St Ronans (Roscommon)
3 miles to Geevagh (Sligo)
5 miles to Allen Gaels, Drumshanbo (Leitrim)
5 miles to Leitrim Gaels, (Leitrim)
5 miles to St Michaels, Cootehall, (Roscommon)
Then Boyle is 10 miles way and St Marys Carrick on Shannon is 10 miles away.

Way too many clubs in a small lowly populated area. The meeting of 3 counties creates clubs.

Kileeshil and Emyvale meet in the Ulster JFC final this weekend, with just 10 miles separating both clubs.

Has there been a case of two teams from different counties meeting in a provincial/All-Ireland competition that were closer in proximity than these two clubs?

And what two teams would be the nearest to each other than could meet in such competitions?

From the top of my head, I thought of Ballinderry v Ardboe or Moortown, Moy v Collegeland, Aghaloo v Emyvale. But I'm sure there are closer clubs straddling county boundaries than that.

The clubs in the Intermediate match would be almost as close.
The Emyvale and Kileeshil pitches would be a 16 mile drive apart while Eskra and Truagh would be a 19 mile drive.

16 an 19 miles is still a bit apart.

Augher would border both Eskra & Truagh clubs

BallyhaiseMan

Shannon Gaels (Blacklion) and Belcoo must be no more than 1 mile apart.

I think 14 townlands in Augher, were originally part of Truagh parish.

When the roads along the border were all closed in the 70's these 14 townlands in Truagh became inaccessible from the south so they were transferred to Augher.

So the story goes around home anyway.......

That is taking main roads, pitch to pitch. A lot closer as the crow flies.

waterfordlad

Ardmore played Youghal in this years Munster intermediate hurling championship and I'd say they are less than 10 km apart across the Waterford Cork border.

Of the current squad there are 3 who transferred into the club from other clubs and didn't come up through the ranks. Of those 3, 2 have direct links to the club/area with parents having lived here/played for the club but moved away.
And did the whole families transfer back or do the rest of the clan still play away with their original club? ;)

My club Dundrum is hemmed in by no less than 7 clubs in Down. #landlocked

Chief Whip

Always thought the Portumna v Birr games a few years back were quite novel. Neighboring towns in different provinces who would otherwise not have had the chance to play eachother competitively only for the fact they were two of hurlings powerhouses at the time.

Who's the 7, I'd say we (liatroim) are the same (at a push) - killcoo, castlewellan, annaclone, ballela (hc), st johns, aughlisnafinn, dromara. Actually could fire in clonduff too, though probably alone in that regard around the country.

Bryansford, Castlewellan, Fin, St John's, Loughinisland, Downpatrick and Ballykinlar. All seven border our catchment boundaries.

Maybe I'm being stupid, but I thought this thread was about adjacent clubs across county borders!

i think thats true, but it would have happened earlier than the 70s i think.
The townlands you mention would form the bulk of alot the augher teams past and present, Eugene mckennas home house falling in one of them
