This isn't the 1950s.
The whole thing can't be allowed to turn lawless.

It should never have gotten this far. A club claimed to know but only queried it. That's when it should have been buried. If you know what's not right you say it. Then. Of course the club in question are wrong, a desperate act by a club in desperate perils. Others would want to be grateful they're not in that position

Yeaahhh, fair enough. I just think it's sad to see a hurling club go under in these circumstances. I can't see them fielding next year. They're not really hurling at a 'serious' level, anyway. We don't need to be losing hurling clubs. Slieve Bloom and Trumera are also on the 'endangered' list. Didn't the county board have some plan to help these three clubs? Of course there's huge demographic problems for a lot of rural clubs and I don't really know how the ones mentioned can be saved. However, I agree with Smallballbigballs - it should never have got this far. A quiet word in an ear early on surely would have been enough and face might have been saved, all 'round.

Was Mountrath querying at a county board meeting not the quiet word in the ear that was needed?
Surely Kyle at that stage had to say to themselves 'ok we've done wrong, we've gotten away with it but everyone knows what went on' and nip it in the bud.
No, it seems they continued to do it throughout the campaign.
Sad to see them in this spot but rules are rules.

Look you can't condone what they have done but you can feel a bit of sympathy for them, you'd have to wonder why those lads didn't just transfer over, it would have been an inter county transfer they had all year to do it

At the same time Kyle is working off a small area as is and even at that the 2 big senior clubs beside them have encroached into their area and have lads playing for them that should be Kyle lads, and that's before you get onto the likes of the Gilmartin transfer which was a disgrace to be honest that it went through

There are 21 hurling clubs in Laois currently, Kyle Trumera Slieve Bloom Ballypickas are likely going to struggle to keep going over the next decade, if Laois was serious about hurling they would be encouraging more clubs, they let Slieve Margy die within 3 years, that should of been a project they could of taken on and got up and running, should be doing the same over around Portarlington/St Pauls area
Should be doing the same in football around Ballacolla, Rathdowney Borris area,
Every player should have access to football and hurling in their region of the county, and there should be access to senior for every player
Having a North and South hurling team made of 5/6 junior and intermediate teams each, they increased it to 10 you might as well have it at 12 and give everyone an opportunity
Same with football they could have 4 regional teams in senior too, which John Sugrue wanted when he was in charge

Laois Rising

On paper it sounds great but the reality is that Laois is a duel county. Not enough weeks in the calendar to accommodate lads playing say junior hurling with club and senior hurling with the region. Say 5/6 of team also have football commitments and say one or two of those good enough to play for regional football team as well. Where do you fit those four fixtures in a window of say 10-14 days. The regions work in Kerry because they can run the hurling championship in the space of about 4/5 weeks in June and July because none of the county footballers play for hurling clubs. Therefore all hurling in the county is finished by late July. Come August, club football is the only show in town with the club championship played before the county championship. I can't imagine too many in Laois would be happy to see hurling in the county done and dusted by July in a 4/5 week period to accommodate regional teams in football.

I get your point, but I'd say try it for a year and see, the lads that want to play will play realistically, as it stand junior and intermediate matches are been played on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so fixing a senior game for a Sunday is doable, I'd imagine getting a schedule for trainings etc would nearly be the main issue, look it wouldn't be a runner for everyone, but at least it eliminates lads leaving so they can play senior hurling arguement
Realistically bar your going from Clonaslee to Graiguecullen or something like that there should only be transfers given in exceptional circumstances, Laois isn't that big a county geographically
Sorry about side tracking from the Kyle issue
Does anyone know if they have any youngsters coming through, and are they willing to play adult with them, I assume most play with Borris
and they have the same problem Slieve Bloom have in that they can't lads to come back once they hit the age, especially if they are good, Trumera are the ones who seem to be able to get them back, although given the amount of falling outs in that club the last few years you wonder how long that will continue

Remind me of the Gilmartin transfer?

There is an obvious solution to the Slieve Bloom & Trumera issue.
Whether they or the big brother parishioners like it or not.

Slieve Bloom were on the brink about 15 years ago.
One player (I am not saying they don't have other good players) has essentially provided the impetus for them to revive and keep going the last 10 years.
Things will be ok for another 4-5 years. But after that, I don't think it will be pretty.

Trumera have never had that one player.
Not at the same level.
I think they are a hardier club though.
They have another bit to go yet before they hit the depths of Kyle.

Kyle, I don't think there is a future unfortunately. Where they go.
I don't know.
It's amazing that this was raised earlier in the year and let continue.
The CB had a duty there too to step in and earn sternly.
It's the clubs own fault anyways, but if there was a warning too then they are beyond saving.

I think the Kyle situation is one of two things or maybe a mixture of the two.

1. They were on the cusp of folding and this was their only option.

2. They could field but wouldnt win anything and decided to get a bit greedy instead of merely fielding a team.

The county board must have a sense of what the balance of the above is.

If it was complete desperation to keep club from dying then we need to look at how they can legally get a few more players in order to field a team.

A club isn't just about county final day or senior hurling. It's the heartbeat of these rural communities that are being allowed die by our government.

Make no mistake but the cost of building, planning permission hoop jumping, decimation of rural services  and neglect of rural Ireland are all at play here.

We can laugh at the team photo and let them die or we can come up with suggestions to help save them.

Ah,surely it's option 2 above? They had a few subs togged out so they could have fielded a legal team but probably got the scent of a trophy and decided to take a chance.
Surely, they're better off dropping to junior C and fielding a legitimate team?

Smallballbigballs

As I say, take care lads, there but for the grace of a local school or town nearby, goes any of your clubs
