No....

Sammy Wilson is.

No, Nelson McCausland....he doesn't even try to hide his bigotry.
For what it's worth, I think Poots is just incompetent.
And as far as Wilson goes, I actually think he's not too bad.

McCausland is terrible. His soul aim is to keep North Belfast Westminster seat DUP and he'll use any means of corruption to do that.

Conor Murphy was also useless. And your one Ruane, what a halfwit!

In fact I think the majority of the exec is incompetent.

Biggest laugh of all was when Samy Wilson accused the Green Party's Steven Agnew of having a poor grasp of Economics during a debate. Agnew then reminded Sammy that he was his Economics teacher at Grammar School back in the day! ;D

pootsie is in the spotlight alright. thats what happens when you challange 'grey power'. but if he thinks the pressure hes under now because of the proposed closure of old folks homes is bad just wait until a baby from norn iron is left lying on a filthy trolley in dublin when its needs an operation. he'll be tarred and feathered.

Michelle Gildernew & Michelle O'Neill deserve mention for their terms as Minister for Agriculture, McCausland doesent seem too clued in on the welfare reform any time he has been interviewed, it isn't exactly a dynamic bunch up on the hill though.

They're all feckin' useless if you ask me! But wee Sammy did say that man-made global warming was a load of bollix, so at least he has a few braincells upstairs. He's still useless though.

I actually disagree with most on here.

Poots is a smart man and has a very difficult portfolio. He is not afraid to tackle issues head on, and there is no easy answer to continued budget reduction. Plus I think he is much less bigotted than his cohorts.

in fairness to gildernew the system that ran up the bill was already in place when she took over and her dept just kept doing what they had been doing. rules that were in place that really related to italy where the fraud was rampant were applied to all and sundry and we came up on the losing side. you'll agreed what has happened since regarding maps/sfp/intitlements etc is far more punitive than when gildernew was in charge. i thought she did well during the toxins scandal when her southern sliveen counterpart didnt even bother to inform her that poisin was in the foodchain but then it was only nordies who'd be eating it.

there are no patients on trollies in the hse system? is that you mary harney? or are you james reilly? ffs emergency 999s cant get a fukn ambulance! a month ago a stab victom bleeding to death lay in the snow in central dublin for 40mins while dozens of people standing beside him phoned frantically for help. EMERGENCY ambulances have to queue at hospitals because they cant get their trollies back because the patients are left laying on them and they cant go back on the road without trollies. (maybe they could use pallets then they could stack the patients up)  your "health service" is the worst in the EC after greece and the pharaceutical companies that ireland depends on for work rip the arse out of the HSE/taxpayer in drug prices. its cheaper to buy the stuff over the counter in spain. yeah if pootsie sends sick kids into that system then he truely is the worst minister ever

A few choice quotes:
He also pointed out that there had previously been 14 emergency ambulances in Belfast, but now there were seven.

At one stage, in the Ulster Hospital, I'm told that five or six vehicles were queued up waiting to bring patients inside

They were left standing with patients who had called an emergency vehicle so obviously they were ill, they said the situation was particularly tense and it was embarrassing as some patients were trying to help them to help other patients.

Ten of those patients, according to the figures I have, had to wait for up to three hours and two waited for more than three hours in the care of our paramedics.

In Poots defence, he is less partitionist than Lawnseed.

QuoteMichelle Gildernew & Michelle O'Neill deserve mention for their terms as Minister for Agriculture,

I think Gildernew made a reasonable effort, the less said about her successor the better.

Never seen as much nonsense over a non story....."evicting elderly" etc politicians are a law unto themselves. If all the trusts residential homes closed it involved just over 300 people in total....and they would all be placed in facilities that would provide a better service than they are currently getting. The tubes at Stormont had no problem funding 20million to "police" the flags protest....but when it comes to health.....we have no money!! Absolute wankers the lot of them!

Are you having a laugh? Want patients on trollies? Want ambulances queued up outside an A&E department? No need for any cross border travel - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-21585145

Ten of those patients, according to the figures I have, had to wait for up to three hours and two waited for more than three hours in the care of our paramedics.

taking sick people out of one shithole and moving them 90mile to a bigger shit hole isnt an answer to any problem. i'm not trying to be partitionist or anything political or otherwise. i'm stating a fact. lift any newspaper in the country and there are nightmarish scandalous stories about the poor treatment of patients in the HSE. WHY OH WHY????? would anyone want to go where the system is failing?? what would be the point??? would you head to calcutta or north vietnam why not?

We use kilometres not miles.
ok! why oh why would anyone want to join the kilometre long queue for treatment in a third world health system 120kms from where they live when there is a perfectly good 2/3mls queue right beside them

the issue is the real wealth of a country is evident in its level of healthcare. the healthcare available on this island reflects the level of  investment put in by the administrations/governments responsible.
the proposal to shift cardiac patients from belfast to dublin where they will in effect become private 'queue jumping' patients ie they will take priority over southern patients national health patients already in the system. this is wrong. the proposal stems from the lack of use of these facilites in belfast the obvious solution is for belfast to take patients from the HSE waiting list. the reason o reilly is keen is because once the belfast facility is closed he can rip the arse out of the various trusts in nordieland like hes trying to do with private health insurances and the gimp kenny can give the money to germany

Do you have the same problem with cancer patients from the 26 counties being treated in Altnagelvin?

Hmmm.... maybe because one kilometer is a lot shorter than 2-3 miles?

Anyway, the fact that you think the healthcare system north or south is 'third world' shows just how far you are removed from reality.

How is that the solution? Will that not result in HSE patients jumping the queue over NHS patients? And how far do sick babies have to travel from Cork, Kerry, Waterford etc?

If one unit on the Ireland is the answer, then it makes sense to position it as centrally as possible, relative to the population.

What about Northern Ireland?

The total number of people waiting for a first outpatient appointment at the end of December 2012 was 107,216.

The total number of patients waiting for inpatient treatment at the end of December 2012 was 51,211.

I actually disagree with most on here.

Poots is a smart man and has a very difficult portfolio. He is not afraid to tackle issues head on, and there is no easy answer to continued budget reduction. Plus I think he is much less bigotted than his cohorts.
Not sure I could agree with that. He failed in 2 previous Departments due to his inability to act strategically DOE over Review of Public Administration the issue being that he wanted to go against the Boundary Commissioner over which parts of Castlereagh should go to Lisburn and in DCAL over the Maze Long Kesh issue. Promoted  above his ability if you ask me

The total number of patients waiting for inpatient treatment at the end of December 2012 was 51,211.

those figures dont refer to those waiting to see 'consultants'. cant think of any reason why you bothered to search them. try to imagine fellas on about 300 thousand a year.. not someone waiting to get their corns done by the nurse
Well can you provide more comparable figures? Because unless you can, your figure means very little.
103000 thousand means very little.. is that you reilly?
I take it that's a No then?

more calls for "dr" Reilly to resign as another tot dies with no 999 ambulance to pick him up. a gaa star did his best to get him to hospital but he died in hospital despite his best efforts. Reilly says the hse will 'investigate itself' so hes safe for now. very sad for this kids parents the child would have been 2years old today. an yet more embarrassment for the country as his parents are non nationals so you can guess the headlines where they're from. brutal stuff absolutely brutal. god help us and keep our children safe.

When I replied previously I was on my phone and unable to read the details of the 107,216 number. For clarification:

This publication presents information on waiting times for a first outpatient assessment in Northern Ireland at 31st December 2012. It details information on the number of patients waiting, and length of time waiting, for a first appointment at a consultant led outpatient service and Integrated Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services (ICATS) at Health and Social Care (HSC) Trusts in Northern Ireland.

my figure doesn't include outpatients...
how many kids have died as a result of not getting an ambulance? your trying to defend the indefensible. the health service in the 26 is a disaster and that's from the people who live there and from myself who also lived there. I've been in the louth and monaghan and drogheda hospitals they are shitholes, dirty stinking shitholes. and Ive been in several dublin dives also equally as shitty and filthy. the hse is so good i cant even get an appointment at my nordie doctor because hes bunged out with southern patients paying cash.

You really know how to undermine a genuinely awful story by adding in your own rubbish.

Assuming you're referring to the child who died in Cork...
They were never told the ambulance was coming: former Cork hurler Kevin Hennessy said he telephoned for an ambulance after arriving at the scene of the incident. He was told over the phone that no ambulance was available in the area at that time

They weren't stopped by the Gardai: He telephoned gardaí who provided him with an escort.

Judge rules gay blood ban 'irrational'

The ban on gay men giving blood in Northern Ireland is irrational, a High Court judge has ruled - adding that Health Minister Edwin Poots broke the ministerial code over the issue.

Mr Justice Treacy held that the DUP minister breached the ministerial code by failing to take the issue before the Northern Ireland Executive.

The verdict on gay blood donation, in a challenge brought by an unidentified homosexual man, represents a major victory for campaigners seeking equal status with the rest of the UK.

The complete prohibition - put in place during the 1980s AIDS threat - was lifted in England, Scotland and Wales in November 2011.

It was replaced by new rules which allow blood from men whose last sexual contact with another man was more than a year ago. The 12-month deferral was left in place following a Government Advisory Committee report.

It identified a much shorter period during which infection with blood-borne viruses could not be detected.

Mr Poots maintained the ban in Northern Ireland on the grounds of ensuring public safety.

But a gay man, granted anonymity due to his perceived vulnerability, launched a judicial review challenge to Mr Poots' position.

Applying different standards to imported blood defeats the whole purpose of a permanent deferral.

Mr Justice Treacy heard claims that the Minister had displayed apparent bias which went beyond religious beliefs and into the realms of prejudice.

It was revealed in court that, despite the unidentified applicant's sexual orientation, he has become a born-again Christian who now disapproves of homosexual practices.

Attorney General John Larkin QC, the chief legal adviser to the Stormont Executive, questioned the legitimacy of the challenge.

He claimed it was a waste of time because the applicant had previously had sex for money.

Mr Larkin rejected arguments that the issue required full Executive approval and questioned whether the Minister had made a decision to maintain the current ban.

However, Mr Justice Treacy pointed out that in continuing the lifetime deferral policy the Minister had deviated from the position taken in England, Scotland and Wales.

He said the decision was made against the Secretary of State's recommendation that the report from the advisory committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs (SaBTO) should be followed.

The judge held that the additional risk from deferring donation for 12 months instead of permanently was very minimal.

He said: "The Minister has decided that MSM (males who have sex with other males) behaviour creates such a high risk of infection to the donor that such donors must be permanently deferred, with the result that such blood cannot enter the Northern Ireland blood stock.

"Importing blood from other places which do accept MSM donors, even in limited quantities, leaves the door open for MSM blood to do just that.

"There is clearly a defect in reason here."

Declaring the decision irrational, he said: "If there is a genuine concern about the safety of MSM donated blood such that the blood stock must be protected absolutely from such blood, then the security of that blood must actually be maintained absolutely."

The Minister is aware of the judgement document and will read and consider it.

Dealing with the alleged breach of the Ministerial Code, Mr Justice Treacy said the lifetime ban was both controversial and cross-cutting, taking in equality issues.

"As such, the Minister had no authority to act without bringing them to the attention of the Executive Committee - which he failed to do.

"In doing so the Minister breached the Ministerial Code and had no legal authority to take a decision."

A Health Department spokesperson said the Minister "is aware of the judgement document and will read and consider it".

Reacting to the ruling, John O'Doherty from the Rainbow Project said that Mr Poot's decision to keep the ban in place had outraged many in Northern Ireland.

"This ruling is a shocking indictment of the conduct of Minister Poots, who has proven himself incapable of separating his personal prejudices from his public responsibilities," he said.

"This case, coupled with the adoption case, show that Minister Poots has continually wasted public money defending the indefensible and has absolutely nothing to show for it."

Mr O'Doherty added that the organisation he represents was now looking forward to the overturning of this unreasonable ban and ending this farce once and for all".

Any thoughts on big Pootsy wanting to charge all drinkers for their excursions into A&E if their excesses have led to them being there?

I know these religious types don't partake in the devils urine, but what if you accidentally dropped one of those big bibles on your foot, should you be charged as well?

Where would you stop?

Load of dung. Drinking is legal Pootsy so where does it all end - partaking in dangerous sports? Eating too much? Do the taxes from alcohol sales etc. not already going into the coffers for the "free" NHS.

If drunks accounted for 80% of the costs of running an A&E then I would consider his idea. Otherwise it would indeed be difficult to manage the qualification process.

Plus the fact it's the people who can't afford to pay for their healthcare who are those most affected by the afflictions of drink and drugs... stupid statement!
