Yesterday wasn't the first time Britain GAA have been hosted at Westminster, very likely as before that its to continue the fight for recognition by Sport England and thus open up a wave of grant funding opportunities. If i remember correctly Softball England are Sport England recognised and for their 200 odd members nationally they draw down tens of thousands in funding, f**k knows what for but thats how it is.

The GAA have been blocked procedurally and politically for years from official recognition, in part due to the tin pot nature of Britain GAA and anti-Irish sentiment in places like Westminster. There are people who know full well that granting recognition to an organisation such as the GAA will result in millions being directed to projects across England and Wales. Britain GAA has got its house in order to a fair extent over the last 10 years, and can hopefully obtain recognition and start drawing down 6 and 7 figure sums sooner than later, the least they're entitled to.

Brian McEvoy was there, don't know the man and he might not be perfect but you can be sure he was there for the right reasons (solidarity with gaels based in Britain) regardless how it sticks in the craw - thats leadership.

There are parallels you could draw between that and Casement, the same but different in many ways.

Let's not forget the Civil Service are involved as well due to money coming from Stormont. I'd be more worried about them to be honest.

How are they planning to do that?

Quote from: ck on June 05, 2025, 09:16:13 AMThe GAA going to Westminster yesterday based on an invite from the Alliance party was an unusual situation to say the least. Either it was a big PR window dressing opportunity for Alliance and a complete waste of time or there has been a deal done and this was part of the process. I sincerely hope its the later.

This project is an absolute embarrassment for Stormont and its merry band of bigots who see it as their job to halt progress at every step. It's shameful and history will not be kind to them.

Looking to next week with hope but not a lot of confidence of the right decision being made.
What is the right decision?

I've no idea, just what I think. But if there's a way of hiding things and doing it illegally then the Brits are experts at it.

I know the loyalist knuckle draggers aren't the brightest but even they'll notice a big stadium. Not sure how the Brits spin it unless they're giving them even more money for something else at the same time.

Even if they don't notice it, Stephen Nolan and Sam McBride will make sure they hear about it.

May we assume that your "merry band of bigots" includes the SF and SDLP Ministers who held the Sports portfolio at Stormont for something like 11 out of the 14 years this fiasco has been going on?

Or is it only UUP or DUP Ministers who should be held to account for the GAA's many and varied screw-ups on this?

True, not the fault of the British Government for deciding to close Casement before all the ducks were lined up in a row i.e. diggers parked at the gates and ready to go.  Whoever were the geniuses who felt it made sense to close it were not the sharpest.

Britain is broke. They shrunk their economy with Brexit and now they have weapons to pay for as well as the NHS.  Casement wouldn't make the Top 1000 issues for the average Red Wall Labour MP. So there's absolutely no incentive for them to hand over a penny at the Spending Review, other than to make Hilary Benn go away for another while.  It really is at best crumbs off the table. Or it could be extraordinarily bad expectation management by the Ulster Council, which they are well capable of.
