End of the leagues this weekend with finals taking place. Div one Harps v Camross Harps could probably do with a win more to get sliver ware at senior level but camross won't be easy beating. Div 2 Bkill should get over Rdowney second team. Div 3 Sbloom v Ctown local Derby Sbloom a grade higher should have enough to get through. Div 4 pickes v RRT could be tight.

Harps are very young - seven u20s starting in the semi-final. I think they'll win it, but be interesting to see how they cope w/ Camross. They do need a win, but once they get going, could be hard to stop 'em!

What's the story with Cha? Still, I agree, Ballinakill should have enough.

Div. 3 - not so sure. Castletown are young, and well able to score. I have a feeling they'll beat Slieve Bloom.

PRT V 'pickas will be tight. Conor Headen making serious waves for 'pickas at that level. They're not quite a one man band, but if he's stopped, hard to see them winning. Sort of fancy PRT.

Div. 5 - haven't a clue, Rosenallis v Harps. Anyone?

But I fancy Borris/ Kilcotton in Div. 6.

Div 5 that's Rosenallis junior A team so they should be strong they play that Ctown team in first round of Cship that's in div 3 final.

With all the talk at national level about increasing playing numbers in hurling and the standard of hurling in lower tier counties, I'm wondering is any work being done to promote it in the east of the county?
Have any clubs ever tried to get a nursery or underage team going in the last 20 years?
I heard of a number of kids from Kileen, Graiguecullen and Killeshin who play for Carlow Town, but due to GAA rules they won't be allowed to do that after u12.
Other options available are Ballypickas or Park which are 25/30 minutes drive away.
I would imagine that between the 2 Arles, Ballylinan, Barrowhouse, Graiguecullen and Killeshin that there would be enough to get a hurling underage team together. Add in a few extra from Joesphs & Crettyard who might opt in if not already with a hurling team.

Or is it just a case that these areas are mainly football and the help or appetite for hurling isnt there among the parents/coaches?

I would say the appetite is not there from the administrators of the football clubs, who would be afraid of their life hurling would get a foothold. Funnily enough, many of the clubs you mention have recently had junior hurling teams (Graigue, Arles, Ballylinan), and then there was the Slieve Margy attempt. There have also been attempts to establish hurling in Port., and while there is an underage setup, it's hard to see they'll ever get an adult team going.  Players from Portarlington are currently channelled towards Mountmellick.

There is an appetite from the kids and their parents around Killeshin, Graigue, Killeen who all go into Carlow Town on a Friday night to play hurling, at least between ages 5 and 11. Carlow Town (and the other underage hurling club in Carlow, Setanta) have good numbers of kids from County Laois. No club in Laois has made a push yet but it will happen again I reckon. It is probably up to a group of motivated parents to get it going. It is difficult for the kids that want to play both hurling and football, with a foot in each county. (Laois GAA Football/Carlow GAA Hurling putting their Go-Games on the same weeks/times doesn't help the young kids wanting to play both either).  Some will choose football only, some are playing away in both and keeping their heads down and only very few will choose hurling but there are a few lads playing hurling in Carlow only.

It is not allowed but it is happening. Not widespread but a good few lads playing hurling in Carlow and Football in Laois. Keeping their heads down.

Next thing they will be given a dispensation to continue based on Carlow Town being a weaker hurling area.


Surely Laois could spare a GPO to train teams at u13/15/17 twice a week and manage them in games with help from parents.
A combined team covering that side of the county.
