I would have come across these groups plenty in work (not in a personal capacity). Initially they made prosecutions more difficult by mishandling evidence. Then they got at it and built really strong cases.

Seem to have died off in recent years partially because Police have gotten better at it.

They are still at it but as you know the Pred needs to have evidence on his phone and admit guilt. The evidence they generally have is chat logs etc. The citizens arrest is used very loosely!

Yeah I know they are still about but 10-12 years ago I'd have quite a few cases where they had done all the evidence gather themselves. Initially very badly but that improved.

Now they seem to turn things over to or their operation gets over by the PSNI quite quickly.

The catch a predator show in US was crazy stuff. Ones I saw on youtube, perps were practically lining themselves up one after the other outside the house to get in. Chris Hansen no angel in real life though apparently. But brilliant in South Park.

That COPE lot are not as professional as they like to make out and have had quite a few screw ups including fall outs with the guards. Also some assaults off camera. They are all benefit scroungers who seek adoration.

They're perfect example of wrong method, right result. I find the groups and people hard to take and would question their motivation. But if they're producing the results and helps at least one extra child stay safe, then it's worth it.

If it's poor evidence gathering and the person gets off on some stupid reason, it doesn't really get the best result, yea they'll move out of where they are from, but on to somewhere else unfortunately..

Think these pedo stings are definitely a good thing if done correctly and lead to a conviction but as you say can end up done wrong and get a pedo off on a technicality or accuse someone innocent. Some of the ones you see doing it would strike me as the type that would need their own hard drive checking

Confronting drug dealers would lead to violence and most definite police crack down. Dublin in the 80s, concerned parent groups against the influx of heroin faced massive Gardai crackdown. Martin Cahill created the concerned criminals action committee as a two fingers to both the parent groups and Gardai. But long and short of it the vigilante group leaders were jailed and desisted and the general (despite his "degree of separation" from the drug) got to flood the town with brown.
