what info am I missing here?
what part of Ireland and especially northern Ireland is physically connected /attached to england/scotland or wales?

???
::)

No part of Ireland, north or south, is physically connected to Great Britain. Just like, e.g. the Isle of Wight. Of the Isle of Arran. Or Anglesey. Or Rathlin.

Or the Falkland Islands, though the people there regard themselves as British.

Gibraltar is another one. Mind you, like the Falklands, you don't want to go messing around with the Brits in either, otherwise you risk meeting a rather sudden end... ;)

Even if you are British & mess with Britain you are likely to meet a rather sudden end too, ask the ex-inhabitants of the Chagos Islands & Diego Garcia, maybe they where the wrong type of Brits the ones of African, Indian & Portugeese decent, not good white ones with Island of Britain Ancestry. I guess you missed the documentry all about it on British TV last night. Lovely set up The Brits say its the Americans you need to ask & the American say its the Brits you need to ask. The British Courts ruled the origionaly islanders where in the right & that Britain & the U.S. acted illegally but to avoid Parliment Tony Blair like all the British Primeminister before him who had to deal with it went for a little known meeting with the British Monarch, where she decreed (wheres your sacred Magna Carta now?) that they had the power to over-rule the British High Court & not have to present their case on front of either houses of the British Parliment. Thank God I live in a country where the Consitution is written down.

EG

As long as you recognise that I, and many others who happen to live in this part of the island, wish to be known as Irish, then I respect your right to call yourself British.

No problem with that whatever. Have you any advice as to what's to be done with the rest of the f**kers on this Board who withhold similar respect?

Sorry, I didn't immediately reply - I had some work to do for the British government.

I would start by not calling them 'f**kers', mind ! Though it's easy to abuse people anonymously in here - and that's not just directed at you, by the way.

I'm beginning to think that a way forward for Ireland is some form of assembly for each of the four provinces - mind that does mean the Unionists would have to welcome Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan (abú) well and truly back into the Ulster fold (might mean we'd have to review the 'two' Ulster flags for starters)......

You actually felt the need to point that out as if you havent said it a million times before?  :o

yer wasting yer time pal

people can call themselves cantonese or mandarin tangerines for all folks care
but if they hail from the island of Ireland ...well its an east conclusion - irrespective of how much folks wish they can change that!

Funnly enough in general the cantonese folks would never really see these folks as being 'cantonese'.

but dont go shattering their (de)illusions ;) :D

Ha ha, you're wild quick, Gwee.

PS I'm not in favour of basing any parliament in Athlone - no offence to Westmeath/Roscommon. But if councils in the north could (and should) go down to 7, they could just as quickly go down to 1 - and 1 for the 9 counties.

We can hardly let the parliament for the people at Stormont go to waste, now can we.

I believe that 15 councils is the correct number (imho) as 7 will just end up in a green/orange split between west and east of the Bann, with Belfast being the finely balanced one.

Yes, official Republican Sinn Fein as opposed to PSF (Partitionist Sinn  Fein) policy, isnt it?

Sorry, what is wrong with the idea of regionalisation across the island of Ireland. Is it not even worthy of a debate.

Works in Britain.

Wasn't the whole theme of EG's thread floating his thoughts that merging two disparate nations such as Portugal and Spain is as ridiculous/impractical as joining up the two jurisdictions on this island? Well, regionalisation would have to be an option for here to counter his argument.

PS 15 councils is, of course, the latest proposal for the north-east - and is a disgraceful waste of money, if you ask me.
