He is still an exceptional manager, Bryansford are real contenders now and in the league final after coming up from division 2, he did the same thing if not better by winning the league managing An Riocht after taking them from 2, as well as all his success with minor, U21, senior, college.  I don't necessarily think he should have got the job but a courtesy call from someone to say he didn't get the job was the least he should have got.  Maybe it was a misunderstanding I don't know.  If it was then someone from the county board should say.

I think I remember from watching Laochra Gael on Babs Keating where they asked him about switching the ball for a penalty and he did a bit of squirming, he didn't confirm or deny it.

You can't but plenty of teams try it when a penalty is awarded.  The team taking it will want a hard ball and the team defending will want a soft one.

Did Babs Keating not do something similar with Tipperary way back?  He came running out with the towel to dry the ball before the penalty was taken and allegedly had another dry ball tucked inside the towel?

In the event of any of the Play-off games for promotion or relegation ending in a draw, extra time of ten minutes each way will be played.

Just checked this quote from umpire outlining the rules and it does appear that a right royal balls up has occurred. Not that at particularly causes us bother, (apart from the usual interminable time the playoffs take)  but I would be somewhat annoyed if I was from Saval or Liatroim.

But it is a round robin format, not knock out like the championship so a draw is a valid result.  It is 1 point each for both teams in the mini league.

Except that it's not a valid result because the rules stated that there should have been extra time played. Hence the same fixtures going ahead again this week. Complete balls up. I wonder was there anyone from either of the 4 clubs involved knew it should have been extra time?

Interesting.  I don't see the need to do this when it is a league format but there you go.

Hurling Discussion / Re: Donal Og's Book

Don't be so niave kevmy.

The media and publishing industry is a business. Telling stories to them is a business. The more interesting the story the more potential to be of interest to the media because they can make money from relaying them. Donal Og and his agent know that the "oh did I ever tell you I'm gay" story will have legs as they say and they will be able to make money from it because the media industry craves shite like this. Get ready for TV appearances and glossy mag articles on top of the book and serialisations in the mail as he tells "his story" to the dumb masses

Of course it's not "just" the only reason I'm sure but the timing of it makes it obvious that he's making hay with his revelations.

He's no dozer

Of course he is writing the book to make money, most people would write a book if they thought enough people would buy it to make it worthwhile.  Having a few personal stories, or a different line on a few fallouts in the camp makes it more interesting.  I have a read a few autobiographies where a player goes on about 1 match after another the whole book without mentioning how they got on with the manager or there team mates and it is boring as f&*k.  Kenny Dalglish autobiography was the worst, we won 1-0 in Anfield, then played 1 up front in the away leg in Moscow where we scrapped a 0-0 draw after they hit the post in the last minute, that got us through to the last 32 ...

And Davis missed a penalty as well :D

It must be terrible for Watty Smith all the same. 15 years ago he could have sent out a team at Ibrox with names like Laudrup, Gascoigne etc that would have been a match for most in Europe. He must squirm when he has to write names like Lafferty, Davis, Mc Culloch on his team sheets now

They are still SPL champions and top of the SPL, doesn't say much for Celtic.

As my dad says 'the world is ill divid'.  The banks can hedge/gear/speculate ..  if it goes right, make massive fortunes with massive bonuses and if it all goes tits up the ordinary people will bail them out.  Not sure many other politicians would do much different.  In some ways that is what Capitalism is all about, being ruthless, keeping up with all the others who are doing the same thing or get left behind, making as much as possible as quick as possible.

My mother and father in law took all there savings (about 15000 euro) and transfered it into sterling about a year ago as they thought the euro was getting very expensive.  I know it is not funny for them but I had to fight the urge to LOL when they told me that.

Think they where just trying to raise there profile.

Gnevin , I fully respect your wishes to be laid to rest wherever you as a non- believer see fit.I'm interested to know what would be your idea of a fitting service/ceremony before said laying to rest.

The Catholic mass service is actually quite nice  at the part when people get up and speak . If I was to go tomorrow. I'd like coffin in the centre ,some sort of "chairman" not the right word but someone to replace the priest duties of being calm and composed  and who would call up people who wished to speak .

I think POG would like to speak a few words.

I was actually very annoyed about all of this as it went on yesterday.  Imagine the child had been in the balloon? As far as everyone knew - he was and that is definitely newsworthy.  I thought a lot about my own wee son and if it was him  - I'm sure there were thousands across the country thinking the same.
It's a good thing that he wasn't in the balloon and I'm glad he is safe.

I'm with you Iceman, I thought the same.

Been watching it all on FOX News. The newcasters have been pure comedy gold. Asking over and over again "Have they looked under the bed yet?"

Some of the quotes on the news readers joking and it being comedy gold before they had found him where a bit in bad taste.  I was reading it at the time thinking the child is still missing.  Now that they have found him and it looks like it was a setup the parents need a good kick up the ass.

GAA Discussion / Re: Sean Cavanagh

Fairly sanitised though I think Sean gets his point across in a rather non-confrontational fashion, a bit like how Mickey tried to.

The major talking point seems to be that Sean headed for a nap on the morning of the game and had left it with Mickey that they'd decide how he was after that, as he hadn't slept all night with the start of what turned out to be 'flu later in the week. When Sean woke he says he felt much better and was raring to go but was told by Tommy McGuigan before he'd even spoken to Mickey that he had taken Sean's place!

Sean stops short of any criticism which is commendable.

No talk of personal pressures and says his ankle was the best it had been all season.

So all-in-all it seems like Mickey has surmised what was wrong with Sean and put it in his book. Whether a manager has the right to do that is up to the individual reading it.

How did Sean Cavanagh choke?  he didn't start the match.  When he came on he played well, he didn't miss a 14 yard free or anything so he hardly choked.  He told Mickey he didn't sleep that well the night before and that after he went for a nap he felt fine.  I'd bet there is 3 or 4 players in every team when sleeping in a strange bed and when thinking of such a big match will not have a great nights sleep.  Though Mickey is one of the best managers ever (possibly the best) I think he made an error not waiting to ask Sean how he was before naming the team.  Next time Mickey asks 1 of his players did they sleep well I bet they will all say they slept like a log. ;D

St pauls take a look at the end of point d regarding draws in playoff games.

I saw that!! so unless each of the 3 teams win 1 game each, the playoffs should be decided by the end of the 3 games. (hopefully)

Last year Tecconaught and Bosco both beat St Michaels then drew with each other.  Tecconaught stayed up as they had a better points difference as they had beat St Michaels by more.  If the same thing followed this year even if the 3 teams all win 1 match 1 team will probably have a better scoring difference than the other 2 and stay up (providing the same rules apply).

oh dear, we could be in trouble then!!

Teconnaught  21 7 12 2 215 227 -12 16
St Pauls  21 5 14 2 222 318 -96 12
Drumaness  21 4 16 1 237 301 -64 9

Only in the playoffs.

So if Drumaness beat St Pauls 10 9
Teconaught beat Drumaness 10 5
St Pauls beat Teconaught     10 1

The table would be

                    Points   Goal Diff
St Pauls           2           +8
Drumaness       2          -4
Tecconaught   2          -4

and St Paul's would stay up.

There would only need to be additional playoff games if somehow 2 or more teams ended with the same points and goal difference.  e.g.  Every match was won 10-9.
