Ulster GAA Writers to pick jubilee team 1988-2012

To mark its 25th year, the Quinn Direct Ulster GAA Writers' Association has selected Ulster Jubilee football and hurling teams from all its award winners over the past 25 years. Some 150 footballers and close to 40 hurlers have collected the coveted Belleek vase since 1988, so the choosing of the final line-ups caused some lively debate amongst the writers.
The 150-plus footballers were 'shortlisted' down to 51 from whom the 'starting 15' will be picked. The jubilee team will join the Ulster GAA Writers and guests at the Jubilee Banquet at the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran on December 7. A number of tickets are still available for the night.

What a joke. For a county that has built their success on defence for Armagh to have only 2 defenders nominated and for one of them to be Aaron Kernan is laughable. Off the top of my head, Enda McNulty, Aidan O'Rourke, Andrew McCann, Colm Hanratty, Andy Mallon and Ciaran McKeever would be selected on an Armagh team of the period ahead of Aaron.

Its a very lazy looking, profile driven list.

Some bizarre selections and omissions in there, it seems like more of a populist selection than anything. The most glaring omission is that of Tony Scullion. Not only would he be in the team but he would probably be THEE best defender of the last 25 years. Four all stars ?? and can't even get nominated for this team, farce! Not worth taking seriously.

It would be interesting to see the list of people who have won the award. In fairness the award takes into account Club form as well during the winter months which is why Kernan would feature heavily. Would Andy McCann ever have won the UGWA award?

There will always be arguments about who is not nominated. from a Down perepective you have to wonder what more James McCartan would have to have done to get nominated. 2 All Stars, 2 All-Ireland's, 2 Ulster's, Actually also won a Hogan cup during this period. One of the outstanding forwards in Ireland of his generation. Also No Ross Carr, No DJ Kane?

But every county could list several players who clearly should be on the list. I think what is more interesting is the players on the list that shouldn't be there. I mean Paddy O'Rourke, seriously? Great servant and gave 100% but hardly a footballing great. A man who played much more with his heart than his skill. Down had at least half a dozen defenders better than him. Also Brian Burns, who had one good season, maybe two. Even then his one good season was not better than the best seasons of Eammon Burns or Barry Breen (or DJ, Ross...etc). As for other counties - Benny Tierney? Bernard Morris? Paul Devlin?

Like I said if you make a list you will always leave quality players off it, but how do you intentionally include players that are clearly not as good as several who have been left off?

Boys are you all stupid??it is the only people who the monthly awards who are there. Nothing about nominations, if ye played well in a month throughout the 25 years ye win the monthly prize. Thats were the list of names came about. Maybe someone played better than scullion in certain months.
