Would you say it was an act of honour and integrity for half the Laois football panel to piss of to America after the first rd of the Leinster Championship? Leaving the rest of their teammates and mananagement to face into the qualifiers without them.

It was only 4 and not all counties can hand out pretend jobs and have them paid for.

Ah right it was only 4. That makes it ok then. I'm sure Justin McNuty and the long suffering Laois supporters didn;t mind seen as it was only quarter of the team abandoning the county.

Pretend jobs me hole? Any chance of some detaiil on these pretend jobs or are they as fictitious as your 7 miliion nonsense

I think there's a lot of snobbery when it comes to speaking the Irish language - a lot of the time when someone who does not have perfect Irish speaks, they get shouted down by the language purists.

We should be encouraging as many people as possible to speak Irish, not complaining that they used the same phrase a few times

Nobody's stopping people speaking Irish. The point here is that Goggins is being paid to speak it, and he's not doing a professional job. It's got nothing to do with snobbery. His Irish is not at a level where he's worth paying.

On the broken Irish thing, if people are to learn Irish it helps if they can hear it spoken correctly or read it written correctly. If all they see is broken Irish, what hope have they of ever figuring the thing out?

They're as factual as the 7 million.

Probably the only true statement you have ever made on this board. Good man.

Was it that bad then? There's nothing wrong with using idioms in speech as such (see what I did there?), but if Coman Goggins was using it to cover up his scratchy Irish then fair enough.

Rossfan

Coman's Gaeilge is ok as such but he seems to have an awful small vocabulary.

Thankfully someone who see's my point of view, he's been speaking as a pundit so I think he's fair game to be shot down, as opposed to me slagging a beginner irish speaker making an effort. I'm not sure but I think he's a teacher, probably a primary teacher though where only a certain amount of irish seems to be needed. As I say, good luck to coggins, i'm sure he's a top guy.

Agree with you also, that a balance does need to be struck in language learning and use, despite often quoted ' Is fearr Gaeilge briste, ná Béarla clíste',  People do need to be corrected at times as what is the point of learning wrong words and structure. But like anything, the more mistakes we make, the more we learn. Not a bad thing, if done in the correct manner

Yeah. There is such a thing as being cruel to be kind. A line has to be drawn somewhere where you have to say to someone look, I know you think that's Irish but it's actually gibberish. Normally, a speaker can't be understood if he or she is speaking gibberish but one of the problems with Irish is the gibberish sounds a lot like English (or Ulster Scots, funnily enough), so the "wrongness" of it isn't as apparent. And then people get upset about being picked on and flashing back to school and all the rest of it.

One of my own chief memories of school is being always confused by Irish. I never knew what the rules were. There were exceptions everywhere, and the school texts were not written in standardised Irish - Ó Conaire wrote in Connacht Irish, Peig in Munster, and so on. But that's another day's work.

Rossfan, I take your point about Goggins' Irish being ok but it's only just about ok, really. There's no blás to it at all, and his constructions are very much more Béarlachas than Gaeilge. I don't think he's the man for the job, with the greatest respect to him.

Yes, Dublin got 7 million and their players are given pretend jobs. Glad you are finally facing reality.

You keep spouting your vile anti Dublin propoganda and we'll keep winning All Irelands. Maybe not 7 million of them but lots and lots. Meanwhile Laois will contue to wallow in its own mediocrity, blaming everyone else for their own inadequacies.

Dublin haven't won an All Ireland since 1995, they've bought 2 however and I agree there will be more on the way.
Laois may be useless but at least we're competing with honour and integrity.
how much did Laois pay Justin Mc Nulty ?

How much have the Dubs paid Anthony Daly?

It was only €6 million by 2011, but it is probably €7 million by now. Can you and your 'bud'  Michelle Schmeichel answer that without getting your collective knickers in a twist and accusing us non-believers  who don't believe in the 'Blue Book' or the 'Blue Wave' ,or whatever shite Andy Kettle et al  concocted a couple of years back ,  of "vile anti Dublin propaganda" ( Michelle's words, not yours, just in case you want to you use that as a deflection) .  Thanks 'bud'.

Dont Matter

I think you got me confused Dirk or you meant to quote someone else. In reality it's far more than 7 million by now but payement to managers and their backroom staff/drinking budies has not been included in this.
