Classic. I remember when we were being trendy in the 80's with OMD, Human League, etc....my brother was buying the Beach Boys Greatest Hits...we laughed at him then...we obviously knew fcuk all about music.

What era is that?
The era in which they released their music.

In that case I'd say yes, they did indeed write the best music of their own particular age.
A bold claim, i'd say. I don't know what age you are - maybe you grew up in the 50s and 60s and heard the music that wasn't remembered.
But i'd be pretty sure that a lot of what will be remembered from the 80s, 90s, 00s will be what was popular. And that definitely wasn't necessarily what was best.

Not the best song in the last ten years, but one of the best.

How many of these songs will be known in 30 years, in the way that people are familiar with works by Buddy Holly or the Beatles, although they were before they were born?
You're nothing on this board unless you post some lesser known music in an attempt to show you're not "a sheep". Same for the boys that don't watch films unless they have subtitles as that automatically makes it better  ::)

:) elements of truth there which I'm guilty of myself, but theres a joy in finding a musician (or a movie ) that the media haven't informed you about them.

Mainstream music is fizzy drink for the ears
It's a lot easier to sing karaoke than to sing opera

Didn't Nally suggest titling links so that we wouldn't have to endure such disappointment and horror?!

Teenage years were the 70's, yours? A lot of the popular music (eg Slade) from that decade was derided by so-called critics (not that I gave a fcuk about their bullshit opinions), but it's now being recognised for it's merits.

I'd agree that to claim Buddy Holly and the Beatles wrote the best music of their particular ages is a bold one, but it's my opinion, and in my experience that's the only one that matters in terms of individual's musical tastes.

Take a chance and listen to some early stuff (50's and 60's), I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

90s for me. A mix of metal/rock/indie/britpop.

Totally agree that musical taste is subjective. Just that if you didn't grow up in the 50s and 60s (the era of Buddy Holly and the Beatles), then you can't really know what is forgotten from those years... and therefore it's difficult to claim that they wrote the best music of that era.

ziggy90

Music was music in those days (I mean it was played and sang live) and as they say "the cream always rises to the top". Most of the bands back then wrote their own songs and if you were good enough you got noticed and signed up. There wouldn't be much forgotten from those decades. By this I mean "Popular Music" as opposed to more obscure stuff.
