could i take it you've just set up this discussion board umgola?
If its anything like the Q.S's and estimators i know the discussion will go along the lines of " we don't know lets ask the Engineers, they always get us out of the sh1t"

shit was the result of the engineers f**king up in the first place!
No Luder the "us" is the collective of QS's who will run like girls to the nearest engineer to get them out of the brown stuff!!!!!!!

I have been doing alot of delay analyst programming for dispute resolutions this past two years and in the majority of cases i have dealt with its been the engineers who have created the brown stuff in the first place, though i will point out that its mainly been Design engineers; who cant design
sure with the amount of time you boys have on your hands at the moment I expect this forum to be quite busy with chat ;)

Usually what they do design is designed on the time honoured principle of PPI ( Put Plenty In) " oh this slab needs 16 nr 32 mm bars to work, I'll tell you what lets fire in 232 just to be on the safe side" Pr1cks all
A new discussion board for myself - excellent news ;D

try working over here :D
Without us QS's the project would bankrupt the Client or Contractor ;).
Engineers have no regards for Cost, its just get the job done mentality, just get the Subbie in, dont bother with sub contracts, retention etc...
is there many qs's / estimators on the gaaboard
I'm one (well my title is Construction Cost Consultant over here) - work for a practice in Toronto
Im one as well for a contractor, i knew myself and Sligonian had something in common!!

Everyone knows that QS's are the biggest rouges in the construction industry...they can twist a BOQ and you wouldn't know it (except for me that is)...what about their old favourite...we've hit rock whilst excavating lets charge another £10K...lol
Hooks and crooks the lat of ya...lol

Q.S's have no regard to the actual costs required to do a job
I.E.
Engineer " i'm gonna need a 200 tonne crane for a week to get this precast lifted in"
QS " why a 200 tonne crane? my budget only allows for an 80 tonner for 3 days"
Eng "Because an 80 tonner would not be fit to lift the precast without dramatically collapsing"
QS " oh i did'nt think of that" :-\
Although the old site accountants are not the worst by any means i do have to say, they are alright for slagging and robbing nice pens from, they usually have nicer hi vis coats as well ;D
The true bane of my life is PLANNERS >:( >:( >:(
Do not start me on about these people and their black art of ASTA and Primeavera P3 " oh we have the logic we just need to adjust the durations" no you f**king do not need to touch the durations, the durations will end been 95% of what i have told you they will be.
In Summation Q.S.'s = all right for some things ( nice coats, making tea, getting a lend of the project directors credit card for a night on d piss) pain in the ring when they come asking the typical QS questions
Planners = dream world inhabiting, clause 14 wish list making nancy boys!!!
The thing about Civil Engineers is we do our own BOQ (sometimes) and we do our own loadings and structural calculation's, in fact we do a bit of everything but the difference is the QS can't do any Engineering

There is no black art to it, its just subcontractors dont have the brain power to look at the bigger picture and thats what a planner is up against, subbies who in weekly meetings promise that work can be achieved only to fail and blame it on everything else but themselves and there resources / staff.

I thought I'd join in as this topic is of interest to me. I've been reading this board for many years and only posted once before. I'm originally from Down and have lived out in the States for 34 years. I have my own company and do estimating and project managing on commercial construction projects. Projects generally range from $1,000,000 to $25,000,000 with a few larger and smaller ones thrown in. I provide a full menu of services from budgetting projects as far off as 3 years down the road from when sitework begins, to buying design and then construction services, to project managing the construction thru the warranty period, which is generally a year after the buildings are occupied. Some clients ask for the whole menu and others purchase bits and pieces. It sound like your projects are a lot more fragmented and broken up among a lot of people. Does anyone provide the kind of service I do? I'm only asking, I've no intention of coming back and competing with any of you. But as regards coming back, I do keep the third Sunday of September open each year just in case I have another Down final to go to as I've been to them all except 1960 (but I was at the semi-final that year)
Over in the UK projects ranging from £10- £25 million would normally be managed by one of the larger project managament / chartered qs consultancies. We have just taken on a £300,000 project in North London but its a tough market at the moment and hopefully will start to pick up new work in the new year.
which part of the states are you based in?

No contra charges its all mitigation and the subbie can deliver as per usual

"fire in the hole" at the start
and in between the yelping laughing - "jasus that's a mighty f**king blast"
The funny / ironic part of it is that it's part of their advertising.

Blasters would not be historically known for thier marketing/PR/Advertising :o
They would be judged on A) can they get the job done, B) have they a name for breaking and wrecking all before and behind them C) if B is the case are their insurances up to it
