My laptop has been running slowly lately so i have tried to run Spybot to see if there is anything needs terminated. About a quarter of the way through the scan it turns the laptop off. Any reason why it would do this?

It may be an indicator of something amiss hardware wise as the scan it performs is fairly intensive on hardware.

Some desktops will switch off after heavy activity like that. Try breaking up the scan into pieces

Minder, you could try using HiJackThis, send me the log file it generates and i can advise you from there how your system is...
