Dublin football star Connolly admits breaking man's eye socket in pub attack

Dublin football star Diarmuid Connolly has admitted breaking a man's eye socket in an unprovoked attack in a pub.

The 25-year-old St Vincent's player was charged with assault causing harm to Anthony Kelly at McGowan's in Phibsboro last August.

Diarmuid Connolly attacked Mr Kelly less than two days after Dublin defeated Laois in the All Ireland Senior Football Championship quarter final.

Dublin District Court heard it was 3.40am in McGowan's pub when the footballer launched an unprovoked assault on Anthony Kelly, who had been socialising with a friend.

Connolly punched Mr Kelly in the face, knocking him over, and continued to punch him on the ground.

The St Vincent's player, who has an address at Collins Park, Beaumont fractured his victim's eye socket during the attack.

The 25-year-old, who has no previous convictions, is facing up to a year in prison when the case returns to court next month.

Disapointing as this is... could this be a non GAA discussion item? Recently the board has become a bit of a nest for gossippy auld weemin.  For those who are maybe more into this there could be a dedicated section.   There is a market for GAA people who will not want to discuss the rise and fall of their stars off the field.

rrhf I agree with you that the forum is turning into a bit of a gossip column of late, but this topic definitely deserves to be in the GAA section
Connolly is a fantastic footballer in my opinion. Dublin could lose him for up to a year, so it has everything to do with GAA discussion. He's be a big loss, however I suspect that unlike previous years the dubs may now have the strength in depth to cope with new talents like Jack McCaffrey & Ciaran Kilkenny coming through.
I suppose we will all be keeping an eye out for how the court action goes.

surely, these things start and then end up with certain contributors acting judge and jury, calling him a kn**ker etc and other comments aside.  Not really something Id like to be seeing on the top of the front page all day long but sure the market is there for it.  Ill get by.

Was that deliberate God14?!

Until someone is found guilty in a court of law maybe it's prudent not to comment. Either way it's not a GAA discussion matter.

I agree with Heffo.

Often you read "GAA star in drugs bust" or some such like and when you drill down you see that the 'star' in question plays corner forward for St. Gobnat's Junior A side.

Good job he is not from Tyrone or this thread would be 20 pages by now with people calling for a hanging!

+1.  There weren't too many calls for the Gerard Cavlan thread to be pulled down a few years ago.

I think you will see a consistency on matters like this on both sides of the arguement including on the GC thread.

Has he not pleaded guilty?

RTE have it in the "sport" section of their website! Not saying they're right, just saying.

And how is that relevant to this story?
The star in question is Diarmuid Connolly we already know that.
Plus he has pleaded guilty.
