How many of the old guard will jack it? Keane? Dunne? Duff? Given? Where is the backfill?
It could end up like Meath,  you know .

Keane said he is staying. Duff has hinted he is retiring.
Hard to know with Given and Dunne.
I think O'Shea should be told to leave.

O'Shea offered nothing all tournament. I expected a lot more from Richard Dunne over the three games, stuff like the Russian game etc.
Inaugural Football Championship Prediction Winner.

Not surprised you Nordies are watching Spain instead of Ireland.
You're only Irish when it suits ye.

Sure we Nordies know how to beat the big teams ;)
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Ea

McGeady should do the decent thing and retire.

I'd have Long and the Hunt all day long--players with a bit of passion who'll run at a team. Hunt was good against Italy about 4 yrs ago as was his brother Noel.

Seamus Coleman has to be worth a shout too.

O Shea offered little at right back defensively and nothin offensively.

Whelan was nowhere.

McGeady hid as usual--he'd one real chance when breaking but overran the ball--hate him, he's nothing

Keane should have been whipped off at half time or before. Farce he stayed on.

Shay had a poor tournament.

Doyle had the best chance in the first minute when Italy gave him the ball and should have ran at the goal and buried it Eddie Brennan style, not fannied about hoping someone would take the ball off him. Good lay off for Andrews who could have took it in further and drew the defender

Andrews may have been our best player. He gets about and is never afraid to have a go. At least he had a set of balls and tried.

Ireland were limited but were paralysed by fear, especially in the first 2 games.

Trap is infuriating.

Fans were great

Eddie Brennan style! Excellent analogy and so so true!

Would agree that 4-5-1 is the way to go.There is a temptation to throw the baby out with the bathwater after the past 3 games but 1st qualifier is only 3/4 months away. Given has made a few mistakes over the last 12 months but should be No1 if he doesn't retire.

Would like to see Shane Duffy given a chance with St Ledger at right back.Would play Walters at RM instead of Fahey.

Ireland are at the stage they were after getting outplayed by Holland in 1995 with a lot of the team near the end. It took a few years until we were competitive again and it may be the same story this time.

At the point tonight when Italy were leading 1-0 and Croatia were drawing 0-0, am i right in saying Italy and Spain were going through?

If so why?

Surely the 3 teams would have been on 5 points each, with all 3 games against each other finishing as draws (had it stayed that way) and then you go to goal difference and Croatia beat 3-1 with Italy only 1-0 up at that point surely they were heading out????

Nope, incorrect: Spain and Croatia would have needed to be level on at least 2-2 before Italy's progression was jeopardised.
Carlsberg don't do Gombeenocracies, but by jaysus if they did...

maldini

why though?

id have thought any sort of draw and a 1-0 win for Italy would have taken Croatia through, on goal difference as they beat Ireland 3-1

King Kenny is looking for a job  8)

Do you mean Paddy Kenny, one of the best goalies in the premier league last year, who is apparently no. 5 or 6 - or even 7 - behind Given, Westwood, (Sunderland no, 3) Forde (milwall sub), Randolph, Unc le Tom Cobley & all in the pecking order for the keeper's jersey ....
Journeymen in the Championship like Fahey get more mention on this board
