If yes. Let them have their day in the sun.

Only ever saw Simple Minds live in Croke Park and in fairness the place was packed. That said: they were supporting U2 along with REM, Squeeze, The Alarm and the lovely Leslie Dowdall and In Tua Nua.

I'd fire Christy de Burgh into the mix, surely everybody has or had a copy of Spark to a Flame!

(He was def at the Kings hall and was great!)

That was a long wait  until you seen  Knobhead Bono

Would stadium gigs have been as  commonplace in the ,70's and 80's as they  are today?  Maybe  the vast majority of bands  only played  venues like the kings hall

Ronnie

Weareros - that must have been some gig.  I'm guessing it was 1984/1985?

Simple Minds top 3:

Alive & Kicking
Don't you forget about me
& Belfast Child which was no.1 in the UK singles charts in my memory serves me.

As someone mentioned they never had a famous "best of / greatest hits' compilation that I can remember.

Wobbler makes a valid point about Croke Park.   I don't think Simple Minds could've sold out Croke Park on their own at their height.   Simply Red probably could've.

Ronnie - 1985 pre Joshua Tree and after Unforgettable Fire. Bono came out on Croke Park stage exclaiming: "The Jacks are Back." However memory playing tricks - Simple Minds was 1986 in Croker.

AustinPowers - Dalymount Park would have been the main stadium for rock concerts in 70s/early 80s famously hosting final Bob Marley concert before his death.

I recall their best of Album around 20 years ago that charted well.  Amount of records sold and how their music stands the test of time is a better way to judge any band or individual artist listed on here.

Yes this is a protest vote. Simple Minds don't have a best of let alone a top 3.

Tell me music isn't your thing, without telling me.

  • I Travel
  • Theme For Great Cities
  • New Gold Dream

I Travel - good choice!  The first couple of albums had some gems.

Was at the 86 concert in Croke Park.  It was packed out.  The pounding base of Waterfront opening the concert.  They had Lloyd Cole and In Tua Nua supporting them. Possibly Waterboys too but the memory might be playing tricks.  Bono on stage at the end.

That's just, like your opinion man.

Up until, and including New Gold Dream, they were - for me - the best band in the world, and their music from that period still stands the test of time. I thought from Sparkle In The Rain on, they then went down hill, which ironically coincided with their much greater commercial success.

Ah ha, the Waterboys! I  propose them for the list.

Christy Moore, Beautiful south, Take That   were   mentioned earlier too.

    Banks of the Bann

    New Gold Dream.
    Alive and Kicking.
    Let there be love.

    Fantastic band.

    Sanctify Yourself
    Alive and Kicking
    Someone Somewhere in Summertime (Live)

Great band. Good call to include them in this.
Keep your pecker hard and your powder dry and the world will turn.

    Ronnie

I've never seen them live although I think they're still touring.
