Following a review by the CCC, it has been confirmed that in accordance with the competition regulations, the game should have gone to a replay and not penalties.  The game will now be played again.

Exactly the same thing happened last year, I believe. No justification for it happening again.

Castlewellan played SFC v Saul on Friday night and their dual were playing less than 16 hours later in IHC. Some regard for player welfare there etc. Apparently hurling fixed for ages and county decided to fix football for Friday night after previous Monday nights game. Zero effort at accommodation.

Dual clubs and dual players don't seem to feature in their thinking.

And both Kilclief and I think Aghaderg/Ballyvarley are asked to play hurling championship on Saturday and then football championship on Monday. County doesn't care about dual players/clubs nor indeed the initial aim of the association to promote Gaelic games (plural)

What has happened to Aughlisnafin?

They lost by near 40 points to Aghaderg on Monday night. With the greatest of respect to Aghaderg, they're not usually putting 40 points on teams.
They also lost the rest of their championship games this year- East Belfast by about 30, St Paul's by about 20, and Dundrum by 6.

A look on the Down website shows that Aughlisnafin won their final championship game last year, beating Magherlin by about 25.

Even looking at their league results this year in Division 4, they seemed to be putting up better performances, beating Aghaderg and Magherlin, and putting in good performances against a lot of teams in Division 4.

Aughlisnafin reached 3 Junior Finals in a row, between 2019 and 2021, losing the first 2 by 2 points, and winning it in 2021.
They then stayed up in the Intermediate Championship for 2 years, before returning to the Junior Championship in 2024. That year, they reached the final and lost to Dromara by 2 points.

It seems like an immense fall in a very short space of time. I know they're surrounded by big clubs and probably don't have a huge catchment area, but they seemed to have found themselves going from a very strong Junior team to a team struggling in a very short space of time.

Most of their better players transferred to the town a few years ago. Croskerys/Garland/Flanagan - Then few of the older heads retired. Didn't have the players coming through to replace all those exits.

A good enough game that took a while to get going with a low scoring first half only ignited by the Bredagh goal.

Our lads made a fight of it which is all we can ask, and best of luck to Bredagh going into Ulster.

This will be the last time we'll compete at this level for maybe 4 or 5 years, we just have really poor numbers for the next while. We lose 6 of a panel of 17, two others probably will pack it in and only 4 coming off a weak U14 team.

We may need to sanction players out to other clubs to get them hurling.

We can probably field at U16 as we've a decent crop of U12's on their way but there's a whole pile of difference in physical development in a 13 yo playing against a 15 or 16 yo.

The joys of being a rural club where there's been no housing built in 20 years and English fúckers are moving in for retirement homes....

Any word on Jerome Johnston lads? Saw that he's got himself in incredible nick in comparison to where he was at last year. Is he playing this year? Also, Dylan Ward.. any chance the Magpie will ever come home? They'd have another one or two Ulster clubs if he never went. They're crying out for a player like him around the middle.

If they do they also need to beat the Antrim champions & them more than likely sneil, it's a fair big ask

Portaferry a good bet for Ulster Club?

It would be hard not to see Portaferry coming out of Down and that really pains me to type it, but it's theirs to lose.

Will they win Ulster?

They're trying to shore up their defence and have a new full back, with a bit of size, good in the air and quick enough over the ground. This allows them to move their best player in CT to wherever they believe they're under the most threat.

Maybe one more defender short, but overall they have been solid and the caveat there is that they haven't really been tested yet in Down.

Midfield up, they've good options with probably 8 to 10 lads able to do a job for them if needed and they can rotate them about.
I still think they're without someone able to win aerial ball up there when the pressure is on and their defence is under pressure and not able to get the low balls in that they need.

I'd give them a fair chance to beat whoever comes out of Antrim and they would have beaten the Johnnies if they'd have met last year.

To do two games in Ulster is tough, but not beyond them.
