bound to be an easier way.

Help, please help!

QuoteSinger Will Young has been attacked by a jealous gorilla.

The incident occurred while the Pop Idol star was visiting a gorilla orphanage in Cameroon for the Saving Planet Earth television series.

The animal noticed that his mate had taken a shine to the young crooner.

He said: "One of the gorillas kept making this noise that meant she fancied me.

"It didn't go down to well with the males. One gave me this look out of the corner of his eye and flung a huge rock against the fence right in front of my face."

GAA Discussion / Mc Namee Awards 2006
July 04, 2007, 04:23:04 PM
The winners of the 2006 Mc Namee Awards have been confirmed by the GAA. The Awards will be presented at a function in Croke Park on July 22nd. This year's winners are:

Best Lo ca l Radio Programme

A Lifetime 'til Sunday – Mid West Radio

Liam Horan and Mike Finnerty's well researched and presented review of the high points and disappointments of Mayo football from the mid 'Thirties up to the 2006 All-Ireland senior final is an informative and enjoyable programme that commands interest from start to finish and is radio presentation at its best.

Best Website

Doheny GAA Club, Dunmanway, County Cork www.dohenygaa.com

This web site has everything a great GAA web site should have.   Two particular aspects mark it out as exceptional. The first is the real sense of 'community' you get from it. Secondly, the site's use of multimedia features is impressive and shows a good grasp of how such features ca n make a club web site more useful as well as more enjoyable for visitors.

Best Club Media Production

"120 Years of GAA in Passage" by Matt Ahern

This is a stunningly produced book that will serve as a source of lo ca l history as well as an extremely readable book for any GAA fan. Author Matt Aherne is to be commended on completing the difficult task of producing what will be required reading to anyone from the area whilst never alienating those not familiar with this (predominantly) hurling pocket of Cork.

Best County Final Programme – Kildare Football Final

This programme had all the essential details of a truly souvenir programme for County Final day including an extremely colourful and attractive layout. But what  was really welcome and unusual in such programmes was the light, humorous  approach to some articles which made reading them a pleasure

Best County Yearbook – CLG Aontroma

Covering all codes and cultural aspects of the association in depth and with considerable style, this publi ca tion creates a strong impression of the special character of Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Chontae Aontroma. A series of insightful feature articles and striking photographs convey the personalities, youthful enthusiasm, club pride and community identity of members of the association in the county. Colourful, well-edited and at a very affordable price, this publi ca tion contains much to attract anyone interested in Cumann Lúthchleas Gael in Antrim and beyond.

Provincial Media Award – Roscommon Herald, All Ireland Minor Football Final Souvenir Supplement

From underdogs to champions, Roscommon's success in the All-Ireland minor football championship last Summer was one of the great stories of the year. The triumphs, the drama and the extraordinary excitement generated amongst their fanati ca l supporters before and after the victory over Kerry following a replay in Ennis is wonderfully and colourfully ca ptured in the 48 page supplement produced by the editorial team at the Roscommon Herald.

National Media Award – John Fogarty, Mail on Sunday

In his interview in Ireland on Sunday with Paul Caffrey and with his observations on all the issues that surround the Dublin team, John Fogarty not alone makes us aware of the pressures of being involved with football's most public team but also of the passions, desires and dreams of the management and the players as they search for All-Ireland glory.

Special Merit Award – Red Hand View (Tyrone)

Red Hand View is the Tyrone County Board's colourful and informative series of National football League match programmes produced for all of the county's home league games. The programme's include the musings of the team manager, reflections on past encounters, the view from the opposing ca mp, features on unsung heroes from the grassroots and many more novel contributions presented in a quirky, easy-to-read and well laid out publi ca tion which sets the standard for match programmes in the National League.

Best Photograph on a GAA Theme – John Kelly, Clare Champion

If photography is about the 'decisive moment' John Kelly certainly has the eye to ca pture it. His winning shot of a tearful, young Clare supporter would have been missed by many a photographer. It freezes an emotional, off-field moment that tugs at the heart strings and is a worthy winner. This is John's second award, having won a Mc Namee award previously in 1997.

Hall of Fame Award – John Campbell, Sunday Telegraph

John Campbell has worked with the Belfast Telegraph since the 1970's and is one of the most highly respected journalists covering Gaelic games. The GAA correspondent with the paper since the mid-80's, John previously won a Mc Namee Award for the Best Article in a County Yearbook (Down). He joins a distinguished list of former winners of the Hall of Fame Award including Micheál Ó Hehir, Seán Og Ó Ceallacháin, Paddy Down ey, Micheál O Muircheartaigh, Sean Kilfeather and Mick Dunne

QuoteA car on fire has been driven at the main terminal building at Glasgow Airport, police have confirmed.

Eyewitnesses have described a Jeep Cherokee being driven at speed towards the building with flames coming out from underneath.

They have also described seeing two Asian men, one of whom was on fire, who had been in the car.

The airport has been evacuated and all flights suspended following the incident at 1515 BST.

One eyewitness said: "I heard the sound of a car's wheels spinning and smoke coming out.

"I saw a Jeep Cherokee apparently as if it was trying to get right through the doors into the terminal building.

"There were flames coming out from underneath then some men appeared from in amongst the flames.

"The police ran over and the people started fighting with the police. I then heard what sounded like an explosion."

Eye-witness Richard Gray told BBC News 24: "A green Jeep was in the middle of the doorway burning.

"There was an Asian guy who was pulled out of the car by two police officers, who he was trying to fight off. They've got him on the ground.

"The car didn't actually explode. There were a few pops and bangs which presumably was the petrol."

Two men, one of whom was reported to be badly burned, were seen being led away in handcuffs.

Raymond Kennedy has become the new president of the Irish Football Association after a dramatic secret ballot on Friday night.

The voting ended in a tie between challenger Kennedy and Jim Boyce, who had held the position for 12 years.

Boyce, who will keep his Fifa and Uefa roles and has been made an honorary life president, decided to stand down, handing the top post to Kennedy.

David Martin is the new vice-president with Neil Jardine named treasurer.

"Northern Ireland football is on a high at the moment," said Boyce as he stood down.

"There is a new office bearer team elected and I will not be interfering in any way in the running of the Irish Football Association, or the decision making."

QuotePolice called over laptop lock-up

The Alliance Party's assembly team were left red faced after two laptop computers they had reported as stolen turned up in an office cupboard.

The laptops in question belonged to East Antrim MLA Sean Neeson and went missing from the party's Stormont office on Monday.

CSI officers dusted the room for fingerprints and people were searched as they left Parliament Buildings, but all to no avail.

Mr Neeson said the mystery was only solved the next day when his colleague Kieran McCarthy arrived for work.

"We didn't realise Kieran had put them away for safety.

"They turned up on Tuesday, we called the police and CSI came down and dusted the place for finger prints, but we didn't realise they were in the cupboard beside us."

Despite the mix-up, Mr Neeson said he believed they had taken the right course of action because two laptops had been stolen from Stormont earlier in June.

"I think there is a need for people to be careful anyway, most of the rooms here are unlocked," he added.

General discussion / Peter, six, on criminal list
June 16, 2007, 04:17:40 PM
Police sent a six-year-old boy one of a batch of letters aimed at encouraging known criminals to hand themselves in.

Peter Akers, of Derby, was mistakenly told by Derbyshire Police he had one last chance to "make a fresh start" before further action was taken.

Peter said: "The only thing I've done wrong recently is when I stole some sweets from my sister's room." Officers were sent to his house to apologise.

Threats by an extremist group against celebrity chefs Rick Stein and Jamie Oliver are being investigated by police.

Stein has extensive business interests in the north Cornwall port of Padstow, including a restaurant, hotel and fish and chip shop.

Oliver has set up one of his charitable Fifteen restaurants at Watergate Bay, also on the north Cornwall coast, training disadvantaged young people from the county.

The Cornish National Liberation Army (CNLA) said in an email received by the Plymouth-based Western Morning News newspaper that local people had approached their activists "for assistance" against Stein - described as "this English newcomer".

The email said it was "common knowledge" that Stein and his businesses were "held in contempt" by Cornish nationals who live in the Padstow area.

And "his vehicle and those of his clients and customers are also bona fide targets for our activists".

The CNLA described Oliver as "another incomer who has caused the inflation of house and other living costs at Cornish expense".

His clients and customers are also targets of the CNLA, said the email.

Devon and Cornwall Police said they take "very seriously any threats to commit criminal offences against individual, business, public service or the Crown and we will vigorously investigate any pre-meditated or publicised planned criminal activity".

The spokesman said: "We have made immediate contact with proprietors of various businesses and are actively working together, with a view to ensure that appropriate crime prevention measures are maintained."

School puts stop to 'pyjama mamas'

Parents taking their children to school were wearing their pyjamas

Looking at women in their nightwear has become a sight for sore eyes for the principal of one east Belfast primary school.

Joe McGuinness of St Matthew's Primary School has written a letter to parents asking them not to wear pyjamas while they drop their children off at school.

Mr McGuinness's letter said the trend was setting pupils a bad example and was also making staff uncomfortable.

He said as many as 50 women were gathering at the school gates in their nightwear every morning.

Sinn Fein representative in the area Niall O'Donnghaile said the most important thing was the fact that the parents were making the effort to make sure their children got to school.

'All Day Pyjama Syndrome'

"The principal at St Matthew's put the letter out and it is understandable that as the principal of the school he is concerned about how comfortable the staff are and the issue of setting an example for the children," he said.

"I have spoken to a number of parents with children at St Matthew's and they have told me that the figure of 50 would be very exaggerated.

"Since Mr McGuinness put the letter out the people involved have stopped, so fair play to those parents involved.

"They took the advice of the principal and obviously they did not realise the offence they were causing."

The journalist who first noticed the little known condition of ADPS or "All Day Pyjama Syndrome" was Robin Livingstone, editor of the Anderstown News.

"The 'pyjama mamas', as they're known, are the women who would leave their children to school in their pyjamas and, go about their business, go to the supermarket and go about their daily lives wearing their pyjamas," he said.

"What Joe McGuinness is arguing, it shows a lack of respect and it is showing a very bad example to the children."

New Pat Shortt film wins at Cannes

'Garage', the new film starring Pat Shortt, has won an award at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film, directed by Lenny Abrahamson and written by Mark O'Halloran, was awarded the CICAE Art and Essai Cinema Prize.

CICAE is the International Confederation of Art House Cinemas and the jury is made up of representatives of its members.

Abrahamson and O'Halloran were also the team behind the award-winning 'Adam & Paul'.

Co-financed by RTÉ, 'Garage' tells the story of Josie (Shortt), the misfit caretaker of a crumbling petrol station in rural Ireland who finds his life changed forever over the course of a summer.

Commenting on 'Garage's win, director Lenny Abrahamson said: "I am totally delighted with this award coming after such a fantastic reception for the film at Cannes. It's the best possible launch for its journey around the world."

QuoteA County Londonderry dentist has become the first Northern Ireland woman to conquer Mount Everest - four years after abandoning a previous attempt.

Hannah Shields, 41, was part of a team which made it to the top of the world's highest peak on Friday morning.

In May 2003, she narrowly failed to reach the summit due to exhaustion and atrocious weather conditions.

Friend and fellow runner Dermot Connolly said the Kilrea woman was exhausted but ecstatic.

"It was a tremendous achievement. She thought long and hard about going back.

"She was so near yet so far last time, it was a big decision to go back but the determination was there."

Exactly four years ago Ms Shields was forced to abandon her attempt less than 300 ft from the summit.

She had to return to camp suffering from exhaustion and the onset of frostbite. However, she vowed to try again at some point.

She set off for her latest expedition in April as part of the "Seven Summits" team of international climbers.

Her attempt to scale the world's most unforgiving peak was expected to take about two months - but she managed the challenge in about six weeks.

She scaled Everest by the arduous north face shortly before midnight on Friday and has returned safely back down the most dangerous part of the mountain.

The 23-strong expedition team, led by Russian Alex Abramov and including John Delaney from County Laois, comprised of 17 climbers, four guides and a doctor.

'Well prepared'

Her victory has delighted her coach at City of Derry Athletics Club, Noel McMonagle.

"We are over the moon," he said.

"We couldn't be more happy for Hannah because Hannah is one of these people that takes these challenges on and she follows everything through.

"Every bit of preparation went into Everest and to get so close the last time... And then come back now this time it shows, the resilience that Hannah has."

Ms Shields is no stranger to challenges and has been a member of the local Sparta athletics club for about seven years.

She represented Northern Ireland in international cross-country running as well as having track and cross-country championships to her credit.

In May 2003, Terence "Banjo" Bannon, 35, from Newry, County Down, reached the top of the Everest.

It was the first time a team from Northern Ireland had reached the summit.

Dawson Stelfox from Lisburn became the first man from the province to make it to the top in 1993.

Brown will enter No 10 unopposed

Gordon Brown has secured the backing of enough MPs to ensure he will not face a contest to become the next Labour leader and prime minister.

Mr Brown has 308 nominations, prompting his only rival, left-winger John McDonnell, to concede. He was 16 nominations short of the 45 required.

Mr McDonnell said he was disappointed on behalf of Labour Party members and it was a "blow to democracy".

Mr Brown should now take over unopposed after Tony Blair steps down on 27 June.

Nominations officially close on Thursday, but there are not enough remaining MPs to allow Mr McDonnell to run.

'Mathematically impossible'

He said: "With Gordon Brown having gained 308 nominations from Labour MPs, it is now mathematically impossible for me to reach the nominations I require to stand. There will not now be an election."

He congratulated Mr Brown, but said it was a shame party members would be denied "an opportunity of participating in a democratic election for the leader of this party".

"I had hoped by standing I would have given them a voice in this crucial decision."

Mr Brown's campaign said they would await the formal voting figures announced by the party on Thursday before making any statement.

But his campaign manager, Commons Leader Jack Straw, said that they were "delighted" the party was "uniting" behind the chancellor.

Labour MP for Cannock Chase, Dr Tony Wright, earlier told the BBC he had nominated Mr Brown as leader, but it had not yet been added to the Labour Party website.

This gives the chancellor more than the 308 nominations needed to avoid a contest.

Remaining MPs

Labour MP Andrew Mackinlay's office has reportedly said he would be nominating Mr Brown, although this has yet to be confirmed by the BBC.

A Labour spokesman said the party would not be commenting further on the nominations until they closed at 1230 BST on Thursday.

Of the other MPs yet to declare, the speaker cannot nominate and the deputy speaker, Sylvia Heal, has told the BBC she will not nominate anyone.

That leaves 15, including former home secretary Charles Clarke and former welfare reform minister and long-standing opponent of Mr Brown, Frank Field.

Candidates who get 45 or more nominations go to a ballot of party members, trade unionists and Labour MPs and European Parliament members.

In the deputy leadership contest, in which there are six candidates, only International Development Secretary Hilary Benn - with 42 nominations - has yet to get through to the national ballot.

Backbencher Jon Cruddas, Education Secretary Alan Johnson, Justice Minister Harriet Harman, Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain and Labour chairman Hazel Blears have all got through.

Those candidates who make it on to either ballot paper will take part in 10 hustings around the country ahead of a special conference in Manchester on 24 June, when the new leader and deputy leader will be named.

But even as the sole leadership candidate, Mr Brown will still take part in hustings.

On Wednesday he was at a campaign event in Manchester, outlining his ideas for an "environmental corps" for young people to combat climate change and saying he wanted the World Bank to be "a bank for the environment".

Mr Blair and deputy Labour leader John Prescott will hand over on 27 June.
