Hi all,

Appreciate there are other threads covering this issue but was hoping someone with specialist knowledge could help.

Have had problems with tendonitis in the knee's so long distance running can be troublesome.

I'm wondering if someone could provide a detailed program for increasing fitness level that doesn't include longer distance work.

I was thinking of doing this session twice a week along with a swimming session. Again any advice or routine to follow would be great.

look forward to any responses

Oakleafer, I dont know how to solve your problem. Are you training for general fitness or to play as part of a team?

Oak Leafer

My aim is to get back playing football with my club....my fitness level is very low at the moment so need to do some serious work over the coming 6 weeks

Do you mean running or what are your thoughts here? You could get pretty fit from purely cross training or cycling.

Have you tried indoor cycle classes (spin classes)?  Great for cardio and fat burning.

Oak Leafer

Yeah i mean running long distance...can swim but not great at it.

Tried the spinning too and think its good. Guess i just want someone to list a program for me to follow incorporating them all....

Started the gym (first time) in September. Basically i had a stone to lose and get my fitness levels up, not for playing but just as I'm 40 now I wanted to stop the spread.

I train 3 nights a week and do either a Saturday or Sunday. I do 5 k on the running machine, do core work then weights followed by 10 lengths in the pool and relax in the steam room. I'm bloody addicted now.

If you can't do the running then the rowing machine can do the fat burner for you, the other thing was changing my diet (typing this after eating a Pizza FFS :D) Wife cooks slimming world dinners, cut out bread (well 2 brown bread) eating far more fruit and cut out eating after my dinner.

Losing the weight will help with the fitness also.

Typical programme

1:Stretch
2:Running machine 5k or for you the rowing/cross trainer/bike
3:Core work, includes sit ups, pull ups, press ups.
4:Weights  3 types and 3 sets each.
5:Leg work on the machines
6:Some chest work on the machines
7:Swim then steam room.

This may seem a lot but works out about the same as a session with the club. Only more comfortable, better views ;) oh and cost a lot more :(

Your best bet is using classes. Spin classes will do you the world of good cardio wise. If you're about belfast there's a great circuits class in stranmillis college. If not I'm sure there are some in your gym which you could avail of.

Machines like cross trainers have programs on them too which you could avail of.

I'd say you'd be as well do plenty of strengthening exercises like squats etc if you're having knee bother too.

Have you considered a personal trainer to set out a program?

Contact your county goalkeeper, Mickey C, he will set you up with a good programme I'd say.  If you tweet he is @Adolfcoors

Seems like a lot but A good one is worth it. Just to show you how to use weights properly and plan a cardio that you may stick to. Its one half of the story because if you are not eating right you are wasting your time and money, a couple of visits to a nutritionist is a good idea too.
To lose 1 pound of fat they say you need to reduce by exercise or diet 3500 calories overa given time. Burn 2000 calories working out and reduce 1500 calories taken in over a week should in theory cause a 1 lb drop. Not an expert, just really interested because I see others my age falling apart physically  and don't want to go that way. Good luck with it.

Radda bout yeee

Would taking whey protein shake three times a day help - i.e. help recovery from training sessions and keep hunger away so you can stay away from carbs and fats. what do you 'experts' think?

mannix

Radda, are you weight training? Why all the protein?

Doing some weight training but not really looking to put on weight just tone what i have or even drop a few pounds. I thought taking protein would help - I haven't a clue if i'm honest - all info greatly appreciated.
