GAA Discussion / Re: The Sunday Game

Just watched today's SG or is it MG and laughed at the end at Brolly and ORourke standing up for the teams that cant make it to the Super Eights each year.
Yes that's right, EVERY single team including NY and London all have an equal chance of making it to the last eight, where they THEN become The Super Eight. The top eight teams in the championship.
But No. Derry and Meath can't get that far in recent years because teams like Armagh, Tipperary, Clare, Galway, Monaghan, Donegal are ELITE and get more money or GAA support than they do.
Anyway. What was more funny was Lyster finally let Spillane speak who strangely I found myself agreeing with and at the end of his point he squeezed Brollys knee who looked at him as of to say F##k off ya Kerry c%%t whilst wearing his funeral shirt and tie.

Anyway, what I wanted to say was watching the end of the Sky coverage of Tyrone game. Not sure who commentator was but he said its the first time Tyrone have got to the semi final without the back door or words to that affect.
I've been drinking some lovely French wine whilst on holiday so thought I'd better listen again and yes that's what he said.

Yes TSG make some balls up but to come out with that line is unreal.

I noticed that too. Said theyve never won the all ireland through the front door. Was a boo boo on their part.

What's the difference in Tyrone and Derry? Or in mayo and Galway? Where's the inherent advantage that tyrone and mayo have over their neighbours? There is none. Instead they relied on good coaching, good promotion in schools and good crowd funding (eg. Club tyrone). I can understand low population counties such as leitrim etc not being able to compete for all Ireland's but there's no excuse for the likes of Cork, Galway, Derry, Meath etc.

i wonder if you were picking a combined tyrone dublin team how many tyrone players would get in. i reckon tyrone would get harte in instead of mccaffrey on this years form only. not one other defender cluxton a shoe in. fenton kilkenny  be in the middle. im going to squeeze mattie donnelly in up front at the expense of con o callaghan though i feel o callaghan will be a superstar. thats leaving connolly mccauley flynn brogan and davy byrne as my first 5 subs. 2 0ut of 20. any one want to argue for more?

Harte, Donnelly, McNamee, McCann, Sudden, Colm Cavanagh and Morgan would all get in for me.

Colm cav is a contender for footballer of the year. He would walk into the Dublin team.

way too early for tickets i think

That's what i would have thought. Didnt think general sale would have been for another week at least

There's a Dublin page claiming tickets are on general sale tomorrow on the website and in Centra and Supervalu. Can't see this anywhere else and no mention on the tickets website itself.
Anyone know anything?

Aiden O'Shea MOM baffles me. Thought he was useless.

Would have given it to Higgins myself but in no way was Aidan average. He set the tone at the start of the game.

He had a good game certainly but he'll get away with that against Roscommon. Carrying the ball into the tackle like that so often won't cut it against Kerry, Dublin or Tyrone.

He seems to actively seek out defenders to break through like a bull. Works against your weaker counties but god help him if he tries it against tyrone.

Dublin got to 6 finals in a row in the 70s, winning 3 of them. This team will pass. It's like Kerry in the 00s. They were on the brink of 3 in a row and nobody blinked.

It'll all be grand.

Dubs will win easy.  Who will the Tyrone fans fight on the way home?

These people were not "fans".  Fans of the rip yes, but you wouldn't see them near a game before July.
How do you know they're not fans?

I've seen fights in the crowd at O'Byrne Cup games, National League games and club games.

And plenty worse on the pitch.

Because I know many of the ones who partook in it and they don't be at league games or early championship for that matter.
Were you there?

No I stayed over. But I saw them on Snapchat stories singing songs that have nothing to do with the game.
What are you? The song police?

When its my name as a GAA fan being dragged through the mud by the media (particularly Unionist) then yes, I have a right to be annoyed. Jamie Bryson is having a field day with this.

Tyrone, Mayo, Dublin and Kerry to play one another home and away every year for the next decade to decide Sam.  Winner takes all.  All other county teams to take up hurling and/or camogie.

Hilarious how Tyrone having one good year and Donegal having one bad year means we are going to be the dominant force for the next decade.

There is no Top 4, Top 3 or Top 2.

There is a Top 1 (Dublin) and 3 teams at the minute who can conceivably put it up to them - Kerry, Mayo and Tyrone.

Kerry have had three cracks at Dublin now under Gavin, 2013, 2015 and 2016 - all ending in defeats.

Mayo have had three cracks at Dublin under Gavin, two ending in Dublin wins after replays and another defeat in 2013.

Tyrone have yet to meet Dublin but they are definitely the most similar in tactical composition to the only side to topple Dublin under Gavin in Championship football. This Tyrone side only really joined the top table in 2015 so this is a big game for them and I'm confident they have what it takes.

Mayo and Kerry will be an interesting game, it's a game Mayo really should have won two three years ago. If Mayo bring a sustained level of drive and energy that they brought today against Kerry next week they have every chance.
Tyrone were relegated to Division 2 in 2015. Champions of Ulster doesn't necessarily mean anything. cf Monaghan

Cork finished top of the league in the same year. Its yesterdays news.

There are 16 teams of acceptable standard in the hurling. There are too in  football but nobody wants to admit it.
In hurling the barrier is skill. In football it seems to be S&C
I think football is in crisis.

16 hurling teams of acceptable standard but only 2 in football, is that a joke?

Football is a far more skilful game than it's given credit for and scoring is much more difficult. However, it's difficulty to make an argument for football being a good spectacle the way it's being played. I think hurling is a poor spectacle than it used to be too but football is gone way back I'm afraid.
On the contrary.

Gaelic football at its best as played in this decade has been a spectacular spectacle.

Dublin v Kerry 2013 and 2016, Dublin v Donegal 2014, Dublin v Mayo 2012, 2015 and 2016, Kerry v Mayo 2014 (2), all have been incredible spectacles.

Simply put, some counties take the game more seriously than others.

We all know which counties take it more seriously.

We've had more real good games at the late stages of the championship in this decade when compared to last decade. Last decade had 2 top quality teams, this decade has had 4, arguably 5 if you count tyrone and the decade isnt over yet.

We should just change it to the Super 4. Top 2 play in final

Super 8 is going to be a complete balls up given the gap between the top 4 and the rest

One of the "Super 4" didn't make the semis last year

The middle channel in rossie defence are parting like the red sea every time.
