Can you still move it 13 meters though? As per old rule?

No, you could bring it forward 50m then back out to the arc if you fancied that if the defender interfered with the solo and go free awarded for interfering with the midfield mark.
Maybe one of the refs on here can confirm they usually know everything...
I'd actually forgotten the solo and go existed when initially posting on the change, still can't see the benefit or how it encourages the high fielding everyone apparently loves to see.

How can they keep changing rules from game to game this year, it's ridiculous.

Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

I assume the 13m advancement has been struck from the rule book.

Some people don't have the gumption to understand the law of unintended consequences.

What is the disadvantage to stoping a break following a mark now?

So for tonights games, impeding a player from the Mark is ok! as it will only result in a free from the same spot!

Expecting the catching from the mark to be reduced to a maul lol

Oisin O'Neill

I think Kieran McGeeney biggest issue with the new ruies is they constantly change. We played half the league and they changed them," O'Neill said, at the launch of the All-Ireland SFC knockout stage.

"They're talking about another change this week. There's four rounds of the championship left!

"I think Kieran has no issue with the rules. It's more just that they're continuously changing.

"As players, that's frustrating because you're working on one thing one week and then it might change."

After five rounds of the league, the FRC introduced a major tweak, with teams now obliged to keep four players in their own half at all times to prevent the roaming goalkeeper functioning as an extra man in attack.

"We probably had to tweak a few things that we've been working on and change certain things that we were trying to work on," O'Neill said. "Such as the mark, you know, you had to hold your hands up after going up and now you're being told you've five steps or whatever."

As to whether he agreed with the kickout mark, O'Neill said it was fine as long as referees allowed players to compete for the ball.

"I think if it's refereed in the spirit that the rules intended, you have to allow a little bit of leeway like for players to compete for the ball, but I think it's a reflection of how well coached you are.

"We were punished severely by it at the weekend, and it's something that we wouldn't be happy with."
Is the ref going to finally blow his whistle?... No, he's going to blow his nose

Yes, I agree with this.  So still risky to foul the mark because if the player takes the solo and go for the foul we are in pretty much the same position as if he is then tackled it gets brought up 50m.  I think it is a neat solution as it will stop the 50m advancements due to players contesting for the initial catch.  But if they cynically block the solo and go to stop the fast attack they will get penalised the 50m.

Sounds good.

After a midfield mark, it will be like the parting of the red sea to let the player advance.. Will be some amount of fouls bought

David McKeown

I'm not convinced. So a player can now win a mark be tackled/fouled to the ground immediately and get the foul. So where is the real benefit of the mark. The 50m advancement now only comes in if you foul twice immediately. I think we are going to see the impact of good quality high fielding lessened from this weekend.
