One thing is for sure, Benitez will be gone by the start of next season.  I have never seen a manager of one of the top sides in the league keep their job having suffered as many defeats as Liverpool have.  Is 15 their highest number of losses in a season in years, wouyld be interesting to see the total number of losses they have had per season over the past 10 years.  Why did he spend £20 million n a crock and when fit not even play him?

We lost 19 games in the 2004 - 2005 season, but the champions league win kinda made up for that

That kinda says it all about that particular fluke.

You can maybe fluke winning a match but you can't fluke winning a tournament. Even a cup one. There are plenty of opportunities to get knocked out. All that shows is that the best team doesn't always win cup tournaments.

ok losing to wigan was a bad one but you guys do know Lille are a decent side (3pts behind lyon & only 4 points off the top of the table in france) & don't liverpool have a very bad record v french teams in recent seasons?

Are they better than Milan? I fear for Liverpool at Old Trafford next week, particularly as United owe them one at this stage.

to be fair They lost Nesta on the morning of the game and then lost Bonera at half-time and had to play Ambrosini at centre-back which was difficult for them. It was like when united played Fulham & lost 3-0

Milan are better than Wednesday result they did beat Madrid 3-2 away & are 2nd in the table in Italy only 4 points behind inter

The key to success is to be consistently competitive -- if you bang on the door often it will open

Whilst United owe them one and Benitez can't get a game out of them at present the players certainly can get a game out of themselves for derby games, just look at the Everton game.

On current form United should win by 3 or 4 but I expect Gerrard & Carragher won't have any problems motivating themselves and the team for this one despite their alleged distain for Benitez and where he's taken them.

City drew, Spurs won, Villa drew, but Liverpool are still relying on them all to slip up at least twice more, assuming they themselves don't drop any more points. Liverpool could also easily end up without even a UEFA cup spot at this stage. Is that the next revision to the season's aims - securing fifth?!! Because even that one is starting to slip away, particularly if (and it would be far from a shock at this point) Portsmouth manage to take something at Anfield tomorrow evening. According to some reports today (for what they're worth), Benitez has had his fill of it and is starting to look at potential options for next season. And given that money would have to be made available to attract anyone half decent to replace him, would the sale of Torres, or less likely, Gerrard, for ridiculous money not be in the best interests of the club, assuming it would be spent wisely on players and making a start at a stadium? Whatever about United's larger debt, at least they have their squad and their stadium.

Shrewdness

not to mention their wonderful manager ;D

Liverpool 'in investment talks with US group'

Liverpool have received a £118.5m investment bid from private equity firm Rhone Group, according to reports.

American co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are obliged to reduce the club's £237m debt with Royal Bank of Scotland by £100m by this summer.

The deal would make the New York-based group the largest shareholder with 40%, Hicks and Gillett each falling to 30%.

The Press Association report added that the bid, tabled on Saturday, has yet to be discussed at board level.

If a bid were to materialise it would be the first positive result of Anfield chief executive Christian Purslow's search for new investors ahead of the bank deadline.

Aside from slashing the club's debt in half, the group's funds would also improve the club's credit-worthiness, which in turn would make Liverpool more attractive for further outside investment.

Hicks and Gillett took control of Liverpool in February 2007, each taking a 50% stake.

However, their reign has proven unpopular with Reds fans, with the debt burden they have placed on the club and the delayed construction of the proposed new stadium at Stanley Park coming in for particular criticism.

Founded in 1996, the Rhone Group is owned and managed by financiers Robert Agostinelli and Steven Langman.

The company describes itself as "one of the world's leading mid-market private equity firms", and has its headquarters in New York with other offices in London and Paris.

Investment is great obviously but is this the answer?

Shifting the exsting problem slightly and replacing it with a similar propsal. The key word is Investment group. They would expect to make a sizeable return.

If Liverpool was a PLC this 40% stake would mean a forced buy out of Gillete and Hicks. However that is not the case and is merely a changing of seats in the heirarchy of  the boardroom. The same unlying problem still persists, however there would be now three large sharks looking for a return on their investment.

The financial difficulties will increase the liklihood of a firesale of its most prized assets.
