That's the point I was going to make.

I know most states have their own government of sorts but there's no history of being an independent state and are still reliant on the Federal Gov in Washington DC

How would it break up though!

Really can't see it as much as politics in the US is truly poisonous at the minute.

I''d have thought ideologically, you'd see, East Coast, Central & West Coast as 3 separate regions of significantly different political opinions (well, coasts are similar, but separated geographically so would be different "superstates").

I know its hard to envisage - but if you consider where things were when Dubya came in and where they are now - how long can things continue on this trajectory before something breaks?

What is wrong with America as a country? When did it become this mental between Rep & Dem / Libs & Cons??

When President Obama took over the Republicans went off the deep end which led to the emergence of the Tea Party. Most "moderate" Republicans then vered further right to avoid getting primaried.

Then when Trump got elected, the Democrats version of the Tea Party Emerged with AOC and Ilan Omar being the public face who just oppose everything and vilify anyone who isn't in complete agreement with them on everything

Big difference being that they are minor players on the Democratic side.

So AOC is a minor player on the Democratic side ?

At this point, yes.

I know the right likes to paint her as this massive, influential pinko commie who is taking over the Democratic party and about to ban the internal combustion engine and nationalize all business, but in the real world, what influence does she really have  where it matters?

You think Pelosi takes orders from her?

Is Joe Biden going to pick her for VP or put her in his cabinet if he wins?

She is a very articulate, smart, charismatic character for sure, but let's not overstate her standing. Especially in a party as fragmented as the Democrats.

Did you read that piece beyond the headline?

It's got an end of days feel about it, last days of the Roman Empire.

It really does.

(At least) one of two things seem inevitable at this point:

2. Break up of the USA

It cannot keep polarising as it has been without significant consequences.
Please Lord and the quicker the better
And the "UK" also while you're at it Lord.
Davy's given us a dream to cling to
We're going to bring home the SAM

Few points about AOC.

  • She's further to the left that established Democrats because of the way her campaign was funded, so she more closely reflects a popular shade of opinion.

  • She's extraordinarily intelligent. She's bilingual, which already puts her at an advantage. She graduated cum laude from Boston University College of Arts and Sciences with a BA, majoring in international relations and economics. She interned under Ted Kennedy dealing with foreign affairs and immigration.

  • She's politically intelligent. She knew how to oust a cocky corporate-funded incumbent Democrat and ran a far smarter campaign than he.

  • Conservatives are terrified of her. If you actually watch her debate anyone and listen to what she has to say, she will shred anyone in a debate because she knows her stuff so well. This is why conservatives have tried to push the narrative that she's stupid. Put her name into a Google image search and up comes a pile of memes containing stupid made-up quotes that she never said.

  • Conservatives are so scared of her that they attack her for being too well dressed (she borrowed a suit on her first day in congress), for having worked as a bartender to pay her bills, for dancing when she was in high school, and all manner of ridiculous and bogus nonsense. The fact that they have to scrape that close to the bottom of the barrel says it all.

That said, the Democrats are a long way off having a popular movement on the same scale as the Tea Party, but then they don't have an activist TV network like Fox News on their side.

Agree with most of that apart from the piece where you claim she would shred anyone in a debate

Some of her ideas, eg New Green Deal simply don't stand up to any degree of scrutiny

And let's admit it, if she wasn't hot she wouldn't have gotten where she is

Indeed. The modern Gestapo does not need reform or a few tweaks around the edge. It is legalized thuggery that attracts violent thugs like a jar of honey attracts wasps. It needs to be shut down and scrapped.

That's a great position for the Democrats to take for the general election
