The size of hurling areas in counties

I was just wondering what the size of the hurling areas in different counties is because for example Laois with a population of 90,000 the hurling area is only a population of about 30,000 and you won't find a hurling club in the east of the county. Which in my opinion is one of the main reasons why Laois are where they are too good for the Joe Mcdonagh Cup but not good enough for the Leinster Championship

Is that a small part of Roscommon that's considered hurling area bordering Galway on the map on that link?

Thats what i was thinking not a chance Galway's hurling area is the same size as laois's when they have triple the population

So the hurling area in the Ards stretches all the way up to Millisle on the East coast of the peninsula and almost into Newtownards on the West coast of the peninsula.

Evidently Dr Kevin Whelan has never been to these places or he'd know Jamey Bryson and Co aren't big into the hurling.

It's probably a third of that area, mostly on the East coast and not going beyond Kircubbin on the east coast and Cloughy on the west coast.

Yes, there was an area around Four Roads and Athleague that was fairly strong. In the '80s Roscommon used to be, y'know - not a disgrace, shall we say. I remember them beating Wexford in the Centenary Cup competition before being beaten by Cork. So, in esteemed company. They competed in Connacht finals in the '90s, but I read somewhere that "the Joe Rabbitte incident" is basically what done for the game in the county. It's on youtube, but in one of these finals their full-back basically pulled on Rabbitte's head/ shoulder (can't remember which), and he got a nasty enough doing. Has to be said, however, that Rabbitte was no saint in that game, either, and while he wasn't asking for his head to be chopped off, he certainly was looking for a bit of a slap...

Looked it up, they were in the Christy Ring this year, and although they finished bottom, they won't be relegated because New York won the Rackard. So there you go.
