Monaghan win after looking down and out at HT. What happened the Rossies?

seafoid

Very disappointed for Ros. A late mushroom goal . Concentration has to be all match long. A good result against Kerry and bating Down plus the odd point here and there and ye could be okay.

Big win by all accounts. What a comeback though, go on the lads. Good to see lads step up near the end and get vital scores when the pressure was on.

Fair play Rossies. Ye had that game won, but for a last minute lapse of concentration for the goal. I'd say McStay will make sure that never happens again this campaign. It's a gutting way to lose a game, but more than holding your own against AI quarter finalists and recent Ulster champions, in your first Div 1 game in ages, ain't too shabby.

Very worried when Shine (started with no actual midfielder) was out as well as Murtagh who was more expected. But McStay/FOD did the opposite of Evans and started 15 healthy players. We were missing so many key men through injury but the ones who wore the jersey did it justice. Fintan Cregg, Kilroy, Cathal Cregg and Seanie were top class.

Wasn't a true comeback by Monaghan, we had a big wind in the first half, Monaghan in the second. Difference they only leaked the one goal playing against the wind.

Can't fault the effort by the lads. They were up for it and almost took everything Monaghan had and won it at the death. Pity for Darren that it was his mistake that cost us a draw or even a win. But there's enough positives in today's performance that we can move on and focus on Kerry next weekend. Nothing like D1 to refocus the minds.

Good luck to Monaghan, similar county to ours and it's always good to see someone crashing the big boys' party.

Meant to say big wind as opposed to big win, that certainly seemed to be the big factor in the game. Wasn't sure at HT if we'd make back the defecit going by repotts at the time.

The wind was a factor but Monaghan made their own very heavy weather in the 2nd half. Neither team deserved to win and probably the difference was that brilliant bit of skill by McManus to steal the clinching goal. I thought Ryan Wylie  deserved a yellow not a black. as his foul was just ordinary foul to concede the penalty, but generally  the ref did well. Drew Wylie was a stand-out I thought, a skillful defender doing his job well. The high pressing in the 2nd half on the Rosssie' kickouts were the real clincher, the Rossies struggled most every time to get the ball out. We are still plagued with ponderous approach, 2 or 3 passes too many, allowing the opposition to get everybody back and in place.

Maguire01

Poor enough performance by Monaghan and did just enough. Would have taken a draw at any stage before the second goal. Good showings from Kerr and McKenna.

In fairness it was Darren O's errant kickout rather than skill by McManus that was the cause of the goal. Gutting to kick the ball directly to the best forward the opposition have with a game level in injury time. Will just have to learn from these experiences.

As I wrote, the goal was a steal but McManus still had to score, he moved  into space with lightening speed and finished with aplomb.

Zulu

Brilliant finish from McManus, not many forwards would have hung that up.

Cunny Funt

Caught the tail end of this game on TG4 the rossies will rightly be kicking themselves that they didn't get at least a draw out of that game. Bad mistake on that winning goal not sure who is to blame the keeper or the defender that was napping. McManus was never going to miss a chance like that.

D. Murtagh fully fit and will start tomorrow. Big day for us Rossies, would be great to start with a win, Down very poor tonight and look sure to be relegated,so one more to go.
Come on the Rossies.
D Murtagh hardly fully fit when he couldn't play for his college side on Wednesday night.

As was said, that was more to do with giving him a chance to play Sunday than him being too injured to play at all. Diarmuid has suffered from lack of common sense by his coaches in past years, thankfully this year McStay, Dowd and maybe even Ciaran Kilkenny have shown some sense in how they use rather than abuse an important player. He hasn't (rightly) played for the U21s this season either.

College ball is fun but playing for your county will always be the real stuff.

D Murtagh didn't play today did he?

No one that was injured was played. Makes a change.

Shrewdness

Definitely 2 points thrown away by Ros today. A game that could and should have won.....But there is much to be positive about . Apparently, Monaghan started with 12 of the team that won last summer's Ulster Final.. Ros on the other hand, had to field without so many key players. Cathal Shine and Ultan Harney, whilst both coming on, have fitness issues. Absent players included Niall Carty, Conor Daly, Kevin Higgins, Donie Smith, Donie Shine and the biggest loss of all, Diarmuid Murtagh.....Don't want to sound defeatist, but it's very hard to see us staying up now. We needed those 2 points today to have any chance. Well done Monaghan as well.
