The best refs are the one's that aren't noticed and unfortunately Paudie has never been capable of remaining in the background even when he is doing linesman. He has improved a lot from when he started refereeing and has got an excessive amount of criticism for one mistake (albeit it influenced the result) but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he got the AI final this year. If he does get it then it will be worth it just to see Brolly's head exploding.

Brolly clearly dislikes the guy. His Sunday game comments were very personal and more than a wrong decision warranted.

If the penalty incident happened anywhere else on the field there wouldn't be a word about it.

Its hard to score a goal from a free inside your own 45 though....
You can forget about Sean Cavanagh as far as he's a man!

Jod did the exact same thing in Limerick, he took a bit of tumble against Kildare, it wouldn't be too outrageous to suggest he's no exactly shy in taking a dive?

How r they personal when he is factually correct. If he was making it up, sure I would agree, but he is not making it up

No Brolly was not factually correct he was offering an opinion on Paudie based on his own prejudice. I notice he didn't call the Kerry player out on Sunday for the cynical foul in the way he did with Sean Kavanagh, which shows that his personal views on people as with us all, colours his opinion.

He's a terrible ref though and one who shouldn't have big games. If him or that Duffy fella are reffing you aren't in for a good game.

I know they volunteer and all so don't like slatign them but if they're not good enough they shouldn't be there.

Well here's the rub, I happen to think he is a good Ref if a little fussy and most of his paper reviews this year have been good, penalty aside. All about opinions.

What's your definition of a volunteer?

absolutely personal to the man in the firing line.

So he states that Hughes has a habit of being prone to dramatic gestures like a month to a light is personal, feck me, I must have a thick skin.

So there you have it Paudie Hughes is the reason for Cork footballers ineptitude in the face of a replay and subsequent humiliation by Kildare, oh and he caused the black death, the famine WW2 and he started the troubles as well. It is disgusting that a county board should issue such a statement on a volunteer, who made 1 mistake over 70 minutes as opposed to the Cork footballers who hadn't the nouse to close out a game.

If I'm a player and  I make bad errors I can be dropped but I can be a ref- make as many as I like and get appointed a few weeks later?

Referees and players are volunteers alike. And referees have a responsibility to do their job properly. He could not have been certain that was  a penalty and the rule book for referees is very clear in that regard. If you're not sure you don't give it. There are too many Dad's Army characters as umpires as well. At county level they should be referees to ensure the guy in the middle gets all the help he possibly needs.

Players are entitled to a bit of respect as well with proper officiating. We had another dreadful refereeing performance last Sunday in the Dublin v Fermanagh game.
Players can have howlers and get another run out.

Esmarelda

Surely the point about Brolly's "analysis" on TSG was that his first point was about a game that had happened a fortnight earlier.

Kildare had just put on a great performance and Cork a poor one but instead of dealing with that primarily, he goes straight for Hughes. As Spillane has pointed out, (never thought I'd use him as a reference) the penalty was given with 20 minutes to go so it's not as black and white as Joe makes out.

If he'd referred to the penalty as a final additional point at the end then maybe he could've been taken seriously but then I should know better than to take Joe seriously ever.

Exactly, and Refs who make multiple blunders can be dropped off the national panel.

Umpires are probably the cause of a lot of this. a) Because they have very limited powers and b) Because they are not really vetted or trained.

Rossfan

Apart from the Kerry/Cork penalty decision - how many other howlers has Mr Hughes made?
Does he make up his own rules like some other Refs?
Apart from being "fussy" - what else does he do that people think makes him a "bad ref"?
