Quote from: imtommygunn on June 27, 2024, 03:27:15 PMI can't bring myself to listen to him. I read Joe Diver's article in the Irish News today and it talked about the kind of extreme personality of when you love someone you really love them and when you hate them you really hate them. That's how Brolly is with Harte. He was the same on TV and that's why he was put off it.

RTÉ put them all off to santise it... Spillane, O'Rourke and the controversial straight talking soccer guys. They'll have to dump McClean next.
Gaelic games analysis now is like watching paint dry.. Cavanagh and Cora and Fitzmaurice and them.

I would happily listen to Spillane/O Rourke  instead of Brolly anyday . Brolly  was  a narcissist who wanted to be centre of  attention, and did and said whatever  it took to be that. That's why he was  removed

But people complain that analysis is dire because  they use heat maps of players position,  how many miles a player runs etc ,  but then old school punditry was laughed and pundits called   dinosaurs.

What do people want?

Pundits that entertained and stirred emotion, the likes of Brolly, Spillane, O'Rourke, Dunphy, Giles.. certainly they could be outrageous but jeez! SKY sport heat maps and drawing lines. The banter between Oisin and the board's hero Harte BBCNI was good too...

imtommygunn

Spillane and O'Rourke were past it. Brolly personalised a lot of stuff and doesn't seem to grasp that you can't continually insult people. He wasn't too bad to listen to but I think the whole thing has sent him over the edge.

Not sure what is best. No Brolly and no Sean Cavanagh would be a good start though.

I think Oisin has about as much time for Harte as Brolly does lol. BBC definitely better than RTE these days.

I don't know are Spillane and O'Rourke past it! They're not that old and are publically very active. Spillane went on bout puke football and O'Rourke said 'a bad smell followed Tyrone football'.. people here were furious but at least it stirred emotion. Is now very wooden.
I enjoyed George Hook too though id say he is getting on a fair bit. Rugby analysis went the same way

imtommygunn

I don't think, and I think O'Rourke's stint in Meath would currently back this up, they understand modern football so are past it in that regard rather than age. There are bound to be some good pundits out there somewhere.

Spillane's puke football remark was born out of an arrogant realisation that here was a team from Ulster that wasn't prepared to bend over for the 'great' Kerry. Puke football? Three Sams in five years, one of the great teams of the modern era. Puke football! Aye, laser sharp analysis.

O'Rourke? The boy whose team plays the exact same style of football - only considerably worse - that he spent much of his time whingeing about on RTE? That O'Rourke? The boy who said there was a 'bad smell' around Tyrone football? Have you ever watched the 1996 AI semi final against Meath? And the man who said 'If a player as bad as Brian Dooher wins an AI, I'll eat my hat'. He won three, two as captain. That O'Rourke? Yeah, laser sharp analysis.

What do people want?

What ever about other people, I want to hear opinions. I want to hear that Spillane thinks a team is playing puke football, or that Brolly is done with Cavanagh as a man.
I want honest to goodness personal opinions on what the pundits see and think - not some watered down politically correct sound bites. Sound bites are boring.
Opinions might be controversial, and 9/10 times you might not agree with them, but as a viewer you certainly get another perspective you might not have thought about yourself - or one that aligns with what you do think.

Could I care less about heatmaps, or how many times someone ran into space? Maybe a bit. Only stats I'd really be interested in are things like own kickouts won/lost. Number of wides, number of turnovers. That doesnt need a statistician or an interactive screen.

RTE in particular is so non-offensive it is offensive. By that I mean I feel it treats us like idiots by replaying the cliches. Cavanagh will say anything for attention, Cora Staunton makes me want to throw a stone through the tv screen just to stop her voice, and eamon fitz isnt much better.
Then there's Cantwell who should not be let near a TV camera.

BBC is more natural, the personalities interact in an unscripted way and it feels like you get honest opinions.

I'd take Brolly, Spillane and O'Rourke back in the morning over anything in RTE today.

This is exactly the point I made in my other post.
Those boys had opinions that many didn't agree with, some were complete nonsense and some were right.
20ish years later the red-arses are still talking about Spillane's opinion.
In 20 years time who'll be talking about any of the punditry we have today? Can anyone remember anything that any of them said last weekend?

I don't mind if the pundit is wrong.
I think when Brolly was on TV he went out of his way to be controversial to start a debate - and he's just followed on from that ever since. I'd say 80% of what he says is him trying to stoke the fire. When he's serious and honest, the 20%, he's a smart guy with some opinions I'd very much agree with. His views on Isreal for example.

🤣 I didn't say I agreed with them. Spillane subsequently apologised for puke football comment which was born of Kerry begrudgery. At least it aroused emotions.
Thanks for the lecture about Meath football. I was at all those games. But he was honest bout how he felt annoying and all as it could be. Analysis now on RTÉ sport is mindnumbing. No-one remembers it by Monday.

Footballs changed from them boys day. I've time for both, but you're dead right about both, Spillane didn't like that Ulster teams dared stand up to Kerry.

That Brian Dooher comment is on par with Dunphy saying that Ronaldo fella is a cod. Dooher was unreal. O'Rourke is currently getting less than nothing out of a talented enough Meath team.

I agree.
6 county teams were meant to go to Croke park.  Get a lesson in football a pat on the back and return to anonymity.
And that Tyrone team were having none of that.

Tomas O'Se and Peter Canavan are the only two worth listening to on RTE

Quote from: Truthsayer on June 27, 2024, 01:25:22 PMI don't know anyone in Tyrone supporting Derry because of Brolly. Only place I even hear it said is on this board.
Just listened to latest podcast and Brolly very obviously wants Derry to win. Harte was barely mentioned except when Dion brought him up. Was a poor analysis. Was like its the only game on this weekend: and very much underestimating a Kerry team won the All Ireland two years ago and lost final last year due to a bad pass out of defence being intercepted.

Utter bullshit. The man's a narcissist, their MO is 'me, myself and Irene'... He's not producing endless content showing the world his  absolute hatred towards Harte and in the process telling all how our team is the laughing stock of football etc...the players have been cast in a spotlight they didn't want to be in week after week, collateral damage, but worth it to attack Harte. The same players who refused him entry into the Clones changing rooms in 2022. Derry lose and all the Free state content (again, the constant Derry content is bewildering on a non dedicated sports / GAA podcast) and the resident narcissist is proved right, that superceeds Derry winning. That's my last word on the man, he's not held in the high regard in Derry he thinks he is, he's made his bed and can lie in it.. A complete clown

I think I heard  that mentioned before.  Did that definitely happen? And if so , what  was the story there?
