GAA Discussion / Re: Tragedy in Tyrone

Awful news again, but I hope people don't overreact and start pulling their kids out of sports. The average person is at a far, far greater risk of dying of heart problems through lack of exercise than through these very rare heart conditions.

It beggars belief the tragic, and almost identical circumstances surrounding these two young lads deaths.

I agree with the statement above, well the first part anyway. I would suggest however, that you don't type "Facts" unless you are certain about them.
It is true that exercise is good for the heart etc. but it also true that adolescents and young adults involved in competitive sport had a two and a half times higher risk of sudden death.
Conditions such as the one young Patrick Breen died of (and Cormac) are congenital and effect 1 in 500 people. The "Average" person as you call them, will not be pushing their heart to the same extremes, (i.e. intense exercise).

Your physical condition can in fact be a disguising factor in this type of circumstance. In many cases people do not have symptons, and the fitter you are the more likely you are to disguise
a problem. The average person granted, is more likely to have heart problems,  (as they get OLDER) through their poor lifestyle habits, but unfortunately this SADS (sudden Adult Death Syndrome) is more likely to cause sudden death while the heart is being pushed to the limit during exercise. No other heart condition comes close as regards risk of sudden death in a young person.

John Joe

Max has declined to comment on this (maybe a sensitive issue)  :'(, but thought you may be interested.
A wee birdie told me you and him go back a long way?! Even into management!!

Seems as though the  Ex- Bellaghy manager has really gone and done
it this time   :o

Appartently one of his victims was a certain Bellaghy referee.
But then again, rumour has it, it was all a scam and Paddy Bradley now has the deeds for that particular property!!   :D

Check out the link JJ.

General discussion / Re: Bobby Sands Movie

Just out of curiosity what do people think would have happened if Bobby Sands had survived the hunger strikes, would he now be sharing the big power table with Ian Paisley, or would he have followed the path of his brother-in-law McKevitt.  Was the Strikes the catalyst for the next 20 years or so of the troubles or was that going to happen anyway. We will never know maybe there would have been another outcome.

I know he stood as an MP while on the Hunger Strike as a protest and got a huge vote, but had he a real calling to make it as a politician like Adams or McGuinness or David Irvine who turned their backs on the gun and pushed for a peaceful solution.

Bobby sands was an ordinary man who found himself in similar circumstances to hundreds of young men across the province. Living in Rathcool, he watched as his parents home was targeted time and time again for no other reason other than they were catholics. He choose, writely or wrongly to join the armed struggle against British oppression in Ireland.

I have no doubt what path Bobby sands would have choosen to take. He was a man who educated himself and hundreds of others inside the Kesh, and yearned for simple"Human Rights" for his people. Yes the conflict was about British Imperialism and  their presence in Ireland but it was about much more.
How cirmcumstances have changed that: There is no RUC, Republicans are in power sharing government, noth south institutions etc. etc..
I rekon he would have settled for today.
You only have to look what paths his 3 closest compadres took. Big Gerry, OC at the time Bic McFarlane and Jennifer McCann.

Brendan Devenney got six months for pushing Cavan ref Joe McQuillan after he was sent off against Fermanagh in 2004. If Bradley did the same, he should get the same punishment

And IF only idiots like you would stop speculating and making judgements we could move on and talk about something new.

Where did it mention anywhere that PB pushed the ref??  ???
If my memory serves me correct BD shoved the ref in the chest. The supposed allegation against PB is that he grabbed ref aroung collar region. So he didn't do the same.

Any suspension greater than a month at club level carries through to county level.
