With the way football has been managed in the country over the years, is it any surprise that such a dreadful line was drawn under this and in such a cackhanded FAI way?

When you think about (I) ticketing at USA 94, (II) the Lansdowne Road Riot '95 (iii) the Eircom Park fiasco, (iv) the embarrassing Euro 2008 bid, (v) Saipan, (vi) the Vantage Club Debacle, (vii) the Oireachtas Committee trip 2019, and. (viii) the mess when appointing Heimar, this has just been a long litany of embarrassment. And that doesn't mention the litany of recent issues with the Women's National Team.

For a "football mad" country we (i) outsource the development of our best players to England, (ii) support English Clubs to the hilt (82k at Croker for a Leeds v Man United pre-season game), (iii) watched the demise of a number of League of Ireland Clubs, and after losing battles over Rice and Grealish to England, we are now losing players to the North.

In many ways the actions taken in response to the legitimate wishes of a majority of the Irish public are a hairs breath away from being as bad as saying nothing.

Most will wear poppies to honour the British Army, with honourable exception of James McClean who took a mountain of abuse for his troubles. There isn't a lot of sympathy for Ireland's stance in Western World apart from Spain. Even Dutch are back in Eurovision. Look at paddy cosgrave - soon as big tech threatened to pull sponsorship of his summit, there was no more criticism of Israel. Not a meg, not a word about the Israel match either. I suspect a good few of these lads know their football careers would also be finished, given the clout of big business - ie, we are not sponsoring your team till the Irishman is dropped. It was really the FAI who needed to make a stance. Their future should be empty Avivas.

It's a low point for the Irish team. We were never the best football team, but we were liked beyond our status imo.
