Title: Sigerson Cup 2011 - live scores
Post by: GAA_Punter on February 16, 2011, 08:34:34 AM
The Sigerson Cup draw has again thrown up some very interesting first round games.

As always, a couple of shocks are on the cards in the early rounds, as teams will be motivated by the fact that a win on Thursday will qualify them for the showpiece Sigerson Cup Weekend at Belfield on the first weekend in March. (Unfortunately, the final of the competition has also been confirmed as being in Belfield, despite an offer from GAA President Christy Cooney to make Croke Park available for the Centenary Sigerson Cup Final this weekend).

On the field, the meetings between University of Ulster, Jordanstown and Cork IT, St. Mary's Belfast and DCU and NUI Maynooth and Queens University are billed as the ties of the round, while the meeting of IT Dublin and University of Limerick is sure to attract plenty of attention with a certain Kerry man set to begin his studies, and restart his Sigerson Cup career at Grangegorman.

University of Ulster Jordanstown against Cork IT, the tie of the round in many people eyes, brings face to face the competition winners of 2009 and 2008. Few will be brave enough to make a definitive call on the game; this one could require extra time, with the winners sure to be a force to be reckoned with at the weekend.

Last year's winners DCU host St. Mary's University College, and after a 2-13 to 2-12 Ryan Cup victory for the hosts earlier in the year, will know that they will need to be on top of their game to stop the Belfast outfit causing an upset. Encouraging performances in the Dr. McKenna Cup, especially against Armagh, will have instilled confidence in St. Marys, and DCU's early exit, losing comprehensively to Kildare, will not have helped preparations for the Glasnevin outfit, who normally take the competition seriously as preparation for Sigerson.

NUI Maynooth will hope for a repeat of their giant killing exploits of last years campaign, when then they caused the shock of the competition by beating UUJ at this stage. Another Ulster powerhouse make the trip South this week, with Queens University the opposition. Not being able to partake i.............

That UUJ/CIT score is a bit of a shock is it not? I'm not saying CIT would have been expected to win it but I would have thought it would be close. Have CIT lost that many players?

And UL beat DIT???????????? I thought they were favourites and UL were hammered in the league by both UCC and CIT were they not?

Confirmed, UL win by 2. I can't believe it but I'm delighted for the boys.

O'Neill was involved with the Kildare minors last year. Is he still with the Tipp hurlers as well?

Popped over to the Maynooth match. Good result for them. I saw Tom Cribbin at it AZ. Don't know if there was any Offaly lads involved?

He was with the Tipp Hurlers last year anyway, did great work with them, they're mad about him.

Not sure if there's any Offaly lads in Maynooth, have you a teamsheet?

He's still with the Tipp hurlers alright but I know he was thinking of stepping down from the UL coaching role over the past two years.

I only really recognised the few Kildare lads playing.

QUB were a bit of a disappointment considering how strong they were a few years back.

Was at the IT Sligo v NUIG game, great 1st half but sending off ruined it, NUIG are  good outfit though. IT werent clinical enough in front of goal tbh, and id say NUIG were always going to win despite losing the midfield battle. Some very poor performances by county players in this game.

Parsons roasted gilmartin, coen looked out of form, cummins for all his pace and strength lacked scoring potential, croal average enough, garvey anonomus, though douglas and doherty were disappointing for all there pace and space creation they dont punish defenders enough like cummins and croal should of all had a field day today considering the ball they got in great postions... dillon and gardner very good though imo.. thought sweeney did good for IT. A mixture r&gs, but not bad from a mayo point of view, was standing behind maughan whole game, when the game was tight not  word out of him, when nuig were pulling away he was roaring his head off, wearing his tight tank top, the rossies would be amused for sure. The mans body language isnt endearing...

Cheers for that. Tom Parsons looked against Down like a player with a point to prove. Lets hope he keeps it up. Dillon and Gardiner are what the English soccer commentators would call 'great pro's'. You will always get everything out of them and they are great men to have on your side. Douglas and Doherty both have potential. I guess we'll have to see how they develop during the league. Have heard many comments in recent months that the Sigerson was quickly being devalued as the likes of DCU, DIT and UUJ were out pulling in county players through these sports bursary awards.
That's why I was particularly delighted to see UL beating DIT.

Is that true? EVERY college has scholarships? I really don't think that's the case. When I say scholarships I mean the kind where they reduce points to get fellas in, usually fellas who have nowhere near the points asked. As far as I am aware DCU, DIT and UUJ do this which is very unfair. I was involved in IT Sligo and we had nothing like this.

FFS, when I was at Queen's Sligi IT were the biggest cheats in the sigerson cup, sure you had boys playing who werent even at your college and that is not even counting your carpenters and bricklayers. It was your college and the other ITs that caused all the problems.

FFS, when I was at Queen's Sligi IT were the biggest cheats in the sigerson cup, sure you had boys playing who werent even at your college and that is not even counting your carpenters and bricklayers. It was your college and the other ITs that caused all the problems.

Totally agree. That was slightly after my IT Sligo days. They ripped the piss big style much to my annoyance. I know for cert they had lads in a Sigerson final (1 Roscommon, 1 Donegal and 1 Sligo) who were illegal.
My point now is that DCU, DIT and UUJ are all ripping the piss, offering all sorts of blind incentives to young lads who would be better off trying to get a course that will get them a job!

CK :let me put it on the record that no one absolutely no one gets into UUJ with out the proper grades. Don't know what sort of system you operate in the south but if you do not have the grades in the north you do not get in.  The GAA are the largest club in UU but they have no influence on entrance. I agree most young people want courses that they can get jobs thats why they are going to UU. A large range of great courses and professional post grads that are populated by students north and south. One of the few places you can actually study physiotherapy. sports studies, quantity surveying one of the best engineering, business studies and accountancy faculties in the EU.  You tend to forget that in the north students and parents are paying massive fees, soon to be greatly increased.  It is an insult to suggest that would waste money going on a course they do not want to do. Jordanstown is the University of choice for most gaelic players because of the sporting and academic excellence. There are NO incentives given to any undergraduate from the GAA in UU.  There are four post grad bursaries awarded by the University if you are lucky and all post grads must have at least a 2:1
By the way have a good look at the queens post grads over the last number of years. Advanced Computer Science!!. People in glass houses should not throw stones.

A quick google search will show that you are talking out yir backside! So what are these "Elite athlete entry schemes" at Jordanstown then? Schemes that allow students gain access to courses they may not be able to access in normal circumstances. Elite athletes can get points for sporting prowess! which are added to their leaving cert scores.
As for UU being the University of choice for gaelic footballers? Get over yourself! I work with minor players in Sligo and most of them would never even have heard of Jordanstown. You should not believe your own hype.
As for you telling us how great UU is with all its great courses. No-one is arguing with ya... although thou protest too much me thinks.

CK: Great you got a reality check. you started of pontificating about incentives and bursaries. Elite Athlete schemes are totally different and colleges from waterford to magee have them in place. Why shouldn't GAA players male and female be rewarded for their sport.  Hockey, Rugby, Soccer have been doing it for years. We are no longer second class citizens. My main point ,which you totally ignore is that queens throw shit at every other college in Ireland and of course Johnstown in order to camouflage what they have been up to for years.
By the way  Conor Davey, potential full back for Sligo is a first year at UUJ and I believe the Sigo County coaching officer is also a graduate. The gospel is spreading.
Anyway enough of this nonsense, hope the sigerson weekend back to the 3 days is a feast of football- no further comment

Oh right, so one second you are saying that no-one gets in without the right grades and now you are saying that they can get in with lesser grades? Mmmm Then you change tact and hide behind the fact that other sports are doing it. Cut the crap. Jordanstown have been at it for years and everyone knows it. Your lies are just making you look stupid.

Your defence of UU is pathetic especially given that a previous comment of yours is as follows: "FFS, when I was at Queen's Sligi IT were the biggest cheats in the sigerson cup"
So you were also at Queen's? ...but you have slagged them off above. Jesus, I'm confused. I'm coming to the conclusion that you sir are just full of shite! A bit like your defence of cheating the HE system which has degraded the sigerson for years. I believe in fair play and when all this reduction of points came in to get players courses I just got disillusioned with the whole thing, unlike your good self who just blames everyone else.

As for the "gospel is spreading". I don't know whether to laugh or cry. The gospel according to who?! Unfortunately it's this gospel crap being spouted by UUJ, DCU and DIT who are leading young lads astray.

You finish by saying No further comment. Comment away as long as there is no further bullshit!

No sour grapes at all bud. I'm sure their facilities etc are a credit to them. I only have isssue with those who stretch the eligibility rules, and those who attempt to defend it.

Q. What do you get when you drive quickly through the poly campus?

A. An undergraduate degree.

Q. What does a poly student call a Queens student after graduation?

A. Boss.

Q. Did you hear that the library at Jordanstown burned down?

A. Naturally, the students were very upset. Some of the books weren't coloured in yet.

Q. Why do poly graduates put a copy of their diploma in the window of their vehicles?

A. So they can park in handicap spaces.

I'll tell you what you nordys know how to do it alright.
Stronghold, for a man who claimed to have gone to Queen's you are fierce uptight about your beloved polytechnic when someone adds a joke to the page. You sound like a man who has an inferiority complex who is obssesed with Queen's! No-one even mentioned Queen's till you nearly broke into tears about them.

Let young lads pick the college they want, let them gain entry on merit and let them get an education first and football second.

If you are an example of the product from Sligo IT, I doubt very much if there will be many students rushing to enter there, but then of course you have probably graduated as a plumber or a joiner, don't think you would have the ability to be an electician.

For anyone that has any interest you can get a look at the final eight teams squads here - http://www.he.gaa.ie/ulster-bank-sigerson-cup-preview.

Over the Fitzgibbon Cup weekend last week there was constant video clips put up and regular score updates on Gaa Higher Education Facebook Page as well as a daily round-up. Not many people know the site exists so spread the word to anyone that has an interest. The videos are well worth logging on for!

Having looked through the panels i have to say i fancy a few euro on U.L. They seem to have a big strong team with plenty of good footballers. From memory the 2 Tipp lads in the forwards are decent players along with the Kerry lads and Niblock from Cork. D.C.U look very strong but U.L. have already beaten D.I.T. who were second favourites so at 8/1 might go with them.

Been at the same crack myself, comparing the panels and while its hard to look by DCUs forward line I feel that Jordanstown may have the backline to sniff them out. Throw in Mc Manus and Clarke in the forwards and I think they may take stopping. 5/2 looks decent as I expect them to make the final and then its as good as 50/50.

DCU out in Sigerson shock

03 March 2011

Holders and hot favourites DCU have been knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Sigerson Cup this afternoon.

The north Dublin college met UCC in a repeat of the 2010 final, which they won by a five-point margin.

However, the Munster men exacted their revenge in a dramatic encounter at UCD Belfield this afternoon (Thursday), with a goal ten minutes from the end proving the decisive score in a 1-12 to 0-14 victory.

DCU and DIT had started the year vying for Sigerson favouritism but neither side will be on show in Friday's semi-finals, DIT having been dumped out by the University of Limerick two weeks ago.

UL's hopes of building on that victory were dashed by surprise packages NUI Maynooth today, with the Co Kildare college reaching the semi-finals for the second successive year.

Maynooth trailed by one at the break (1-1 to 0-3) but held off-colour UL to a single point thereafter to run out 0-9 to 1-2 winners at the final whistle.

Maynooth, who reached the last four on home soil last year, will face Ulster University Jordanstown in the semi-finals on Friday after UUJ's impressive defeat of IT Carlow.

UUJ had 13 points to spare over Cork IT in the first round and managed to eclipse that winning margin this time with a 2-19 to 1-8 victory.

They led by five at the interval (1-10 to 1-5) and extended their lead throughout the second half against an outclassed IT Carlow collective.

UUJ's goals came from Conor McManus and Jason McAnulla, with Craig Rogers responding from the penalty spot for Carlow.

Quarter-final day finishes with the meeting of NUI Galway and hosts UCD at 5 o'clock.

Thursday's Sigerson Cup quarter-final results:

UUJ 2-19 IT Carlow 1-8
NUI Maynooth 0-9 UL 1-2
UCC 1-12 DCU 0-14

Not sure it's that big of a shock. They were awful in the O'Byrne Cup when I saw them. UCC would have a good team - Daithi Casey, Johnny Buckley, Barry O'Driscoll, Adrian Greaney, Seamus Hanafin and would have Billy Morgan over them.

Looks there for the taking for UCD now even without Peter Kelly.

Well Kildare should have no problem beating any sigerson cup team but i suppose your right didn't DCU win the O'Byrne cup last year

Would fancy a UCC v UUJ final now.

Football club still go by UCG, although officially they are not allowed to.  You won't hear one player on the pitch shouting "c'mon NUIG".
I was a bit premature with the HT score.

Well it's easier to shout UCG & most of the players on todays team would be only 7/8 when they had the name change so fair play to them for keeping the traditions.

No. No Donie Shine either. DCU missed at least 3 goal chances with one cleared off the line and one off the post.

UCD were impressive enough but NUIG didn't put up much resistance, they were very poor. Young Heaslin from Westmeath kicked 3 good points from play.

Kelly didnt play for Sligo as he is injured so must still be out, the no14 looked awful like shine but isnt.. in that clip the ball looked over the line, there was on the left hand post umpire who put up his hand but on the right hand post theres a young fella with a bib on standing 5 yards from the post, the fella closest to the left hand post puts his hand up as if to signal something butwasnt close to the post either, NO 14 clear tells ref something but ref just ignores, looks like bad organisation either way imo.

Murphy kicked two points in the first few minutes but was kept quiet enough after that. He was probably fortunate to not get sent off, got booked in the first half and fouled another 5/6 times after that. He made a great catch from a high ball in towards the end to set up the goal chance which hit the post.

Cathal Cregg played wing forward and did well enough before he was subbed midway through the second half.

NUIM 0-10  UUJ 0-12

UUJ are through to the final of the centenary Sugerson Cup following a 0-12 to 0-10 defeat of NUI Maynooth at Belfield on Friday afternoon.

UUJ were handed a major boost when Laois star Paul Cahillane was passed fit to start despite going over on his ankle in the five-point win over UL on Thursday.

And it was Maynooth who made the better start and raced into a 0-5 to 0-3 lead.

The momentum of the game swung massively in UUJ's favour before the break, however, and they struck five successive points to lead by 0-8 to 0-5 at half-time.

Monaghan's Conor McManus and Tyrone's Matthew Donnelly were calling all the shots in the Jordanstown and they moved even further ahead, 0-11 to 0-6, in the final quarter.

Maynooth, however, battled back to within a point in the final minutes and could even have grabbed a goal had Tommy Johnson's goalbound shot not been well saved.

In the end, it was UUJ who held out for the win, with Red Hand star Donnelly hitting the insurance point - following a brilliant run down the wing - late in the game to give them a two-point win and a place in Saturday's

Yeah I appreciate the centenary thing and the return to the old format but surely there are better ways to celebrate the 100 years than slogging the life out of lads. 3 games in 3 days. Mad. I'll be interested to see what the final is like. I heard that UCC have 3 bad injuries, 2 of which are their captain and vice captain. Tough going.
Sigerson is a GAA treasure IMO.

A report in this morning's Independent newspaper reveals that the University of Jordanstown, could be kicked out of this year's competition because they've mislaid the trophy. The club failed to return the Sigerson Cup to the Comhairle Ard Oideachas by the deadline of December 24 and their opening match of the new campaign against Waterford IT has been cancelled while an investigation into the matter takes place. A hearing will be heard in Croke Park on Thursday night.

UUJ Gaelic Football club President John Farrell told the Independent that the trophy has not been seen since the day UUJ triumphed in the final. "The last time it was seen was in the Botanic night-club in Belfast, who are one of our sponsors, the night of our win in the final. It was being filled up and passed around the place, so I suppose there's a possibility that it could have been lifted up and carried out," he said.

Although the missing trophy is not actually the real Sigerson Cup - it was replaced by a new model for the 2001 season - it still remains a serious concern for the CAO. According to CAO chairman Des Cullinane, if the trophy goes missing, the winning club is responsible for its safety. They are also responsible for replacing the cup and are liable for a fine of over €600.

However, UUJ are more concerned about being kicked out of the competition than they are of having to cough up for a replacement trophy. "If we were thrown out of the Sigerson it would be a disaster for the club," Farrell told the Independent. "We're exceptionally sorry and we're going down to Dublin on Thursday with our hands held up. We'll offer to replace the cup and we won't complain if we're asked to pay a fine. On the other hand, if the CAO take the decision to kick us out of the competition, then we'll have no option but to appeal."

A GAELIC football trophy turned up yesterday 10 months after it mysteriously disappeared.

The coveted Sigerson Cup, competed for by third level institutions, was left on the doorstep of a student hall of residence in Palestine Street, Belfast, the first time it has been seen in ten months.

But had the person who gave it back waited for another 24 hours he or she could have collected a £1,000 reward put up by the Botanic Inn pub for its safe return.

The cup disappeared from the Botanic Inn nightclub on the day the University of Ulster, Jordanstown beat UCD in the final last April.

"I can confirm that the Sigerson Cup is now safe and sound in the University at the moment," said John Farrell, the president of the UUJ Gaelic Football Club.

UUJ are due to appear before the GAA's Higher Educational Council in Croke Park today.

Before yesterday's discovery, they faced the possibility of expulsion from this year's Sigerson Cup, but they may now escape with a nominal fine for not returning the cup by the December 24 deadline.

Usually a draw these games, and at 6/1 i may have a bit of that. Worryingly for me would be the injuries to the UCC players and Jordanstown are currently evens still a great price.

Yeah very serious. What other competition has a combination of county stars from different counties along with quality club players, playing in their prime around 21 years old? I just think its a complete sham that they are asked to play 3 days in a row. Completely de-values the whole thing

Brutal game of football for what seemed to be decent conditions and especially with Jtown having a 'star studded' attack.

Have to say UCC worked their asses off and were full value for the victory in my opinion and by far the better team!! Jordanstown looked like a bunch of lads at a trial match with all of them playing for themselves, indeed some of them should be ashamed for that performance it was awful.

I would also agree with someone about Mattie Donnelly . . . the lad has a long way to go to make it on the intercounty scene and if he produced a performance like that for Tyrone Mickey Harte wouldn't have let him see the 2nd half!!

Just finished watching the Sigerson Final on TG4. I thought the team that played the better football over 60 minutes won in the end. It was far from a dazzling display from either side though.

Does anyone know what team has won the most Sigerson's over the course of this competion?

One other thing, why did UCC choose to place the "Death's Head" insignia on their jerseys? As an American who had an uncle die in France fighting the SS Panzers during the Battle of the Bulge seeing that insignia is rather disturbing.

lads ye are all commenting on the final like its a normal game - this was these lads 3rd game in 3 days - how the f**k to ye expect lads to be fresh and able to show their full potential after 3 games in 3 days - you hear professionals all over the world saying they are playing 2 many games in short of periods of time without enough rest - and we have posters on here giving out about the standard of football - fair play to both teams - decent game under very hard circumstances - Sigerson is about unity of purpose and a team efort - not idividuals.

Mrs. redandblack4ever

I assume you found 'Pirates of the Caribbean' equally disturbing.

lads ye are all commenting on the final like its a normal game - this was these lads 3rd game in 3 days - how the f**k to ye expect lads to be fresh and able to show their full potential after 3 games in 3 days - you hear professionals all over the world saying they are playing 2 many games in short of periods of time without enough rest - and we have posters on here giving out about the standard of football - fair play to both teams - decent game under very hard circumstances - Sigerson is about unity of purpose and a team efort - not idividuals.

Spot on.

Thanks for the info, screenexile. I still haven't found out why they use this insignia. I'll keep looking for the reason for it.

I've never seen any of the Pirates of the Carribean movies. Besides the use of the "Death Head's" insignia in a series of movies about pirates long before the scourge of the SS was even thought of is not my point. I just want an answer to why UCC uses it.

Have to agree with family guy thought Donnelly very poor scored a great point but didnt do much else only telling everyone else what to do .UCC better team ethic UUJ seemed to all for themselves not for the team . Thought Mark Collins Sean Kiely Johnny Buckley and both mid fielders excellent for UCC.All UUJ best performances were in defence bar mc manus. They really could of done with Jamie Clarke.

Best player for UCC was the wing forward Spillane I thought.

Spillane was excellent as he was yesterday also .He covers a serious amount of ground to help out , To be honest UUJ were poor enough yesterday against Maynooth and were lucky enough too many big names . Wasnt sure but do UCC have any senior inter county players . Fair play to Billy Morgan

The general concencus on here seems to be that UCC were a real team who worked for one another, UUJ were a team of individuals with big reputations/names but not much else. UUJ would be well known for dangling carrots to get "big names" in, and today proved that that policy can only bring you so far. They looked like a bunch of strangers at times today.

Most of the UCC squad were from Kerry/Cork and not that many county players. Says it all really.

It is very much that minder. The capacity to mould a team is one of the great x factors of sport, never mind football. It's rare in sigerson football for anything other than a tight unit to win out

Are you serious?
Yeah very serious. What other competition has a combination of county stars from different counties along with quality club players, playing in their prime around 21 years old? I just think its a complete sham that they are asked to play 3 days in a row. Completely de-values the whole thing
Railway Cup??
"along with quality club players" !!
I know of players that have played Railway cup and couldn't get on their County team that season.  Johnny McIntosh From Antrim
LOL who the hell is Johnny McIntosh?! I assume you are refferring to hurling? Hardly the same as football!! Especially in Ulster!
Completely different to Football, it involves a Caman and a sliotar, centuries old and the fastest team field sport in the world
Oh Milltown, wise up will ya.  ::) We were talking about FOOTBALL and there not being any other competition like the Sigerson where you have county lads playing with good club players, all from different counties... then you bring in Railway cup HURLING into it as a comparison?! The Ulster railway cup team is harldy an example of anything positive given that hardly any of the province play the damn game, so it's essentially an Antrim team.

Yes absolutely. It's a terrific competition. It has been degraded in recent years as a handful of colleges have tried to pull in players to win it. (Sorry to go down this road again). I think it's a great competition as long as colleges leave lads alone to go to the colleges they want.

Headed out on Friday to see the semi-finals, very enjoyable football and some great prospects on view. Brophy for NUIM caught the eye in the first game but you always felt that UUJ were in control. Typical performance from a Billy Morgan team in the second, didn't recognise any names on the UCC team as opposed to the star studded UCD team but Billy had them playing as a team whereas UCD were playing as individuals. Half back line for UCC won it, they attacked in waves and UCD didn't want to know.

I thought Thomond College won one as well back when Spillane and co were in college? Or maybe they won an All ireland club instead.

I took Thursday and Friday off work and rolled back the years to watch the Sigerson weekend. I have rarely enjoyed anything as much in recent years. The football was brilliant except the final and the young talent on view was superb. UCC deserved to win over all.
I even found myself supporting the Poly, they played some very good football in the quarter final and semi final but Cork were just too powerful for them in the final. The Poly team looked a lot lighter than the other colleges there and they wouldn't have had the big names of some of the other colleges. But,anyway, I enjoyed it all and might just book off next year as well.
Great to see the Sigerson Master there Sean O'Neill, looking as hale and hearty as ever.

Great to see another bunch of Kerry lads again leading UCC to another National Title. It must gall Billy Morgan to hand any jersey to a Kerryman to help him out, but Billy is good craic behind it all and I'm sure they will celebrate the success well on Lee side and may even take a trip  to Killarney in the next few days. A Roscommon man helped them too in case you think I would discriminate against such minorities. Well Done all.

Great to see Cork people finally taking to a biteen of Education, it will do wonders for the place. Gone are the days when 13 Kerrymen were needed to power UCC to the Cork County title.

The Sigerson Council produced a magnificent programme for the competition. I wonder could somebody count the number of players from each county involved over the series. Obviously UCC had a lot of Cork and Kerry players but there appeared to a massive number of Laois, Dublin and Kildare players involved. Bound to be some boost for those counties going forward.

They don't seem to have a website though, so not easy to get team lists, etc.
I've tried to find teamsheets for the Trench Cup without success.
