I think its training./   If you look at a soccor players legs the area above and to the sides of the kneecap are popping out of the skin with muscle bulk.  In Gaelic athletes they are strong but there is no exceptional areas on mucscle bulk around the kneecaps.

Difficult question to answer. jp donnelly has probably the greatest leg strength of anyone on the armagh panel.

Certainly strength and conditioning training has progressed very quickly over the past 15 years and an athlete is capable of greatly increasing his speed and power from his body's natural capacities. i think the extra torque which knee joints can be subjected to as a result may be the biggest reason for the increase in cruciate injuries. unfortunately you cannot increase the strength of your knee ligaments in the gym.

Bensars

Welcome back Rufus, your absence was noted. In reference to the above query, i responded to the article that claimed francie had ankle problems and not knee problems.

Furthermore please remove your head from your arse and stop look for personal credit on a " scoop ". This thread is about francie Bellew not yourself !!!

First post in a while from me and aptly located under the avitar of Manilou who is getting that second run out on Sunday week, and twice as aptly in Kerry.  I can see Mike from said county heading across with wads sticking out of the long gaberdeen coat to make up for his loss at Puncherstown.

As for Francie, well as one who is more interested in hurling than football it is players like Francie that re-ignite the passing interest I woud have.  I would consider him to one of the DJ Carey's of football, albeit not the only one.  The roar from the crowd when he beat the light bulb replacement man from Kerry to that first ball last year was an expression of how much he is liked as a charachter in the game, wheter he gives interviews or not.

As for the notches on his bedpost for opponents missing teeth I think we are being unfair and latching on to one or two incidents where players deliberately tried to head butt his hand. Such things come with (to use a Crossmaglen expression) 'the territory'.  At least they wer not off the ball like Paul Curran and when not expected like he did in Parnell Park against an Offaly player and who then got the job of going around the country promoting the game and its training aspects to school kids.

I never though I would see the day when I would be rooting for an Armagh player, but there you have it - get back on the field Francie, thats where we all want to see you.

Arses are still your thing I see!!!    ;)

A suggestion if I may - get someone with a basic grasp of english, and return to my first post on this thread again - get them to explain to you what I was getting at, and make sure the long words they use are broken down into single syllables!!

One last time before I go though.....

Am I right in thinking McGeeney did his cruciate but opted not to have an operation and instead built the exterior muscles up to compensate?

Bad news babies - I'm hearing from a very reliable source (of mine) some very bad news about Francis, i.e. cruciate ligament damage, ruling him out for the year!  This as a result of last week's match against Clans.  :'(

Anybody else hear anything? Huge blow if true!!  :'(

Now a thread started to day has announced that Francie indeed has cruciate trouble, and Bensars has written

As a tyrone man i have come to respect francie a lot. Wish him a speedy recovery ! ( well after sept anyway)

That will be a gaping hole in the armagh defence. La manga wont fill that hole !!

Out of curiosity, can anyone tell me does that make Bensars an arse?  ::)

Rufus

It was reported with quotes(25/04/07) from Big Joe that he had an ankle injury.

And?

And what?

sunny

I think mc Geeney tore his cruciate ligament sometime in the 90s (I think) and decided against the operation. Instead he spent time every day in the gym for six months building up the muscles around it by doing rehabilitation work. Its likely though he will require surgery when he retires on his knee. It takes some with Mc Geeneys dedication (or insanity) to do that me thinks  :)

QuoteJust heard on Radio Ulster that Francie will be out for eight months.

That'll give the thug enough time to go to Casement and gather up Mickey's teeth and return them. Tough..OK....Hard....maybe...Fair ....my arse......it's only a month since he tried to take the Gooch's head off along with that kn**ker Donaldson...take the rose tinted glasses off lads....the twins were AS tough and no dirt in them.

Boo-f*cking-hoo. Typicla Down man, crying about something that happened years ago... but guess living in the past is all you have these days.

Many a thug/tr**p has pulled on the Down jersey over the years, although they usually had a big yellow streak to go with their dirty actions.

Half fit you know rightly that the downie was just shit stirring, if Mickey Mouse Linden had been any sort of man that day he would have manned up and played on, thats what Francie would have done. :P
Armagh, the one true love of a mans life.

James Sherry and Barry Owens are aslo injured and may miss the Tyrone game!!!!!
It won't be the next manager but the one after that Meath will become competitive again - MO'D 2016

Francie will be a huge loss alright. Full-back is the hardest position to fill in football/hurling.
The cruciate is a common enough injury nowadays (accross all sports)
I tore mine just less than 2 years ago and have more or less retired from the GAA fields.
The cause of this injury is debatable.
For myself, my injury occured after less than 10 mins in a football match, and I blame it on having been at training the previous 3 nights in a row (soccer & football).
One of my brothers had the same injury, and a friend of mine had his done and so had his father and 2 of his brothers. There is definately a case to say that genitically some people are more prone than others to these injuries.

To avoid this injury, build up your Quad muscles. As simple as that..
It's true that there is too much emphasis on upper body strength in GAA and not enough work done on leg strength. In saying that there are plenty of rugby players who have this injury as well so building bulk on the quads doesn't guarantee safety from injury.
It's just bad luck in most cases I'm afraid.
