Ballinasloe? -- are you serious -- doubt that ???

should have started the thread on Lyon's -- he is one arsehole - 2 weeks ago Derry against Kerry was a one pony team - this time - good win for Derry against Kildare - now Galway is a bridge too far again for Derry?

Keep on talking you free stater bastard

Yeah, its fixed for Ballinasloe. Was on local radio this morning. Odd move by the County Board.....pitch in Ballinasloe is a shit hole. Was in its prime back in the 70's Id say!

I've heard the game is in Ballinasloe too. Pure kip of a place, it's in a worse state than Tuam. Speaking of which, it doesn't look likely that Tuam is going to get any NFL game at all this year unless they fix the Kerry game for there which is doubtful enough really.

Ballinasloe? Well f#ck that! I was planning a bit of a session in Galway, might have to have a rethink. In all fairness Oakleafer, we beat a much weakened Galway team in Salthill last year. I was told on the day that someone close to the Meehan lads had passed away and hence neither they or Padraic Joyce played. I was a bit surprised the game was played at all, to be honest.

The last couple of years, we've always got Galway early and they've been fairly rusty; ref. cetic park in 2006. I think they are a very different proposition as the league progresses and I think we'll get it very tough.

I'm hoping for another prophetic 13 points prediction from lynchboy, but I jus dont see it coming ::)

Heard on radio a while ago the game is moved to Pearse Stadium. Anyone know where the Kerry game is fixed for yet? Salthill aswell probably, Tuam isn't going to get a game at all I'd say.

I am nearly sure DE that the Laois game was originally fixed for Tuam but changed to Salthill because the pitch was deemed unplayable that particular weekend.  Kerry game is in Salthill as far as I know.............................

It was GI but I was under the impression that one of the other league games would be brought to Tuam instead. No idea where I heard that now though, it was a long time ago. Regarding the game itself, it'll be tight i'd say. Galway are going great guns so far and were unlucky to come out of Ballybofey without a point.PJ and Mike Meehan seem to be clicking at long last. Mid field still causing problems though, Geraghty has to go, I'n no great fan of Barry Cullinane but he did well in the few games he came on as a sub and deserves a place before Geraghty though Mark Lydon is in with a good chance of making that spot his own for the summer, he did well in the few games he played before the AI final. The backs need to tighten up a bit, the scores total against us a bit worrying. I'd like to see Paul Dots given another chance in goal, Fahertys kick outs are a bit suspect and it wouldn't be any harm to give Doherty another go. All in all, we're in a fairly good position so far but a win against Derry would set things up nicely for the final stages of the league.

Oh on a totally unrelated topic, great win for our lads over Salthill today in the u-21 final. First u-21 A title for us. Shane Hughes the main man up front again with Ian Reddington getting the winning point with the last kick of the game.

Think Derry have a good chance this weekend regardless of where it is played - Niall McCusker and Kevin McCloy looked immense against Kildare and a great partnership in the making.  Anyone any ideas when Michael McGoldrick and Sean Marty are due back??

If we do win, or at least draw, it will set things up very nicely for the two derby's against Tyrone and Donegal...

Crozier should give Sean Leo McGoldrick a good run out...  He was great for us in the McKenna and has been playing great for the U21's as well scoring three from play against Fermanagh at the weekend and laying on another few as well.  Rumour has it there were scouts from Aussie rules outfit Adelaide snooping about him the other week at the Laois game as well...

On another note well done Monaghan against Dublin - good attitude forcing a good result.  Awful, but dare I say typical, behaviour from the Dublin fans after the game...  I hear that Tommy Freeman was headbutted by fans and the Monaghan team wasn't even able to warm down.  And they wonder why nobody likes them...

Galway team named:

A Faherty;
K Fitzgerald, F Hanley, D Burke;
G Sice, N Coyne, D Mullahy;
N Coleman, B Cullinane;
J Bergin, P Joyce, D Meehan;
M Clancy, M Meehan, F Breathnach.

Playing with essentially 3 midfielders, compound this with Clancy and Deccie Meehan I assume keeping the roving duties about the pitch that they have been doing prior to this match, it'll be interesting to see how the forward line works. Not enough scoring forwards there to put up the kind of score needed to beat Derry IMO. Can't see that line-up getting 15/16 scores, 10/11 scores maybe.

Will Burke last the full 70 minutes this match without getting the line?!

Welcome back An Fhairce!  For a while there we thought John Joe may have roped you into some handy county board job :P :P

Agree with you fully in relation to scoring power of the named team. Hard to see that selection getting the required amount to win the game but in fairness to Sammon he has been getting the lads to produce the goods to date so we will have to wait and judge on Sunday.

In fairness Bergin often chips in with a couple of scores when played in the half-forwards. Plus if they get a goal or two they may not need to score 15 or 16 points. They've done alright so far so let's see how they go the next day. Here's the subs anyway. They have scoring forwards to throw on if they feel they need them.

16            Paul Doherty
17            Michael Comer
18            Garry O'Donnell
19            David Finnegan
20            Alan Burke
21            Mark Lydon
22            Paul Geraghty
23            Eddie Hoare
24            Cormac Bane
25            Nicky Joyce
26            Paul Conroy
27            Damien Dunleavy
28            Sean Armstrong
29            Cathal Kenny

Sammon must see the Derry midfield as the weak point - dominate the midfield and the points will come. Unfortunately we don't really have many options in the engine room at the moment - Conway needs to step up this week. Mark lynch is another player who needs to produce the goods for Derry. Have been very disappointed by Lynch over the last 18 months - he is not doing it for Derry.

If Sammon believed the Derry midfield was so weak would he not be confident enough to just go man-to-man on the midfielders rather than crowd the area as it appears he's trying to do?

As regards the lack of genuine forwards on the Galway side, I see Nicky Joyce, Cormac Bane and Sean Armstrong are all on the bench, are they all fully fit?

Surprised to see Nicky named as a sub - thought his injuries hadn't yet cleared up. Armstrong will be close to first choice if his injuries ever clear up, especially with Sammon being a city man. Bane, much like Breathnach, isn't really the answer to anything, I'm afraid.

I think I'd categorise Sammon's reign a success if he were to win the league - believe it or not I'd prefer to win a league than a (pretty much meaningless at this stage) Connacht c'ship. It's extremely unlikely that Galway will challenge strongly for Sam in the short term, just can't see it happening.

with the team from the last day, I'd say Derry by 7
but with u21 and the couple of family members/friends weddings causing a bit of a distraction it might be tougher for Derry around Midfield for a start. Galway to pray for bad weather, a northern hating ref and a large slice of luck to win this.
When I hear more about the Derry teams state of mind I'd give a more honest prediction.

Still think Derry can win by four , comfortable but missing plenty.

I seriously doubt one Derry fan's prediction on a discussion board will be much of a concern to Liam Sammon and his players!

Lynchbhoy-   and how exactly will you be able to get a clear picture of the state of minds of the Derry players?????  Do you be having regular chats with the team psychologist or something?

you can pick up a lot of things from this board, plus from panel members back from training etc about the mindset of the personnel and mood of the camp.

Derry are in top form of the season so far, and only their lack of belief allowed them throw away a win down in Kerry.
They wont be as good the rest of the season, and have close enough to their championship team playing most games.

Form will not continue unabated until Sept, so there will be some break in the relatively near future.
It then remains to be seen what the management can do to bring them back on track - and in time to win the ulster championship or qualifiers.

if derry adopt that attitude we will never win nothing. Any player who crys off should be put on the bench in the future. Derry need to be targetting every game not tyrone - what benefit will we have in beating one team?

I agree - Derry should be trying to beat everyone every time they run out.  Paddy Heaney wrote in the Irish News a couple of weeks ago about Derry's lack of self-belief being their biggest failure as they certainly have the talent to win Ulster and mount a serious challenge for Sam - although Joe Brolly (writing in the Gaelic Life) wrote off what Paddy Heaney had said as tripe, I think there is something in it...  However i'm not so confident about the talent issue - Mark Lynch and James Conway are two obvious weak links and there are many people who doubt Conleith Gilligan's ability to cope on the big stages.  Anyone agree?

after mark lynch won the all-ireland minor medal - he and gerald o'kane where picked by the sunday examiner or tribune as 2 future stars - mark lynch as definitely not achieved his full potential - great driving runs but aimless finishing. The game against Dublin last year really demonstrated how little lynch contributed - after whelan hit him a dig - lynch did nothing and should have been substituted alot earlier. Lynch should start from the bench - he has to earn his place on the team.

Derry must, and will, persist with Lynch. The man has undoubted quality. Seen him play at Uni/minor/U-21 and senior county level and he has what it takes.
Think with all the underage football success, minor and U-21, university football, club football and hurling and county demands he should do a Gooch or Declan O'Sullivan for a chunk of next season and forget about football for a few months and get out of the country.
Looks sometimes like he needs a break.

LIVE ON TG4 & RADIO COVERAGE ON BBC RADIO ULSTER

Derry make a few changes from the side that beat Kildare.  John Deighan takes over from Barry Gillis in goals.  Francis McEldowney returns from suspension, with Niall McCusker dropping to the bench.  In the reshuffle Michael McIver moves to wing back, with Michael McBride moving to number 6.

Enda Muldoon had a fine game at midfield in the Ulster League final and he will partner his Ballinderry clubmate in the centre.  Paul Murphy come into the side at centre forward at the expense of Fergal Doherty.  In attack Eoin Bradley is retained ahead of Ciaran Mullan at corner forward.

Banagher duo Sean Marty Lockhart and Paul Cartin are back training.  Both are listed on the bench alongside Joe Diver who is also on the road to recovery.

Derry (v Galway): John Deighan, Kevin McGuckin, Kevin McCloy (Capt.), Francis McEldowney, Liam Hinphey, Michael McBride, Michael McIver, Enda Muldoon, James Conway, Mark Lynch, Paul Murphy, Barry McGoldrick, Conleith Gilligan, Patrick Bradley, Eoin Bradley.
Subs: Barry Gillis, Paul Cartin, Colin Devlin, Joe Diver, Fergal Doherty, Michael Friel, Joe Keenan, Sean M Lockhart, Enda Lynn, Niall McCusker, Ciaran Mullan, Paul O'Hea, Eunan O'Kane, Gerard O'Kane, Raymond Wilkinson.

thats far too many changes imo - unless they were enforced
that could really upset Derry's rhythm. If so then its a straight dogfight and could be a point or two either way - esp if the weather is bad.

As per Met Eireann for Sunday as it seems it will have a big bearing on the Derry gameplan  ???

Sunday will start off dry and bright. However heavy or prolonged showers will spread from the southwest during the morning and become widespread in the afternoon, some possibly thundery. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees with moderate to fresh southwest winds. The showers will continue for a time on Sunday night and then gradually die out with ground frost developing in places

Lynchbhoy-   and how exactly will you be able to get a clear picture of the state of minds of the Derry players?????  Do you be having regular chats with the team psychologist or something?
One Derry fan?? Cmon! After LB's prediction, the last time against Kildare, he should change his name to the oracle ;)

Gaway where the better team - we should have been beaen by more. Mid field was non-existent - thats right key element in bellaghy with hang over 8)

Full back line roasted - mcloy and mcguckian - why does paddy crozier persist with that balloon francie mceldowney?......he is no county player. Diver and gerlad o'kane should have been on earlier. Murphy did nothing. Did paddy bradley go to the wedding too? -- never seen him the whole match. Deeks was the only player in the forward line who tried.

Derry yet again showed that when PB is kept quiet, the whole team is kept quiet. I never realistically expected to come out of Pearse stadium with 2 points, but the manner of the defeat is notable. Too many schoolboy errors. How many times did we kick the ball straight to the opposition? How many times did we drop the ball into the keepers arms? We couldn't buy a ball in the middle!!

Think you're bein sore on Twin, he certainly made some mistakes, but he wasn't on his own by any means. He, at least showed a bit of fight and passion. Skinner took the wrong option several times, but at least he was converting some of them. I'd have taken Paddy off before Eoin.

The soft penalty doesn't take away the fact that Galway were the better side, they were denied possibly a more valid one later on and young Deighan couldn't do anything about the 2nd 2 goals, defence all over the place. Once galway ran at them, they had no cohesion, it was panic stations. No doubt, we missed Doc in a big way.

The long haired foward is Matthew Clancy and he's been Derry's downfall before. (painful memeories of 2001 aisf). In fairness Joyce might have taken 5 or even 6 steps, but not as many as 12.

A decent display from Galway yesterday, didnt have to be particularly brilliant as Derry seemed to have left the recent good form at home.  That young Derry keeper certainly kept them in the game in the first half and some of his saves were top class.  From a Galway perspective the most encouraging aspects of yesterdays game was the displays of the backs as a unit and the performance of Big Barry at midfield.  His best game in a senior jersey yet and he really dominated his patch yesterday.  Sammon certainly has Galway playing a very good brand of football that seems to be suiting the players that he currently has at his disposal and hopefully that bodes well for the more sterner tests that lie ahead.

Good analysis there. Even with Fergal Doc back we need to find a partner for him. We were completely clened out in the middle of the field. Maybe Diver could do a job there but he needs to get his temprament sorted out. Gerard O'Kane looked good when he came on. Let's hope he stays injury free. Murphy and Paddy Bradley were very quiet. Deets was shaky in the first half but turned it around in the second.

I'm not convinced about Kevin Mc Guckian. I saw him getting a couple of roastings in club football last year, never mind inter-county. Against Glenullin in the county semi he was non-existent. Liam Hinphey didn't look county material on yesterday's performance.

I still think Derry have enough talent to challenge for an All-Ireland but we need another mid-fielder, Gerard O'Kane and Micky Mc Goldrick back in defence, and all of the forwards playing up to scratch.

Galway easily achieve their goals
KEITH DUGGAN at Pearse Stadium

Galway 3-9 Derry 0-13:  GALWAY DISPOSED of Derry with a smouldering, attacking performance that may have been their most complete exhibition of teamwork to date. Liam Sammon's men are breathing hard on a place in the league final while Derry, after a bright spring beginning, were taken to school here.

Paddy Crozier could have filled plenty of foolscap pages on the long coach ride back to the Oak Leaf county last night and, as he stood in the mild drizzle of Salthill, the visiting boss acknowledged that his team had been overrun where it mattered.

"We scored 13 times, Galway scored 12 times," he mused.

Goals count.

And how. But for the feline dexterity of the Limavady goalkeeper, John Deighan, Derry could have coughed up half a dozen goals here. The signs were ominous from the first minute when he somehow managed to get a paw on to Joe Bergin's low shot through traffic. After 26 minutes, Matthew Clancy was played through for a one-on-one chance by Micheál Meehan and blasted a shot that Deighan deflected over the bar.

Two minute later, he got his hands to Gary Sice's hammered effort. On 53 minutes, the Derry man denied Michael Meehan.

These were fine, reflex saves.

But there was no stopping the Galway goals. In the 17th minute, Fiachra Breathnach was hauled to the turf after a swift Galway counter attack and Meehan's penalty was perfect, hit low and with too much velocity to stop.

Pádraic Joyce's goal belongs to his lengthy inventory of outrageous scores. Again, it emanated from Meehan's clever assist pass. The Killererin man feinted to shoot right, turned on a dime and fired a brilliant left-foot shot to thrill the local crowd.

That left the score at 2-6 to 0-6 after 47 minutes.

And although Derry grimly stuck to the notion of taking something from the match, Galway always looked likely to conjure another big score. From the moment Liam Hinphey undercooked a pass out of defence, you could see the Galway attacking men align themselves for the incoming ball. This time, it was Nickey Joyce who played the ball for Matthew Clancy, who took it at speed and at the perfect angle.

Derry fans know all about Clancy and goals and the loyal travellers must have seen flashes of the All-Ireland semi-final of 2001 as Clancy delivered a cool and deadly finish across the face of the goal before wheeling away in celebration. "They could have scored another two or three only for John Deighan," nodded Crozier.

It was entirely appropriate that Clancy was the player to finish off that move. It would be interesting to clock the mileage that the Oughterard man clocks up in a match. He roved between the two half-back lines, working his socks off with no apparent fatigue.

He is flourishing under Sammon's creative reign and, along with Barry Cullinane, who was like a wrecking ball at midfield, Sice, Finian Hanley and Kieran Fitzgerald, he had an outstanding match. It must have pleased Sammon that Galway could post a significant score without any contribution from play from Meehan and with Joyce, the flamboyant strike aside, fairly subdued.

The return of Joe Bergin, with his play-anywhere facility, greatly deepens the options from Galway, with the tall man bouncing from forward to midfield. Equally, they could drop Declan Meehan from half forward to his customary half-back slot when the need arose.

Galway's smoothness around the field illuminated the troubles of the Northern men. From the beginning, they struggled to cope with the uninhibited attacking instinct of the Galway half-backs, Sice and Darren Mullahy.

Both teams engaged in cagey opening tactics. Derry landed some impressive Howitzer points from outlandish distance in the first 15 minutes. But that was partly because they had no option otherwise.

They could not get Paddy Bradley into the game and he finished without a score. Galway didn't concede a score from a free until the 17th minute and they never gave the visitors a chance to get comfortable on the ball. Loose passes were punished more often than not and Galway treated every minor tussle for possession as an important battle.

One sequence of play saw Bergin sprinting hard to close down Mark Lynch's run along the sideline and he threw a long arm at the football to force a sideline ball. It was a small moment that magnified the fact that right now Galway want to chase everything.

"We knew that this would be difficult, that it would be sort of championship for us," said Sammon. "And we asked everyone to give that extra little bit. In particular, I am pleased that we didn't concede a goal because we have been conceding two goals a game. I thought the six backs were outstanding. They manfully stuck to their task."

Derry's refusal to throw in the towel on a frustrating day was notable. Even after Clancy had sacked Derry for the third time, they responded with two points.

Conleth Gilligan tried to make things happen in the second half and they missed the influence of Fergal Doherty badly. They can chalk it up as one of those away days.

GALWAY: A Flaherty; D Burke, F Hanley, K Fitzgerald; G Sice, N Coyne, D Mullahy; N Coleman (0-1), B Cullinane; D Meehan, P Joyce (1-1), J Bergin (0-1); M Clancy (1-2), M Meehan (1-3, pen free), F Breathnach (0-1). Subs: S Armstrong for Breathnach (34 mins), D Dunleavy for N Coleman (41 mins), N Joyce for N Coyne (53 mins); C Bane for M Clancy (65 mins), M Clancy for S Armstrong (66 mins).

DERRY: J Deighan; K McGuckin, K McCloy, F McEldowney; L Hinphey, M McBride, M McIvor; E Muldoon (0-2), J Conway (0-2); M Lynch (0-2), P Murphy, B McGoldrick; C Gilligan (0-3, 2 frees), P Bradley, E Bradley (0-2). Subs: M Friel for P Murphy (half-time), C Devlin for E Bradley (54 mins inj.), G O Kane (0-1) for McBride (54 mins), J Diver (0-1) for M Friel (64 mins), J Keenan for M McIvor (69 mins).

On the positive side, Derry played so poorly and still were only beaten by the goals - def there is vast room for improvement and I would like to think this sets them up for better run into the latter end of the league after getting their heads well and truely grounded.
I'd be hoping for similar if I was a galwayman - that they have players to come back into the team - as Derry were rubbish on Sun, so not to get too carried away either!

well on that premise alone Barton is a runner for the gig

Crozier had nothing on his CV to get him the job
Barton if anything is now overqualified. Dont think Sean Boylan had any county titles under his belt in Meath club management before he took the helm either.
Its not an absolute pre-requisite.
Just voicing my opinion, based on something I heard a while ago.
I think Barton is being strongly considered if what I heard is true!

as you know from before crozier got the job, I was against it.
I would think that the Boylans of this world are one off's and a track record of progression would be something any county board would desire.
but Derry county board work in some f**king mysterious ways.

Interesting how the Derry boys are going to get a new manager in to replace Crozier, based on yesterday's (admittedly gutless and inept) performance.

However IMHO there is no-one who would do a better job. Barton has done nothing to warrant mention, yet he is still a much better option than Cassidy would be (who has done even less).

One thing for sure though, you would need to hold on to your multi-millionaire, racing horse owning, Ferrari driving county chairman, because neither of those two boyos would come cheap.

I know you're not usually one for getting the facts wrong SS2 but as far as I am aware Cassidy has won a County Senior Cship, took a relatively limited team to within touching distance of a second and also won a Tyrone U21 cship with Loughmacrory... Has Barton won anything apart from an All Ireland 7s?

I thought Cassidy had won more than that - also think you are doing that team a bit of a dis-service, they were not that 'limited' in my estimation - had a nice/perfect mix of skill and toughness, plus grit and doggedness.

SS2 - well the county board saved anough by appointing Paddy C to enable them to shell out for either of them or some other big money manager. rumour is they approached a BIG guy who wouldnt take the drive north from his border based home near county louth - so apparantly Barton has been tapped up already as a successor to PC.
Cassidy has gone off the scene altogether, did he take that job in Tyrone , thats the last I heard mention of him.
Although he has been hard at it for a few years and prob needed time out to recharge (and spend all that money!)

Ah now, I was only mentioning Barton in his playing capacity, not managerial! I've seen him a few times along the line and I must say I'm not convinced. Cassidy is probably a better option. Still PC isn't doing a bad job now, but this year will his acid test. The "young up and coming team" line has to be a thing of the past from here on.

Poor performance but Fergal Doherty will make a huge difference when he comes back, the big No.9 Cullinane wouldn't have won so much in the middle if Doherty was there.  PB was anonymous but that doesn't happen very often and with a good few boys still to come back and plenty of room for improvement from the likes of McCloy and McGuckin I wouldn't be all that despondent, given that Derry only finished up losing by 5 to a good side after a below-par display.

Doherty would have made a big difference to the mid field - if he had played on sunday. It was in the mid field and the full backline that our problems emerged. Although PB was kept quiet we still managed to score 13 points. On the point of PB - i would have swapped him with collie Devlin rather than Eoin. (although - I think eoin got injuried in the game?).
If the full backs gets their act together - we should be ok against tyrone. Hopefully, big niall mccusker is back. Francie Mceldowney should confined to the bench. Gerald O' kane should start for definite?

Gerard O' Kane and Joe Diver looked good when they came on and will really make a difference come championship time. Mickey Mc Goldrick might be back as well, which will be a big bonus. Lockhart will also be available. I can't see Paul Murphy being as bad again; likewise Paddy Bradley. Eoin Bradley is ok, just a bit of bruising. He'll be availbable for the match this weekend.

All in all I'm pretty happy about the squad. However I hope we get the returnees settled into the side fairly quickly and get better performances from the frontmen. I think all our troubles against Galway came from getting cleaned out at midfield. Fergal Doc is a big part of the solution there but we need someone else who can win some ball, to partner him. Maybe Diver if he settles himself. Patsy Bradley is also back training although he's a bit away from playing yet (with his arm injury).
