It would never be that manager's fault anyway!!

Not his fault we don't have the same quality of player available as the top counties at this point in our journey. He also didn't blame anyone bar ourselves for our performance. Rochford for example is on record as saying we are no longer a top 4 side , it's just the way it is unfortunately.

As for Clifford , nobody would ever argue about his greatness as a footballer , what we can do though from a mayo perspective is point out that if we were to compare the fouls that are conceded every time the golden boy is hassled versus what Aido gets , it's literally a different rule book . It's scandalous and being happening years .
Walk-in down mchale rd , sun out, summers day , game day . That's all .

Aido does have to work hard for his frees I would agree he would got some treatment off the Dubs in those big games.  Always thought that with Ronan Clarke too work harder to get a free back in the day having two or three men hanging out the back of him.

twohands!!!

Dumb move by McStay in terms of picking his battles - coming out with the stuff about Clifford in a game where he was subject to a fair few absolutely blatant clearcut fouls isn't going to do anything to help his case as regards getting a soft decision or two. If he was looking to piss off Coldrick he probably couldn't have done more. Also I really doubt it's going to affect how Aido or any of the other Mayo forwards is reffed and it's definitely not going to affect how Aido was treated in past games in terms of getting frees. With his history in the media, he really should have known better (i.e that any comments on Clifford were likely to be the story) and used his time with the media after the final more wisely.

WhoDat

didn't see anything controversial in mcstay's comments. he has a right to call it how he sees it and the scandalised reaction from some sections of the media speaks to the "golden boy" narrative around clifford- nothing can be said about him unless it's gushing, sycophantic praise. listen, he's a great player, he's also cute enough and knows how to buy a free. more than once at the weekend, he was reacting before the foul had even been committed and then turning around gesturing with the ref and calling for punishments to be doled out. it's behaviour deliberately intended to pressure a referee into making favourable calls. nothing wrong with mcstay raising it in the media either. the dubs in their day weren't shy about using their stakeholders in the media to get into the heads of refs and you can be sure kerry be at it plenty too.

Thought McStay was spot on.

Wildweasel74

Clifford was been fouled most times for his frees. Yes O'Shea probably doesn't get the frees enough, but that's on the ref.

And that's the line mcstay was going with ie the officials not been what's good for the goose . (The golden goose in this case )  foley was inside Aidos shirt at one stage .

Look it's completely pointless going on about the lack of protection Aido gets compared to other county's go to men , we have been banging this drum for years , nobody passes a bit of notice , they are either blinded by sheer dislike for the man , why I dunno but you only have to read some of brollys vile personal attacks towards him to understand there are lots of people enjoying reading what he has to say .

McStay having worked in the media has used his time to play them here with pure deflection remarks. Since that match has finished most of the talk is about Clifford than his own team only scoring 12 times in these new rules on perfect day for football in Croke Park.

Yeah even as a Galway fan I would say I quite like O Shea. I guess for the commitment he's shown over a long period of time - similar to our own Paul Conroy. You have to respect that. And he seems to be a very decent fella off the pitch - comes across that way anyway.

Yes Clifford was fouled, there are plenty of players fouled in the game but his over reaction sticking his fingers in the air and moaning would really put you off the player.

Get up move on, allow the ref to do his job, they ain't stupid and Coldrick has done his fair share of big games and finals so he knows the score

For me if a player is looking a to get players carded he loses respect
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought.

Would generally agree with thy but when you're get pulled, tugged, nipped, studs racked most of a game it gets frustrating. He answered them the right way by sticking over 8 points.

AOS is unfortunate being from Mayo and the year in year out pressure of will they/wont they but he is a strong footballer who would add to every team in Ireland. With all of that though I've seen him flop like a fish a good few times over the years. McStay's deflecting, as said above,  to his own teams misfiring and inadequacies as that reflects on him.

Keyser soze

What McStay said was that Clifford when fouled is making the picture look good to the referee. Aidan O'Shea is the antithesis of that.

Can't say I much liked Clifford's antics on Sunday. Still more likeable than Paudie, though that's not a high bar lol.

LarryStiles

Clifford in pole position for POTY now.
